Abstract

Purpose

There is significant evidence of increasing global implementation failures in enterprise resource planning (ERP) projects; and, for this reason, critical success factors (CSF) on implementation success (IS) are of notable concern to manufacturing organizations. This paper aims to focus on these factors and the role they played toward implementation success of ERP projects in India. Furthermore, this paper will also seek to explore whether the implementation success is moderated (i.e. influenced) by the organizational culture. This will help other manufacturing organizations take appropriate decisions about the ERP implementation.

Design/methodology/approach

In the proposed model, the authors propose organizational culture as the moderator toward the implementation success of ERP projects in India. A survey methodology is used for the study, and a structured questionnaire was developed to get the information.

Findings

Through this study, it has been found that the organizational culture acts as a moderator and moderates the relationship between CSF and implementation success of the ERP projects in India.

Research limitations/implications

This study offers both academicians and practitioners a model to research, assess, and identify the appropriate CSF such as Setting up ERP business goals and objectives (SEB), Cross-Functional Teams (CFT), Business Process Reengineering (BPR), Projects Tracking (PTG), and Data Analysis and Conversion (DAG) on IS of ERP projects in India and moderated by the organizational culture. The research is targeted on manufacturing organizations in India, and hence it has limitations in terms of scope. However, the results are quite encouraging with very good response (n=223) from the manufacturing organizations. Other manufacturing organizations planning to implement ERP soon will be highly benefited from the results of this study.

Originality/value

Unfortunately, few research studies define the issues related to the moderator namely the organizational culture. This paper demonstrates how this moderator played an important role in ERP implementation. The findings will encourage Indian manufacturing organizations to implement ERP when facing challenges of the competitive market for their competitive advantage. For India, this research could be among the first to its nature.

Abstract

Purpose

Composite materials are replacing the traditional materials because of their remarkable properties and the addition of nanoparticles making a new trend in material world. The nano addition effect on tribological properties is essential to be used in automotive and industrial applications. The current work investigates the sliding wear behavior of an aluminum alloy (AA) 6061-based hybrid metal matrix composites (HMMCs) reinforced with SiC and B4C ceramic nanoparticles.

Design/methodology/approach

The hybrid composites are fabricated using stir casting process. Two different compositions were fabricated by varying the weight percentage of the ceramic reinforcements. An attempt has been made to study the wear and friction behavior of the composites using pin-on-disc tribometer to consider the effects of sliding speed, sliding distance and the normal load applied.

Findings

The tribological tests are carried out and the performances were compared. Increase in sliding speed to 500 rpm resulted in the rise of temperature of the contacting tribo-surface which intensified the wear rate at 30N load for the HMMC. The presence of the ceramic particles further reduced the contact region of the mating surface thus reducing the coefficient of friction at higher sliding speeds. Oxidation, adhesion, and abrasion were identified to be the main wear mechanisms which were further confirmed using energy dispersive spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) of the worn out samples.

Practical implications

The enhancement of wear properties is achieved because of the addition of the SiC and B4C ceramic nanoparticles, in which these composites can be applied to automobile, aerospace and industrial products where the mating parts with less weight is required.

Originality/value

The influence of nanoparticles on the tribological performance is studied in detail comprising of two different ceramic particles which is almost new research. The sliding effect of hybrid composites with nano materials paves the way for using these materials in engineering and domestic applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a less weight high wear resistant material to fabricate brake components especially in automotive sector.

Design/methodology/approach

Effort was initiated to design and develop aluminium metal matrix composite by combining aluminium alloy AA6061 and zirconium oxide (ZrO2) with the help of stir casting coupled with squeeze casting unit. Morphology analysis of advanced composite has been carried out by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hardness of composites having different compositions was tested using Vickers micro hardness tester. The tribological property of the developed three specimens having different composition has been tested using pin-on-disc wear test equipment under dry sliding conditions. To obtain better understanding of wear mechanism, SEM image of worn-out surface was captured and analysed. SEM images and the corresponding Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) on the wear surface were carried out.

Findings

The optical and SEM images evidenced the existence of ZrO2 particles along the metal matrix composite. Porosity values shows that the porosity level is acceptable as it falls below 7 per cent. Also, the finding proves that increase in the percentage of reinforcement particle instigates agglomeration on the AA6061 composites. Hardness test demonstrated that the inclusion of hard ZrO2 particles leads to substantial improvement in hardness and the hardness value started deteriorating when the composition reaches 15 per cent. The wear test results substantiated the enhancement of tribological property due to the inclusion of distinct ZrO2 particles. Also, despite of addition of reinforcements, the wear rate increased when the load increases. SEM images proved that AA6061/ZrO2-5 per cent composite fashioned steady-state mild and smooth wear. EDX spectrum analysis revealed the existence of ZrO2 particles along with wear debris, which caused wear of 685 µm in AA6061/ZrO2-15 per cent composite.

Originality/value

The developed material possesses low wear rate which is the unique property of composite and frictional force which is directly proportional to load but the coefficient of friction remains apparently constant. As a whole, investigations on developed composites introduce a new material which is suitable for manufacturing of brake components for automobile industry.

The paper aims to present a conceptual model that better defines critical success factors to ERP implementation organized with the technology, organization and environment (TOE) framework. The paper also adds to current literature the critical success factor of trust with the vendor, system and consultant which has largely been ignored in the past.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses past literature and theoretical and conceptual framework development to illustrate a new conceptual model that incorporates critical success factors that have both been empirically tied to ERP implementation success in the past and new insights into how trust impacts ERP implementation success.

Findings

The paper finds a lack of research depicted in how trust impacts ERP implementation success and likewise a lack of a greater conceptual model organized to provide insight into ERP implementation success.

Originality/value

The paper proposes a holistic conceptual framework for ERP implementation success and discusses the impact that trust with the vendor, system and consultant has on ERP implementation success.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the tangible and intangible benefits of two enterprises resource planning (ERP) packages namely SAP and Oracle. In particular, the operational benefits (OP), managerial benefits (MB), strategic benefits (SB), information technology (IT) benefits and organizational benefits (OR) of SAP and Oracle packages are scrutinized.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey method was employed to elicit opinions from SAP and Oracle ERP professionals. The empirical results are analyzed using smartPLS (Version 2.0) software. The results are further compared and contrasted with that of Deloitte and O'Leary's studies.

Findings

Through this study, it seems that the tangible benefits such as procurement cost reduction (32 percent for SAP; 30 percent for Oracle), financial cycle reduction (46 percent for SAP; 48 percent for Oracle), productivity improvements (50 percent for SAP; 41 percent for Oracle), personnel reduction (43 percent for both SAP and Oracle) and IT cost reduction (35 percent for SAP; 21 percent for Oracle) percentages indicate Indian companies have achieved more ERP benefits as compared to Deloitte and O'Leary's studies.

Research limitations/implications

Three limitations were identified in this study such as adoption of the survey instrument, potential for response bias associated with targeting packages and the research instrument targeted only for manufacturing organizations. In the future, one can analyze the ERP benefits based on the ERP life cycle stages such as initiation, adoption, adaptation, acceptance, routinization and infusion. Moreover, one can investigate all the benefits mentioned in the literature of Shang and Seddon's study as this study reveals only few tangible and intangible benefits. There is also a possibility of extending the study to the benefits in terms of pre‐ and post‐ERP implementation in manufacturing systems. Finally, introducing some moderators to see the effect on ERP benefits.

Practical implications

This paper provides new insights into the tangible and intangible benefits of SAP and Oracle ERP packages.

Originality/value

No prior study to the best of one's knowledge has been sought to explain in such benefits of SAP and Oracle ERP packages.

Abstract

Purpose

The success of Six Sigma implementation is known to depend on a number of critical factors. The purpose of this paper is to explore and analyse Six Sigma critical success factors (CSFs) in the context of Indian manufacturing organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

Although Six Sigma success factors have been amply researched in the global context, in this paper, a maiden attempt is made to identify, through an extensive literature review, the CSFs for Six Sigma implementation followed by their validation and prioritization using primary data collection from Indian companies. A total of 22 CSFs have thus been compiled through an extensive literature review. These CSFs are then validated through an empirical research of select Indian manufacturing companies at various stages of implementation of the Six Sigma process improvement methodology.

Findings

A factor analysis was used to finally reduce the 22 factors to seven groups of underlying CSFs, the top factors being use of right tools, measurement assurance, innovation and supplier collaboration. Based on the factors extracted, a Six Sigma adoption model has been proposed in the Asian context.

Research limitations/implications

The factor analysis of CSFs of the Indian manufacturing organizations selected in this study demonstrates that the top factor is a composite factor showing combination of the ability of the project teams to use the right tools, measurement assurance, innovation and creativity skills in problem solving, and also the long‐term supplier collaboration of the firm. Perhaps there has been an overemphasis on the role and commitment of the management in the success of a Six Sigma program. Though it is undisputed, certain other factors also play an equally important role in ensuring that the Six Sigma programs are successful.

Originality/value

The CSFs extracted through the factor analysis could provide a basis for manufacturing organizations embarking on the Six Sigma journey to look beyond just management involvement and develop an integrated framework of other factors as outlined and give them appropriate priority and focus. The study could well be extended to service industries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to the increasing need for high-speed low-power data transmissions over frequency-selective fading channels has drawn attention to suggest dual-carrier modulation (DCM) for multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transceivers for ultra wideband (UWB) wireless personal area network (WPAN).

Design/methodology/approach

Under frequency-selective fading channel conditions, the decoder is not sufficient enough to decode the transmission bits of severely attenuated data tones. Hence, the authors suggest DCM for a multiband OFDM transceiver because of its multiple capability of providing both frequency diversity and coding gain. It also resulted in low bit-error-rate (BER) at a given signal- to-noise ratio when compared to conventional multiband OFDM system. To achieve an optimised BER, DCM transforms four re-ordered bits into two quaternary phase shift keying symbols and further transforms to two 16-quadrature amplitude modulation-like (16-QAM) symbols with a suitable mapping technique, and at the receiver end, they are decoded with maximum likelihood decision rule. After performing the transformation, the outage probability and average BER expressions are derived to analyse the system performance.

Findings

DCM is suitable for high data rate transmission and is immune to frequency-selective fading. The outage and BER performance outstands over conventional multiband OFDM transceiver because of the inclusion of DCM mapping.

Practical implications

It is widely used in WPANs such as high definition multimedia interface and wireless universal serial bus.

Originality/value

This paper derives novel closed-form outage probability and a tight upper bound on average BER expressions for DCM-based multiband OFDM UWB transceiver over frequency-selective Nakagami-m fading channels for any arbitrary value of m. For this, moment-generating function of sum of squared, independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Nakagami-m random variables are used. Further, the system performance is also validated for the case of exponential decaying power delay profile, and the simulation results are provided to check the accuracy of the derived expressions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the existence of studies, by exploring the current literatures, on interaction among actors in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation.

Design/methodology/approach

A new classification framework is offered, along with the two dimensions of ERP implementation: determinants and outcomes, to provide four types of research classes. Hundreds of articles were searched by using keywords from journal data bases. The selected articles were grouped based on the new classification of ERP implementation, followed by an in-depth analysis by using the Context, Intervention, Mechanism, Outcomes logic and the system of systems methodologies (SOSM) framework.

Findings

The interactions among actors in ERP implementation have been overlooked, although there is almost always disagreements, misperceptions, and conflicts. Managing the interactions among actors is considered important because common failures in ERP implementation are often caused by mismanaged interactions among the key actors. Unfortunately, the existing research has so far shown a small effort to study how the actors’ interactions are managed.

Research limitations/implications

One key limitation of this research is that the number of actor-related articles is lesser than the factor-related articles. Further research should be conducted to explain how to manage the interactions among the actors in each stage of ERP implementation.

Practical implications

A guidance to prepare the entire organization prior to the ERP implementation to seriously consider the typical conflict among actors on each stage of ERP implementation and its causal factors and how to resolve them.

Social implications

The importance of understanding typical conflict among actors, its causal factors, and how to resolve them can be extended to other projects or social phenomenon.

Originality/value

This proposed framework is new to the ERP literature and serves to identify and expand further research on actors’ interactions to improve the success of ERP implementation. This is the first research to identify the interactions among actors in ERP implementation by using a clearly structured methodological approach, which is conducted by critically reviewing the ERP implementation literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents a novel multi-objective optimization model aimed at enhancing the success rate of resource planning (RP) implementation. The model optimization is developed based on the organizational structure types, fit-gap contingency analysis reports, uncertainty optimization problems on implementation schedule time and relative time and budget constraints.

Design/methodology/approach

Two pivotal strategies are employed: RP tools redesign through customization and organizational redesign. The synergistic integration of these strategies is essential, recognizing that RP tools implementation success hinges not only on technical aspects but also on aligning the system with organizational structure, culture and practices. In the analysis phase, a committee of experts identifies the initial gaps, which are evaluated through three conflicting objective functions: cost, time and penalty and running by the e-constraint method. In case of uncertainty nature time of RP tools implementation, the Activity-on-Arrow (A-O-A) method has been utilized.

Findings

The e-constraint method is utilized to derive the Pareto-optimal front, representing solutions effectively addressing identified gaps. A compromised solution is then proposed using the LP-metric method to strike a balance between conflicting objectives, ultimately improving RP tool implementation by reducing misfits.

Originality/value

To demonstrate and validate the model, a controlled case study is initially presented, illustrating its effectiveness. Subsequently, a real industry case study is provided, further validating the model’s applicability and practical relevance. This comprehensive approach offers valuable insights to optimize RP tool implementation outcomes, a critical concern for organizations undergoing technological transitions.
