Abstract

Alternative presses, a subset of small presses, have hundreds of titles in print, many of substantial quality. Most of the titles are unknown to librarians and fall to be included in traditional collection development aids or methods. A few are worthwhile reference works. In this article, Anderson introduces 44 titles from 26 presses. The bibliography is arranged by press name with complete contact information. The introduction outlines why alternative press books fail to get recognized and why they should be taken seriously.

Abstract

Career planning quickly becomes a search for information. This information is likely to be found in different locations throughout a community, school system, or college campus, and the library is one of these. While the library may not be the focus of career planning services, it plays a strong complementary role to established services. In particular, libraries can provide information that helps high school or college students or recent graduates explore their career options. This article will present a method for building library collections in career planning and suggest sources that help meet diverse student needs.

Abstract

CD‐ROMs proliferate in libraries and replace paper copy. Much has been written on the capabilities of the new technology, little on the actual content offered by CD‐ROMs or on content comparison between that offered by paper and the new form. Reviews the MLA International Bibliography on CD‐ROM and compares its contents with alternative print sources. Considers coverage for selected authors and the conclusion reached that the MLA International CD‐ROM database is not comprehensive and may omit information which is available elsewhere, for instance in print paper form.

Abstract

Purpose

Reviews the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoints practical implications from cutting‐edge research and case studies.

Design/methodology/approach

This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context.

Findings

Young people are often targeted heavily in advertising campaigns for new and growing products, and there are several reasons that companies might go down this marketing road. Brand strategists could feel that going for the youth market makes the product seem more attractive, or “sexy”. There is also the commonly‐held view that young consumers are easier to attract, because they have less fixed views on brands and therefore are not inhibited in their choices by brand loyalty.

Practical implications

Provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world's leading organizations.

Originality/value

The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy‐to digest format.

The discussion identifies a number of criteria for evaluating literary research Web sites, including relevancy, credibility and documentation. Abstract

Based on a talk given at the ALCTS/CMDS meeting at ALA Midwinter 1998, argues that outsourcing approval plans to vendors creates a prejudice against the alternative press. Business is guided by the interests of corporate America rather than those of providing exposure to all points of view. Argues that as the last truly free public space in America, library managers have a duty to make alternative materials available for use and to secure the independence, integrity and accountability of America’s libraries.
