Abstract
Purpose
Many studies have investigated the relationship between the adoption of open innovation and performance in large firms. However, limited research is available with regard to the use of open innovation in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). SMEs are important because of their contribution to innovation in almost all economies. The purpose of this paper is to extend the current literature by focusing on SMEs. Using complementarity and knowledge-based theories, this study develops three hypotheses to identify the effect of knowledge sourcing approaches for innovation on SMEs’ innovation performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Surveys collected from 196 SMEs in Korea were analyzed using the supermodularity function to test the hypotheses.
Findings
Results indicate that an external knowledge-oriented approach has no significant effect, whereas an internal knowledge-oriented (i.e. closed) approach has a positive effect on innovation performance. Interestingly, this study found that open innovation has a negative effect on SMEs’ innovation performance (i.e. both internal knowledge-oriented and external knowledge-oriented approaches have a substitutive relationship).
Originality/value
This study sheds new light on open innovation and knowledge management research by identifying the relationship between knowledge sourcing approaches for innovation, and innovation performance in SMEs. Practical implications highlight that open innovation could impede SMEs’ innovation performance.

This paper aims to analyze the publication structure of academic research on organizational creativity between 1975 and 2022.
Design/methodology/approach
Bibliographic data on organizational creativity are extracted from the Scopus database and then analyzed through VOSviewer and R Statistical Software.
Findings
This paper analyzes 416 publications on organizational creativity from 1975 to 2022. Accordingly, the study identifies the most productive countries, universities, authors, journals and prolific organizational creativity publications. Also, the study uses VOSviewer and R Statistical Software Bibliometrix Package to visualize the mapping based on co-citation, bibliographic coupling and co-occurrence of keywords.
Originality/value
The study’s main contribution is that it provides an overview of the trends and trajectories of organizational creativity, which may help researchers and practitioners comprehend the trends and future research directions.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore the requirements of organizational knowledge management initiatives using requirements engineering techniques, identifying the optimal techniques configuration and serving as a management tool for knowledge engineers.
Design/methodology/approach
The method is selection attributes. Knowledge management enablers are characterized and mapped with the coverage capabilities of requirements engineering techniques, using the attributes of the elicited object and a box-plot analysis. The information is gathered from 280 references, 32 companies and 16 experts in requirements engineering.
Findings
Requirements of organizational knowledge management initiatives are got optimally by combining interviews, use cases, scenarios, laddering and focus group techniques. The requirements of structure and processes are more complex to identify, while culture requirements are the best covered.
Research limitations/implications
Knowledge management enablers are analyzed according to the current studies and comprehension of engineering techniques.
Practical implications
Knowledge engineers need to consider the coverage capabilities of engineering techniques to design an optimal requirement identification and meet the objectives of organizational knowledge acquisition initiatives. Requirement engineers can improve the requirements identification by a staged selection process.
Social implications
The requirements of knowledge management initiatives that impact the community can be identified and traced to ensure the knowledge objectives. Requirements related to culture and people, like shared values, beliefs, and behaviors, are also considered.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study about formal requirement identification of knowledge management initiatives in the organizational context, providing the optimal configuration. A novel staged process is proposed for requirements engineering techniques selection, analyzing the enablers at component level and identifying the attributes associated with the elicited object.
