Abstract
Purpose
Modern variable‐speed drive systems using frequency converters generate additional audible noise as a result of the voltages that are no longer sinusoidal. Using suitable measures, the purpose of this paper is to find an optimum for minimum noise radiation in the complete drive system.
Design/methodology/approach
The main areas to concentrate on to achieve an optimum are the source of excitation itself – the frequency converter, as well as the actual source of the noise, the motor. Optimization measures are drawn‐up using soundscaping with subsequent modal analysis of the actual state. The effectiveness of any changes made can be estimated using simulation techniques. This approach is confirmed by subsequently implementing the selected measures and verifying them by performing the appropriate measurements.
Findings
The paper takes care of the increasingly important field of converter‐fed drive systems and their special acoustical challenge. It shows a practical way to reduce audible noise combining measurements and simulations.
Originality/value
Combining the measurement of the acoustic camera with the simulation of modal shapes is a fast way for optimizing an inverter‐fed drive system.

Purpose
This research has the purpose of examining whether personality preferences and type from the Myers‐Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) are related to managerial derailment.
Design/methodology/approach
This study is within the context of field research, using 6,124 managers undergoing leadership development processes. Survey methodology was used to assess a manager's self‐ratings of MBTI type and preference, and observer ratings (peer, boss, direct report) of managerial derailment characteristics.
Findings
Different MBTI preferences of managers are likely to display derailment characteristics as judged by observer perspectives. In an exploratory manner, the MBTI preferences and types are also examined in accordance with different managerial derailment clusters.
Research limitations/implications
The MBTI's conceptual foundation and psychometrics may be viewed as a limitation, and other personality theories like “The Big Five” could be used. Limitations of the study also include the fact that managers going through a leadership development process may be different to managers in general, and derailment characteristics do not necessarily mean actual managerial derailment.
Practical implications
Regardless of MBTI type or preference, managers can decrease their chances of managerial derailment through examining job fit, increasing self‐awareness, and through other mechanisms mentioned in the paper.
Originality/value
This study is unique, since MBTI preferences and types could signal whether managers display derailment characteristics to their co‐workers. Additionally, this paper gives insight into how managers can prevent derailment, regardless of their MBTI type and preference, thereby having special value for managers and those who study managerial development.

This paper discusses the educational benefits of this application for classroom use and develops a pedagogical exercise by which students can build interpersonal skills.
Findings
The iPocket Coach can not only be used to develop skills but learn about common management issues involving conflict resolutions, personal development, providing constructive feedback, interviewing, performance evaluations, promotions, rewards, and terminations.
Originality/value
The exercise developed can be used in a consumer behavior or sales management course that teaches students how to handle difficult customers.

Abstract
Gas permeability through damage networks in composite laminates is the key issue for the applicability of high‐performance composites to the cryogenic propellant tanks of space launch vehicles. A simple model for the gas permeability induced by multilayer matrix cracks in composite laminates is proposed based on the leak conductance at crack intersections, which is an extension of the model by Kumazawa et al (AIAA J. 41, 2037‐ ‐2044, 2003). Experimental evidence on the gas permeability mechanisms is summarized and reflected in the present model. In order to include the effects of applied loadings and damage sizes on the gas permeability, the leak conductance is assumed to be a function of the average crack opening displacements of the matrix cracks and the crack intersection angles. The leak conductance factor was empirically obtained as a function of the crack intersection angle, and the comparison of the gas permeability between the predictions based on the developed model and the experimental results is presented for the validity of this model.

Abstract
Purpose
In the literature there is very little exploration on how the Tibetan approach in leadership may be relevant for management. Here, for the first time, the paper discusses the ancient yet continuing practice of succession in leadership of the Kagyu Karma School of Tibetan Buddhism within the context of management practices. In so doing, the author suggests a theory of continuous consciousness for succession in leadership.
Design/methodology/approach
A multi‐method design is utilized in the research paper. First, the biographical literature on the 17 Karmapas is reviewed and content analyzed for insights: Who is the Karmapa? Second, the author, through a process of planned personal, activity‐based research, including field visits of ritual ceremonies, gathers insights on the Karmapa leadership in action. Furthermore, he was invited to host for HH The 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje a forum on, “Living a Meaningful Life in the Contemporary Age”. Third, comparative analyses of tenure of leadership are made of different succession approaches: Karmapa versus other systems of succession, for example Chinese dynastic system (Yuan, Ming, Qing and Chinese Communist Party) are presented. Fourth, traits in the leadership of the Karmapa are portrayed: symbolically, the divine parasol through a rare photograph. A parallel symbolism of leadership, especially the motif of the Sun is drawn between the Tibetan Karmapa and Han Chinese Mao Zedong. For this, the artistic method of montage is utilized to the findings. Fifth, drawing upon research on psychology (nineteenth century German psychologist, Ebbinghaus), the author suggests the memory tests employed by the Tibetans for selection of successor have some scientific basis. Finally, in discussion on corporate vision; from a review of past biographies of 16 Karmapas and for the first time a taxonomical portrayal of the visionary experiences of His Holiness is presented.
Findings
The continuity in the leadership of the Karmapas over almost 912 years (1100 BCE to present) is certainly one of the most remarkable in the history of mankind. It is the longest lineage of spiritual leaders within the Chinese minority, of the Tibetan culture. Among the theory of leadership, the case of Karmapa reinforces strongly the role of personality traits. Every Karmapa, including the present 17th has to manifest certain traits or signs to gain continuing acceptance as leader of the spiritual community. In a very sharp contrast to the very short tenure of American CEOs (statistically, graphically presented), the tenure of leadership for Kagyu Karma School of Buddhism is life‐long. Indeed, uniquely as a Tibetan practices in succession, multi‐lifetimes. In this paper, the author discusses how modern corporations may draw insights from this as unique case of institutionalizing the sustainability of leadership. Perhaps, there is a case for expanding the current paradigm of leadership research?
Originality/value
This paper highlights the value of management learning through research from ancient religious or spiritual traditions. In this case, the focus is on leadership succession and it is hoped this paper will foster inter‐disciplinary (management and spirituality) research by scholars.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to examine George Washington’s approach to leadership through the lens of contemporary leadership theory and practice; and second, to help modern managers further reflect upon and develop their own leadership capabilities through a historiographic examination of Washington’s leadership traits and skills.
Design/methodology/approach
Combining three different academic disciplines, management, psychology and history, the author utilized a historiographic and interdisciplinary research methodology, conducting a detailed exploration of the life of George Washington through an examination of a wide range of original archival materials, books, journal articles and other sources.
Findings
The present analysis reveals that Washington demonstrated a variety of well-validated leadership competencies (e.g. emotional intelligence, resilience, integrity, etc.) that are largely consistent with leader-centered theoretical conceptions of leadership.
Originality/value
This is the first historiographic study of George Washington’s approach to leadership within the management literature. Additionally, through the development of a competency model, the study demonstrates how Washington employed tools and techniques from a host of modern leadership theories to achieve critically important results.
