Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to seek to ascertain how many electronic resource troubleshooting LibGuides are in use and what level of support they tend to provide. LibGuides have become quite popular in academic libraries as a tool for subject and college liaison librarians to deliver library-mediated content to colleges and individual classes. Another promising area for their use is to provide electronic resource troubleshooting support to students and faculty, as well as to other library staff.
Design/methodology/approach
A sample of electronic resource troubleshooting LibGuides was obtained through a Google advanced search augmented by additional searches in the limited LibGuides community search utility. These LibGuides were selected according to a standard definition of troubleshooting and were analyzed for content on 36 support variables.
Findings
A relatively small number of LibGuides were located, and a thorough treatment of electronic resource access issues was present in only a limited number of the LibGuides found.
Research limitations/implications
While some LibGuides may have gone undiscovered owing to an incomplete search strategy for discovery, subsequent efforts to find overlooked pages were mostly fruitless. The relatively small number of electronic resource troubleshooting LibGuides discovered coupled with their simplicity may indicate that the use of LibGuides platform in this capacity has not gained traction.
Originality/value
While there have been many case studies discussing the use of LibGuides as a subject and course guide platform, relatively few have explored the use of LibGuides outside of their traditional subject-focused implementation, and none have looked at LibGuides as a potential platform to aid in electronic resource access troubleshooting.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to analyse the character and strength of the claims made in an emerging literature offering a sociology of financial reporting principles.
Design/methodology/approach
The analysis evaluates exemplary works in the literature against the characteristics of the paranoid style first identified by Richard Hofstadter: overheated claims of a far-reaching, malign and collusive machinery of influence; a reductive, rationalistic and dualistic reading of events; weak empirics; and weak theorisation.
Findings
A significant stream within the literature is coming to be constructed in the paranoid style. Paranoid stylistics, used as a diagnostic tool, alerts us here to distorted judgement.
Research limitations/implications
Alternative ways of avoiding the dangers of paranoid-style readings are suggested, ranging from resisting the temptations towards such readings to a radical re-working of the epistemics of “socio-accounting”.
Practical implications
The danger of allowing the conclusions advanced in the literature to go unchallenged is that they may influence society’s attitude to accounting, public policy-making and scholars’ willingness to contribute to the crafting of reporting principles and standards.
Originality/value
Although paranoid style analysis has been widely used to examine narratives in other academic fields, to the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study to apply it to scholarly accounting.

Abstract
The American health care system continues to be one of the nation′s greatest concerns. Expenditure on the system is rocketing because of new methods of delivering care plus the costs of new technology and so new methods must be found to make the system more cost effective and efficient.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the relationship between the correlation among the 30 stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and overall returns on the broader market from 1950 to 2008.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper computes historical correlation of the 30 stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and future returns on the S&P 500 index over various windows and examines the relationship between these two items using linear regression analysis. In addition, the paper develops a trading strategy based on the results.
Findings
The paper finds that increased equity correlation serves as a leading indicator of overall market decline. Regression analysis shows that equity correlations are a statistically significant predictor of market decline, as measured by subsequent returns of the S&P 500 index. The significance of the results increases as the time horizon of the calculation is increased. With the exception of the 1990s, the findings are robust within decades.
Originality/value
This is the first study that examines the relationship between the historical correlations among the Dow 30 stocks with future returns for the S&P 500 index. In addition, the paper develops an original trading strategy that achieves superior returns to a buy-and-hold strategy. The paper's findings are useful to portfolio managers, practitioners, and policymakers.

Abstract
The accelerating globalization of business and integration of financial markets are affecting the equity investment environment of emerging markets (EMS). For the study period, we do not observe statistically significant region or industry effects on the returns of the EMS country equity indexes. All measurements indicate a high degree of integration for EMS regions and broad industry categories. The relative size of region and industry effects and Pearson correlations, however, indicate the dominance of region effects over industry effects. In the EMS world, as a starting step, regional diversification will be more efficient than industrial diversification.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this paper is to provide an advanced understanding of the dynamics of a scholarly career.
Design/methodology/approach
An assemblage of a theoretic lens was adopted to help make sense of how the focal scholar came to have certain capacities and characteristics and how these evolved over time.
Findings
The critical determinants of the capacities of this scholar have arisen from intersections with the institutions she has been a part of and individuals with whom she has been privileged to interact.
Originality/value
This paper is the first to adapt an assemblage theoretic lens to make sense of a professional’s career accomplishments and trajectory and to draw inferences for career management from this perspective.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this survey is to find a significant sample of reference resources for electrical engineering as they are presented in subject-specific LibGuides.
Design/methodology/approach
The survey is based on a detailed observation and collection of sources designated as Reference Resources in LibGuides, titles found were compiled and organized.
Findings
The results are substantial; they offered a body of specialized resources, which includes e-book collections, dictionaries, handbooks, encyclopedias and other resources that are important to electrical engineering students and researchers.
Research limitations/implications
A considerable amount of resources were found; nevertheless, they represent the resources found in a randomly selected sample of LibGuides; therefore, the result is limited to the group of libraries selected.
Practical implications
The results of this survey are valuable to subject librarians interested in comparing resources with a pool of libraries and to discover titles that can be of interest to their collections.
Originality/value
The work is original, as this is the first paper publishing the results of a survey of electrical engineering guides.

Abstract
Students at the Polytechnic of the South Bank in London, in two separate and unconnected cases, have discovered that their courses do not lead to the professional qualifications which were offered in the college prospectus. The first case involves about a dozen students who joined the four‐year Diploma in Mechanical Engineering course in its final year, holding HND qualifications from other colleges. Over 50 students are involved in the other case concerning the HND in civil engineering at the College. They have discovered that, contrary to their expectations, they can no longer assume that they will be sponsored by a professional institute. Both cases have serious implications for the students affected because their career opportunities are jeopardised if they are not able to become chartered engineers and members of the Institutes.
