Abstract

Synopsis

This case is intended to introduce undergraduate entrepreneurship students to business models via an entrepreneur who has two businesses: a used-car dealership, which he owns with his father, and a used-sport-bike dealership, which he solely owns. Although these businesses seem similar, there are subtle differences in business model that make the sport-bike business much more attractive. Case analysis involves a step-by-step comparison of the two firms' revenue models, cost structures, and investment needs and leaves students with two decision: first, how to best grow the sport-bike business, and second, whether to continue operating the used-car business once his father retires.

Research methodology

Primary interviews, company document review, secondary market research.

Relevant courses and levels

Undergraduate introduction to entrepreneurship.

Abstract

The resource‐based view (RBV) has been used on various industry studies. To examine the resources required to thrive in the private housing development sector in Malaysia, the RBV was similarly utilised. Using a combination of mailed questionnaires and face‐to‐face interviews, the study identified and ranked fourteen resources by virtue of their ability to exploit opportunities and/or neutralise threats, or in short, value. While the ranking of some of the resources echoe similar past industry studies, others interestingly did not, perhaps due to the unique characteristics of the industry, or even country. New players to the industry can take stock of the findings to maximise their chances of success. The paper ends by recommending that the study be repeated in Malaysia, this time with many more respondent, to confirm the findings. It also proposes that similar studies be conducted in other countries to enable cross‐country comparisons to be made.

Abstract

Purpose

Business “rules” (for the way value is created) are rapidly evolving, necessitating transformational change. The confluence of several factors – the Internet, innovative new technologies, changing consumer preferences, intensified global competition, and the proliferation of fast‐evolving social technologies that connect people and ideas – is driving the need to change. This paper aims to investigate these issues/

Design/methodology/approach

The paper looks at eight new rules which have been identified through research on 100 technology start‐ups and 40 early adopter large enterprises that were then refined based on insights from technology analysts, IBM business leaders and the venture capital community.

Findings

The paper finds that these rules, referred to as Value 2.0, illustrate unique ways in which emerging technologies are enabling new value creation in an enterprise.

Practical implications

Corporations can use the eight rules to capitalize on new markets and business models, get closer to markets and customers and create new capabilities

Originality/value

The Value 2.0 proficiencies described in the article seem likely to be critical in coming years for corporations in many industries.

Abstract

One of the fashionable talking points of the moment is the electronic microprocessor. It has suddenly become news. The government is to spend an initial £50 million of taxpayers' money on establishing a Microelectronics Unit; domestic appliances are now advertised as ‘containing MPUs — an electronic marvel with many thousands of transistors in a minute space’. Already, in the United States, a huge complex of companies who design and manufacture MPUs and similar devices has assembled in what is known as Silicon Valley (actually the Santa Clara Valley) in the same way that cars gravitated to Detroit and music to Memphis. Machines are in operation, and many more are being designed, which can simulate the thinking process and make decisions on the basis of data fed to them or which they can call for. Machines that think can be seen as a potential threat to some workers and fears are already being expressed about the effect of the MPU revolution on the work situation and on unemployment in particular. There can be no doubt that most jobs as we know them today will be changed, some of them out of all recognition, by this latest innovation — the MPU Revolution.
