Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the predictors of successful implementations of pay equity plans. Drawing on the perspective of organizational justice, this study highlights the factors that lead to the establishment of perceived fair pay for female-dominated jobs.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative data were collected from 107 respondents in a Canadian company that implemented a pay equity plan as required by the Quebec Pay Equity Act.

Findings

Justice perceptions of employees are based on: uniformity of implementation, bias suppression with respect to the right to fair pay, reliability of information on job content, relevance of job evaluation criteria, qualifications and impartiality of the pay equity committee members and the quality of employees’ representation and process transparency.

Research limitations/implications

This study was conducted at a single workplace and among relatively highly educated respondents. Replicating the study may allow to verify the transferability of the results by considering workers’ demographic characteristics and organizational culture.

Practical implications

The study highlights the cornerstones that may guide the development of an assessment tool of the effectiveness of pay equity processes. These results will additionally help employers to circumvent difficulties which may otherwise thwart the implementation of pay equity plans.

Originality/value

This study highlights how employees construct their perceptions of justice in a specific context. It sheds light on the salient features of the pay equity implementation, the sources of information involved and the justice rules used. This study also highlights the specific forms of the justice rules in this context.

Abstract

This chapter develops a framework for quantile regression in binary longitudinal data settings. A novel Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is designed to fit the model and its computational efficiency is demonstrated in a simulation study. The proposed approach is flexible in that it can account for common and individual-specific parameters, as well as multivariate heterogeneity associated with several covariates. The methodology is applied to study female labor force participation and home ownership in the United States. The results offer new insights at the various quantiles, which are of interest to policymakers and researchers alike.

Abstract

Purpose

In this paper, the authors aim to propose to find the variables that affect the Taiwanese people’s satisfaction level of the general public with the government.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors intend to utilize the Bayesian quantile regression to explore the variables that affect the satisfaction of the general public at specific quantiles of Taiwanese satisfaction with the government and rough set classification to explore key variables related to the satisfaction level. Then they make the comparison of the classification among the two methods to obtain the performance of the classification.

Findings

The experiment result shows the major factors which have the positive relationship with the people who have higher satisfaction level with the central government. These factors include satisfaction with the uncorrupted performance of the central government; the evaluation of household’s economic condition one year after the present time; the satisfaction with the Taiwanese central government’s measures on food safety and the satisfaction with the 12 years primary education reform.

Originality/value

The study’s originality hinges on the application of Bayesian quantile regression and rough set classification to the analysis of the Taiwanese satisfaction with the government. It offers more insights on the key variables related to different satisfaction level and the classification performance between the two methods.

Abstract

Purpose

Yoghurt is most popular and more acceptable throughout the world because of its general positive image among consumers because of its diverse nutritional and therapeutic properties and can be the most suitable probiotic carrier. Key factors for consumer’s inclination towards functional foods are increased awareness for healthy foods because of health deterioration resulting from busy lifestyles, growing healthcare cost and the aspiration for an improved quality life in later years. Yoghurt is still not consumed in certain parts of the world because of a lack of a cultural tradition of consuming yogurt and further people are not aware of the health benefits associated with yogurt consumption. In this study an attempt has been to project probiotic yoghurt as a functional food in the current era of self-care and complementary medicine.

Design/methodology/approach

Attempt has been made to review the literature on the biochemical activities of yoghurt cultures and their behavior in association with diverse probiotic cultures. Both review and research papers related to biochemical activities and functional properties of yoghurt cultures in association with probiotics and their health benefits published in diverse journals under Pub Med and Science Direct have been considered. Keywords used for data search included functional foods, yoghurt, probiotic, health benefits, etc.

Findings

Functional properties of yoghurt can be further enhanced with fortification of minerals and vitamins or inclusion of probiotic cultures. Diversity in biochemical behavior yoghurt cultures in association with different probiotic cultures has been reported. Conjugated application of probiotics with yoghurt cultures would result in a product with enhanced functional properties to extend health benefits.

Originality/value

Inclusion of probiotic cultures in yoghurt is suggested to extend the functional properties of normal yoghurt, thus providing necessary nutrients, improving health and preventing or reducing nutrition-related diseases. Regular intake of probiotic yoghurt is suggested for healthy lifestyles, as it will help in retaining their health and reduce the potentially long-term risk of disease. Food industries can have profit-driven business by projecting the probiotic yoghurt as a functional food.
