Abstract

Discusses how BOC Special Gases found that the formal documentation of the ISO 9000 series helped capture and fix process improvements by seeking third‐party approval. Contends that since third‐party approval to ISO 9000 depends on the provision of objective evidence of the effective working of the quality management system, this system was an important source of data to feed the improvement process and to monitor outcomes. Concludes that in the future, the scope of the relationship between standards for management systems and the total quality process will extend. All the systems will produce data and measurements of failures which, through the total quality process, will lead to improvements that can be incorporated into the system.

Abstract

Numerical techniques and experimental methods for the electrical characterisation and design of large multilayer thick film circuit boards are discussed. The numerical techniques investigated here include the boundary element and finite element methods for the estimation of capacitance and inductance and the method of normal modes for the analysis of voltage crosstalk between coupled transmission lines. Three‐dimensional capacitance and inductance calculations are included for typical thick film signal line and power and ground grid plane configurations. Numerical results are compared with measured data obtained from carefully constructed test coupons. Electrical characteristics of several popular high speed logic families and their compatibility with multilayer thick film interconnects are discussed and guidelines for the design of large thick film circuit boards for high speed digital applications are presented.

Abstract

Now formed for almost two years, the Brazilian Printed Circuit Association, ABRACI (Associação Brasileira de Circuitos Impressos), held on 17–18 September 1987 at Curitiba its first seminar on printed circuit technology. The association, with 150 members, is going from strength to strength and the 1987 Seminar was attended by 250 persons from several states. Participants included representatives from well known international companies (Du Pont, Degussa, IBM, Unisys, etc.), Government, Universities and local companies. The programme of 16 papers was divided into four sessions: Market, Quality, Manufacturing and SMT. The two‐day event proved too short for the enthusiasm of participants.

Abstract

This paper asserts that the Rastafarian movement's ideological challenge to the Jamaican democracy became meaningful to the Afro-Jamaican poor and political elites for three reasons. First, given their origins among the Afro-Jamaican poor, the Rastafarians were able to construct resonant challenging frames out of a shared history and experience. The Rastafari were able to construct frames that were built upon the experiences and narratives of their target group. These frames tapped pre-existing pan-African visions such as Marcus Garvey's, the grinding poverty faced by many urban and rural Jamaicans, and benefited from the presence of actual African retentions such as the Revival religion. These emphases made the frames empirically credible and therefore particularly resonant to the Jamaican poor. Second, changing political opportunities, including changes in the political structure and the elevated prestige of the Rastafarian movement led some political elites to use Rastafarian frames to mobilize support among the poor, and helped shift Rastafarian frames from the periphery to the political mainstage. Third, certain mobilizing structures, including the popularity of Rastafarian reggae, augmented the dissemination of Rastafarian precepts. The paper highlights the interrelationship between culture and structure in a movement's emergence and success. Structure constrains movement possibilities, but the framing capablilities of movement actors help create maneuverability for the movement.
