Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to demonstrate the principle and practical applications of hyperspectral object detection, carry out the problem we now face and the possible solution. Also some challenges in this field are discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the paper summarized the current research status of the hyperspectral techniques. Then, the paper demonstrated the development of underwater hyperspectral techniques from three major aspects, which are UHI preprocess, unmixing and applications. Finally, the paper presents a conclusion of applications of hyperspectral imaging and future research directions.

Findings

Various methods and scenarios for underwater object detection with hyperspectral imaging are compared, which include preprocessing, unmixing and classification. A summary is made to demonstrate the application scope and results of different methods, which may play an important role in the application of underwater hyperspectral object detection in the future.

Originality/value

This paper introduced several methods of hyperspectral image process, give out the conclusion of the advantages and disadvantages of each method, then demonstrated the challenges we face and the possible way to deal with them.

Abstract

Purpose

Radical innovation involves significant technological advances that have a critical impact on both firm growth and society development. Therefore, there is a growing need to understand how to achieve radical innovation. While previous studies have examined the direct effect of digitization on firm innovation, there is still limited knowledge of how digitization affects radical innovation. This paper aims to contribute to further exploring the underlying mechanism of how digitization affects radical innovation by incorporating the serial mediation effect of absorptive capacity.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper collected data from Chinese-listed manufacturing firms from 2015 to 2021 and analyzed the data using bootstrap analysis.

Findings

The research results show that digitization has a positive impact on radical innovation. Furthermore, digitization can influence radical innovation through potential absorptive capacity and realized absorptive capacity, and the mediation effect of potential absorptive capacity and realized absorptive capacity can occur sequentially. These research results are validated by a range of robustness tests.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the literature on digitization and radical innovation by validating a model that links digitization through absorptive capacity to radical innovation. This model helps to explain the relationship between digitization and radical innovation, which has previously been a topic of debate. This paper also contributes to the absorptive capacity literature by unpacking the asymmetric roles of the potential absorptive capacity and the realized absorptive capacity. This paper also provides valuable implications for practices.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effect of microtextured tools on the geometric morphology of serrated chips, and further improve the cutting performance of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tool and extend the tool life and the surface quality of the machined surface.

Design/methodology/approach

A three-dimensional finite element cutting model of hardened steel AISI D2 with microtextured PCBN tools were established using the finite element software Abaqus, and cutting tests were carried out. Furthermore, the stress distribution in the primary deformation zone was investigated based on the triaxiality of stress, and the influence of microtexture on the geometric morphology of serrated chips and crack development was researched.

Findings

The results show that compared with nontexture tools, elliptical pits and wavy grooves microtexture tools have lower serrated degree Gs, higher serrated frequency f per unit length and more miniature serrated step Pc. The serrated phenomenon is intensified because the tensile stress zone of chips generated by nontextured tools is longer than that of elliptic pits and wavy grooves microtexture tools. Simultaneously, the maximum value of triaxiality in the tensile stress zone achieved by nontexture tools is larger than that of the two microtexture tools, and chips obtained by nontextured tools are more susceptible to propagation fractures.

Originality/value

This paper mainly studies the effect of microtexture on chip microgeometry, which is relatively little studied at present. At the same time, this paper has a certain engineering significance for PCBN tool turning hardening steel.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to clarify several commonly used quality cost models based on Juran’s characteristic curve. Through mathematical deduction, the lowest point of quality cost and the lowest level of quality level (often depicted by qualification rate) can be obtained. This paper also aims to introduce a new prediction model, namely discrete grey model (DGM), to forecast the changing trend of quality cost.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper comes to the conclusion by means of mathematical deduction. To make it more clear, the authors get the lowest quality level and the lowest quality cost by taking the derivative of the equation of quality cost and quality level. By introducing the weakening buffer operator, the authors can significantly improve the prediction accuracy of DGM.

Findings

This paper demonstrates that DGM can be used to forecast quality cost based on Juran’s cost characteristic curve, especially when the authors do not have much information or the sample capacity is rather small. When operated by practical weakening buffer operator, the randomness of time series can be obviously weakened and the prediction accuracy can be significantly improved.

Practical implications

This paper uses a real case from a literature to verify the validity of discrete grey forecasting model, getting the conclusion that there is a certain degree of feasibility and rationality of DGM to forecast the variation tendency of quality cost.

Originality/value

This paper perfects the theory of quality cost based on Juran’s characteristic curve and expands the scope of application of grey system theory.

Abstract

A survey of small businesses in Kentucky was conducted in the area of total quality management. The objective of the research was to determine the level of effort of small manufacturing firms in quality management and the degree to which their managers are currently guided by the TQM model as opposed to the economic conformance model. Preliminary results indicate the degree of penetration of the TQM philosophy and concepts among managers in small manufacturing firms. Also studied were the important elements in the operation and management of these firms that promote or discourage the successful implementation of TQM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to investigate the path service quality → customer satisfaction → loyalty, at the level of constructs, drawing from the Greek insurance industry.

Design/methodology/approach

A SERVQUAL type service‐quality instrument is developed for Greek insurance. Confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses are used to determine the scale's dimensionality. Path analysis is utilized to examine a model linking service quality, customer satisfaction and loyalty at the level of constructs' individual determinants.

Findings

SERVQUAL's dimensionality is not confirmed. A non‐tangibles, tangibles structure exists in Greek insurance. “Tangibles” does not affect customer satisfaction while WOM is an antecedent of repurchasing intentions. Satisfaction does not directly influence the latter.

Research limitations/implications

This study suffers the limitation that it tests the fit of the model within the limits of a single service industry. Another limitation is availability sampling. However, the satisfactory fit of the estimated model allows for the study to be a reliable comparison basis for future research.

Practical implications

Insurance managers may use GIQUAL for measuring the quality of insurance services offered. They must improve the intangible rather than the tangible elements of service and direct their support mechanisms towards developing customers willing to engage in positive WOM. The proposed model can be used to provide comparable findings across sectors, countries and time provided that, in each case, an appropriately customized SERVQUAL type scale is used.

Originality/value

This study explores the service quality, satisfaction, and loyalty path at the level of specific dimensions drawing from Greek insurance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present an integrated data-driven framework for processing and analyzing large-scale vehicle maintenance records to get more comprehensive understanding on vehicle quality.

Design/methodology/approach

We propose a framework for vehicle quality analysis based on maintenance record mining and Bayesian Network. It includes the development of a comprehensive dictionary for efficient classification of maintenance items, and the establishment of a Bayesian Network model for vehicle quality evaluation. The vehicle design parameters, price and performance of functional systems are modeled as node variables in the Bayesian Network. Bayesian Network reasoning is then used to analyze the influence of these nodes on vehicle quality and their respective importance.

Findings

A case study using the maintenance records of 74 sport utility vehicle (SUV) models is presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed framework. Our results reveal that factors such as vehicle size, chassis issues and engine displacement, can affect the chance of vehicle failures and accidents. The influence of factors such as price and performance of engine and chassis show explicit regional differences.

Originality/value

Previous research usually focuses on limited maintenance records from a single vehicle producer, while our proposed framework enables efficient and systematic processing of larger-scale maintenance records for vehicle quality analysis, which can support auto companies, consumers and regulators to make better decisions in purchase choice-making, vehicle design and market regulation.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to show the existence of the systemic yoyo structure in human thoughts so that the human way of thinking is proven to have the same structure as that of the material world.

Design/methodology/approach

Parallel comparison is used to reveal the underlying structure existing in human thoughts.

Findings

After highlighting all the relevant ideas and concepts, which are behind each and every crisis in the foundations of mathematics, it becomes clear that some difficulties in the authors' understanding of nature are originated from confusing actual infinities with potential infinities, and vice versa. By pointing out the similarities and differences between these two kinds of infinities, then some hidden contradictions existing in the system of modern mathematics are handily picked out. Then, theoretically, using the authors' yoyo model, it is predicted that the fourth crisis in the foundations of mathematics has appeared. And, a plan of resolution of this new crisis is provided.

Originality/value

This paper shows the first time in history that human thought, the material world, and each economic entity, share a common structure – the systemic yoyo structure. And it proves the arrival of the fourth crisis in mathematics by using systems modeling and listing several; contradictions hidden deeply in the foundations of mathematics.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the necessary background information and literature in order to make this special issue self‐contained.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper comprises: an Introduction; Section 2 outlines the origin of the yoyo structure by presenting a brief historical account and the concept of whole evolution of systems; Section 3 introduces the literature on applications of the systemic yoyo model in areas of natural science, social science, epistemology, and practical disastrous weather forecasts; and Section 4 outlines what is contained in this special issue.

Findings

A personal account of aspects of a career in systems research and description of a personal ambition to introduce laws for social science and laws that make both natural and social sciences exact at the same time.

Originality/value

With regard to the systemic yoyo model, this paper presents an introduction to what has been accomplished by using this model and what will be presented in this special issue in order to provide all interested colleagues with an overall picture in terms of where the paper stands in the relevant research activities.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the dynamics of a coordinate monopoly with established, risk-neutral firms; how these firms compete by adjusting prices; and when new competition(s) might enter the market with expectations of making more profits than any of the incumbents.

Design/methodology/approach

All results are established on the intuition of systems research and the concept of Nash equilibria of game theory.

Findings

Established results include how in a developed marketplace, risk neutrality would lead to stagnation in profits and irrational decision on pricing, and a sufficient and necessary condition under which new competition(s) would enter, although the market is coordinately monopolized.

Research limitations/implications

Conclusions presented are initial results in the direction of research. More real-life-like, asymmetrical conditions need to be considered to see what variations of similar results could hold true.

Practical implications

Presented are an operational aspect on how to compete although the consequent level of profits might not change much or any at all and how some of the key issues on market entry timing are theoretically resolved.

Social implications

This work indicates that for the minimum objective of business survival, existing firms, no matter how established, have to without any choice participate in market competition and look for new market opportunities.

Originality/value

Other than the established thought-provoking results, this work is the first of its kind. It organically combines recent achievements of systems research with game theory to explore issues of marketing, market entry timing and the dynamics of business firms’ behaviors.
