Abstract
Purpose
A challenging task for context‐aware pervasive systems is reasoning about context in uncertain environments where sensors can be inaccurate or unreliable and inferred situations ambiguous and uncertain. This paper aims to address this grand challenge, with research in context awareness to provide feasible solutions by means of theoretical models, algorithms and reasoning approaches.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper proposes a theoretical model about context and a set of context verification procedures, built over the model and implemented in a context reasoning engine prototype. The verification procedures utilize beneficial characteristics of spatial representation of context and also provide guidelines based on heuristics that lead to resolution of conflicts arising due to context uncertainty. The engine's reasoning process is presented and it is shown how the proposed modeling and verification approach contributes in tackling the uncertainty associated with the reasoning task. The paper experimentally evaluates this approach with a distributed simulation of a sensor‐based office environment with unreliable and inaccurate sensors.
Findings
Important features of the model are dynamic aspects of context, such as context trajectory and stability of a pervasive system in given context. These can also be used for context verification as well as for context prediction. The model strength is also in its generality and its ability to model a variety of context‐aware scenarios comprising different types of information.
Originality/value
The paper describes a theoretical model for context and shows it is useful not only for context representation but also for developing reasoning and verification techniques for uncertain context.

Abstract
This paper addresses our desire to learn more about effective practices with film and our aspiration to promote a more inclusive curriculum. Specifically, we consider how the film Iron Jawed Angels impacted students’ understanding of the American women’s movement, particularly the fight for suffrage by the National Women’s Party, and examines the questions: (a) How can feature films be used to incorporate a close examination of the women’s movement into the curriculum? (b) How do students make sense of the women’s movement when it appears in a feature film during classroom activities? For most students, the film appeared to call important attention to women’s history. The results suggest that feature films with females as main characters or with a narrative based primarily on female perspectives can be used to promote engagement with women’s issues and to promote the inclusion of female perspectives in the secondary curriculum. However, we also found important differences between how female and male students responded to the film.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to develop an original conceptual framework to guide research into knowledge transmission between professional external knowledge providers and their business clientele. As such, the framework aims to bridge a gap between theory and practice by explicating the processes which affect knowledge transmission and the conversion of knowledge for business application (i.e. knowledge transference).
Design/methodology/approach
Key concepts from disciplines of knowledge management, information management, communications, services marketing and business advice are reviewed and integrated into the development of this framework. Underpinned by a critical realist philosophical lens, it provides a robust research guide for examining business advisor knowledge actions in a changing open environment.
Findings
This study identifies that the process of knowledge transmission from a source external to a business is more complex than internal knowledge sharing. It addresses this complexity through a knowledge transmission framework, in a research design that is applicable to any methodological paradigm. Real-world application is identified in its applicability for evaluating mechanisms to facilitate knowledge transmission practices of external advisors to small business in regionally isolated communities.
Research limitations/implications
The critical realist research methodology allows for causality in knowledge transmission to emerge; however, no assertion is made that the conceptual framework developed needs any particular philosophical paradigm for its application. Instead, what is asserted is that the research framework developed in this paper is specifically suited to the characteristics of external knowledge providers, their tacit knowledge and the businesses they service.
Originality/value
This study reconceptualises various theoretical perspectives and develops a sequential process for addressing a research lacuna by specifically examining the processes (or connections) between external business advisor’s knowledge and their advisory actions. With these processes clearly established, the role of external knowledge providers, as knowledge transmitters, deepens the understanding of knowledge transference that up until now has focused typically on internal organisation aspects.

Examines the debate over “Higher superstition” (Gross and Levitt, 1994). Puts forward the arguments in the book and the response to the book from members of the US science and technology studies community. Asserts that increases in technical control have been at the expense of social and individual control. Mentions “diversionary reframing” – changing the subject, possibly by diverting attention away from the subject matter to the person doing the criticizing. Explores public attitudes towards science and technology, quoting a number of layman approaches to the bafflement of science. Identifies the irony in Gross and Levitt’s arguments, particularly in developing the interface between science and technology. Recommends paying more attention to the social construction of beliefs.

THE Report of the Committee on Libraries, which was issued by the University Grants Committee in the summer of 1967, had for long been called the Parry Report after its Chairman, Dr. Thomas Parry, formerly Librarian of the National Library of Wales and at the time the Principal of University College of Wales in Aberystwyth. When it was first set up in June 1963 the terms of reference were as follows:
