Abstract

The basement and the first 11 floors, including the superb banking hall, were handed over in July and became fully operational at the beginning of August. The upper sections of the building are being progressively handed over; the whole building will be completed by November. Architects Foster Associates have worked with their client, the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, to produce far more than a serviced shell; the building incorporates a host of sophisticated systems related to the various operational functions of the bank and has been termed a ‘finance factory’.

Abstract

Purpose

Water is a unique resource that does not receive enough attention among companies given its essential contribution to human life. Its uniqueness among all resources results from its environmental, socio-political and economic characteristics. The purpose of this paper is to explore water's uniqueness to companies, especially how one company, Coca-Cola, is currently managing this resource and to describe a few serious challenges that companies will face.

Design/methodology/approach

Coca-Cola has become a leader among these corporations, and we can learn from this company about suggested actions that others might want to use.

Findings

The major actions that companies must take relate to impact assessment and reporting, increased stewardship as a corporate responsibility, observing principles of sustainability and the increased recognition of water in all environmental policies and regulatory actions, partnerships with government and non-government organizations, and technology and design, i.e. allocating financial and human capital to develop new technologies.

Originality/value

Several corporations, in recognizing water's uniqueness as a resource, have taken actions for its management.

Abstract

MORE significant changes have taken place in the development and application of cutting oils and fluids than with any other type of industrial lubricant during the past 10 years. Hydraulic, compressor, gear oils and others have all had various properties enhanced to meet the more severe demands made on them but there have been few radical changes.

Abstract

The case, briefly reported in the last issue of BFJ, an appeal to a Milk and Dairies Tribunal arising out of a local authority's refusal to grant a licence to a milk distributor because he failed to comply with a requirement that he should provide protective curtains to his milk floats, was a rare and in many ways, an interesting event. The Tribunal in this case was set up under reg. 16(2) (f), Milk (Special Designation) Regulations, 1963, constituted in accordance with Part I, clause 2 (2), Schedule 4 of the Regulations. Part II outlines procedure for such tribunals. The Tribunal is similar to that authorized by S.30, Food and Drugs Act, 1955, which deals with the registration of dairymen, dairy farms and farmers, and the Milk and Dairies (General) Regulations, 1959. Part II, Schedule 2 of the Act provided for reference to a tribunal of appeals against refusal or cancellation of registration by the Ministry, but of producers only. A local authority's power to refuse to register or cancellation contained in Part I, Schedule 2 provided for no such reference and related to instances where “public health is or is likely to be endangered by any act or default” of such a person, who was given the right of appeal against refusal to register, etc., to a magistrates' court. No such limitation exists in respect of the revoking, suspending, refusal to renew a licence under the Milk (Special Designation) Regulations, 1963; an appeal against same lies to the Minister, who must refer the matter to a tribunal, if the person so requests. This occurred in the case under discussion.

Abstract

The following report details a media conversion project undertaken at Northumbrian Water's Head Office based in Durham. Drawing on experience of a pilot document image processing (DIP) system for invoices the project covers the Asset Management Plan which is a detailed assessment of every company asset and its business value as at 31st July, 1994. Although this was a genuine project it was written up as an assessed piece of work for the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. It addresses subjects covered in the Non‐Current Records and Media Conversion Unit of the Information and Records Management Post Graduate Diploma course. The project was written specifically to show an appropriate level of understanding of the course unit — some points are deliberately stressed for the purposes of the assignment.

Abstract

This article analyzes a classroom project that integrated desktop documentary making with an educational foundations course in order to foster empathetic development in pre-service teachers toward unfamiliar cultural groups. The project required each tertiary student in the course to create a desktop documentary about the school experience of a cultural group with which they did not immediately identify with. The findings indicate that half of the students in this project displayed empathetic development with regard to their chosen topics, using their encounters with imagery and stories to link their world with that which was unfamiliar. Additionally, as a result of the compositional process, several students became advocates for their assigned cultural group, carrying this sentiment with them as they progressed to become teachers. Implications of this study, including possible approaches toward improving this project’s effectiveness in achieving its aims, are discussed.
