Abstract

A month or so after the Stresa meeting, the French ISHM chapter, organising a session on ‘Gallic inks’ (!), summoned me to deliver some comments on the 5th European Hybrid Microelectronics Conference. Although it was only a matter of interlude during this technical session, I felt the task quite a difficult one. It became a hazardous project when Brian C. Waterfield kindly asked me to let what is in fact a personal opinion—my personal opinion, standing back from my daily work—appear in Hybrid Circuits. I'll do my best.

Abstract

I was an invited speaker to the ISHM‐Benelux meeting. As I arrived early, I also sat in on the committee meeting as an observer. Jos B. Peeters was the outgoing president and the incoming committee was widened to about 15 members compared with the previous 6. Following the unanimous election of all those nominated, the committee reconvened and elected Mr Kwikkers as the new president of ISHM‐Benelux. He is a professor at the Technische Hogeschole in Delft.

Abstract

The Batten and Allen story is a success story that follows the pattern of so many successful enterprises. The ingredients have to be first the people involved and their determination, endurance, patience and not least a market. Stamping of metal parts is to a great extent the role of a jobbing shop in many cases where companies have grown up almost as satellites of larger companies and have met the needs of the customer as it has grown and of course suffered with it also when bad times have come along.

Abstract

The visitor to Nice stepping from the relative cool of his aeroplane into a temperature of 37°C would be most likely to be on his way to the white pebble beach, perfumed with Ambre Solaire and definitely overpopulated. On this occasion the visitor, just a few kilometres from the airport, turned his back on the sweltering beach and took the boulevard de la Madeleine where after a few minutes' drive he was deposited at the door of SFERNICE. The Société Francaise del'Electro‐Résistance was founded here in Nice in 1938, the first electronics business to be established on the French Riviera, gradually growing to become a leading European manufacturer of resistive components, broadening its range from 1977 by acquiring other companies making complementary products. Nicolitch at Evry was the first of these, a manufacturer of printed circuit boards for the professional sector with a 1984 turnover of FF972 million. Their heating circuits have received CNES approval for space use and the recent launch of SFERFLEX flexible circuits has resulted in a steady flow of work.

Abstract

It seems incredible that the microelectonics industry is obsessed by establishing itself in the overcrowded South East of England, where any journey by road is little short of a nightmare, when the North of the country is blessed with fine roads, connecting the uncrowded towns that are to be found on either side of the Pennines. One of these towns is Hartlepool, situated on the coast between Tyneside and Teesside. An airy town in both senses of the word—the air from the sea is fresh from the Pole, and the houses are well spaced out—Hartlepool has also suffered its share of declining industry, with unemployment now running at some 30%. Whilst the huge GEC telephone exchange works is a shadow of its former self, the port once into shipbuilding now handles all the Vauxhall car traffic from the GM European plants. To supplement the comprehensive road network the airports at Teesside and Newcastle are growing in significance, services from the latter being available to Scandinavia, Holland, France and other parts of Europe.

Abstract

ISHM (UK) presented a technical meeting on this topic on the 23rd October 1982 at the Cunard International Hotel, London. The meeting was attended by some 50 engineers, both those involved in the field of hybrids and potential users. It was generally felt that this was a useful meeting but more especially that it would have appealed to many potential users of hybrids, had the right people been able to be contacted.

Abstract

The Benelux chapter has made a habit of organising meetings with a scientific and commercial accent more or less alternately. This approach has proven to be successful in the past three years. The 1986 Autumn meeting will be another display meeting. A number of papers will be presented by suppliers of materials and equipment for the hybrid and surface mounting industry. In a 300 m2 exhibition room about 25 companies will display their products. The programme of the day leaves ample opportunity for meeting colleagues and suppliers. The meeting will be held in the ‘Jaarbeurs Vergadercentrum’ in Utrecht on 16 October from 9.30–17.00. The annual ISHM‐Benelux general membership meeting will precede the lectures.
