Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a computational study to investigate the effects of rectangular cavity design of a piezoelectrically driven micro‐synthetic‐jet actuator on generated flow.

Design/methodology/approach

Flow simulations were done using a compressible Navier‐Stokes solver, which is based on finite element method implementation of a characteristic‐based‐split (CBS) algorithm. The algorithm uses arbitrary Lagrangian‐Eulerian formulation, which allows to model oscillation of the synthetic jet's diaphragm in a realistic manner. Since all simulated flows are in the slip‐flow‐regime, a second order slip‐velocity boundary condition was applied along the cavity and orifice walls. Flow simulations were done for micro‐synthetic‐jet configurations with various diaphragm deflections amplitudes, cavity heights, and widths. All of the simulation results were compared with each other and evaluated in terms of the exit jet velocities, slip‐velocities on the orifice wall and instantaneous momentum fluxes at the jet exit.

Findings

It is shown that compressibility and rarefaction have important effects on the flow field generated by the micro‐synthetic‐jet actuator. The effect of the geometrical parameters of the cavity to important flow features such slip and phase lag are presented.

Originality/value

The paper reports results of a systematical study of the flow field inside a micro‐scale synthetic‐jet actuator, providing designers of such devices additional information for sizing the cavity within slip flow regime. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the CBS, together with slip boundary conditions can be successfully used to compute such flows.

Abstract

These are the Municipality Law No. 5216 and the Metropolitan Municipality Law No. 5393. The legislative body has determined it as a requirement for metropolitan municipalities to prepare strategic plans through the Public Financial Management and Control Law No. 5018. In this study, the compliance of the strategic plans prepared by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) for the period 2015–2019 and 2020–2024 with the 17 Global Development Goals of the United Nations will be examined. As a result of the study, it was aimed to compare the compatibility of both plans, which were prepared with different political understandings, with the 17 Global Development Goals. As a method in the study, the aims and objectives of the strategic plans of IMM in different periods will be codified and then their compliance with the 17 Global Development Goals will be checked. Ultimately, the study aims to contribute to the public policy literature on the responsibility of public institutions on a scale ranging from local to global in achieving policy goals.

Abstract

Purpose

Although it is assumed that migration and tourism directly affect each other, neither has received enough attention in the literature. Moreover, the relationship between them remains unclear. The UNWTO interprets said relationship in two ways: tourism-led migration (TLM) and migration-led tourism (MLT). The latter is crucial for the marketing of tourism. This study aims to clarify the migration-tourism relationship in ways the relevant literature has inadequately addressed and to evaluate the significance of MLT for Turkey's tourism marketing.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was carried out with a qualitative research design. Document scanning was used to collect data. A time series analysis was performed based on secondary data. Vector autoregressive models (VARs), which test the relationship between two or more variables, were preferred in the analysis selection. The empirical evidence depends on annual data of German tourists visiting Turkey and persons admitted to Germany from 2006 to 2019.

Findings

The findings of the study revealed a significant short-term relationship between those immigrating to Germany and tourists visiting Turkey.

Practical implications

The research shows that migration is a factor in the purchasing behavior of touristic products. In this respect, the practical conclusion of the study reveals that it may be beneficial for national tourism marketers in these countries to promote touristic products through citizens who have migrated abroad.

Originality/value

In the relevant literature, the relationship between tourism and migration (RTM) has been limitedly examined from an MLT perspective. In this respect, the subject has not been examined in detail in many respects (distribution by years, various sampling and data collection technique, etc.). The present research helps fill this literature gap by addressing the subject directly.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is threefold: first, to investigate the role of big data and predictive analytics (BDPA) and social capital on the performance of humanitarian supply chains (HSCs); second, to explore the different performance measurement frameworks and develop a conceptual model for an HSC context that can be used by humanitarian organizations; and third, to provide insights for future research direction.

Design/methodology/approach

After a detailed review of relevant literature, grounded in resource-based view and social capital theory, the paper proposes a conceptual model that depicts the influence of BDPA and social capital on the performance of an HSC.

Findings

The study deliberates that BDPA as a capability improves the effectiveness of humanitarian missions to achieve its goals. It uncovers the fact that social capital binds people, organization or a country to form a network and has a critical role in the form of monetary or non-monetary support in disaster management. Further, it argues that social capital combined with BDPA capability can result in a better HSC performance.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed model integrating BDPA and social capital for HSC performance is conceptual and it needs to be empirically validated.

Practical implications

Organizations and practitioners may use this framework by mobilizing social capital, BDPA to enhance their abilities to help victims of calamities.

Social implications

Findings from study can help improve coordination among different stakeholders in HSC, effectiveness of humanitarian operations, which means lives saved and faster reconstruction process after disaster. Second, by implementing performance measurements framework recommended by study, donors and other stakeholders will get much desired transparency at each stage of HSCs.

Originality/value

The findings contribute to the missing link of social capital and BDPA to the existing performance of HSC literature, finally leading to a better HSC performance.

Abstract

The concept of bleisure is a tourism term that has emerged recently and has become popular. Participation of employees, especially managers and people in business who go on business trips, in leisure activities during their full-time business trips has revealed the bleisure trend. Although bleisure has emerged as a term in recent years, it has been seen that people combine vacations and business trips in previous years.

Considering the research on bleisure tourism, it is thought that bleisure tourism can be helpful to increase employee productivity. The fact that individuals who go on business trips very often are away from their family or friends can create a social deformation. However, people who go on business trips within the scope of bleisure tourism sometimes can take their close friends or family members with them. This provides extra motivation for bleisure tourists and increases work efficiency. However, it is beneficial to plan bleisure tourism. Excessive entertainment or shopping can lead to distraction, being late for work and being over budget on a business trip. For this reason, bleisure should be planned jointly with tourism agencies and companies.

Bleisure tourism will benefit business travellers, travel companies, hotels, restaurants, other tourism businesses and local people. For this reason, it is necessary to focus on studies related to bleisure tourism, a new tourism trend.

Abstract

The discovery of internet technologies which is one of the most important developments of the twenty-first century has enabled individuals and institutions to overcome geographical and time constraints creating fundamental changes in communication. As a result, online communities have enabled people to meet the internet for various reasons such as seeking and sharing information, discuss community issues and ask questions; and online communities have also enabled businesses and consumers to connect with each other at any time. Especially the emergence of Internet-based social media technologies such as blogs, virtual communities, wikis, social networks, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram provides tourists to share their travel experiences. Information shared on social media sites is considered to be an important source of information that can help tourists’ travel plan and may even influence the travel decisions of potential tourists. In this context, the concept of social media in tourism businesses has been examined in the research. Within the framework of the research, it has been observed that social media has influenced the tourists’ behavior regarding travel motivations in the context of various motivations (having information about destinations, hotels, services of hotels, wondering about consumers’ experiences who were in touristic consumption before, etc.). It is also among other findings that social media has increased the overtourism crisis.

Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine the benefits of transforming a destination into smart destination (SD) to restart tourism after the COVID-19 outbreak, to match the dimensions of SD with restarting strategies, and to make conceptual inferences to serve this. For this purpose, two reports published by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) in 2020 were examined: Priorities for Tourism Recovery and Global Guidelines to Restart Tourism. Then, the contents of these reports and the dimensions of SDs were matched and a guiding model for tourism decision-makers was developed.

Abstract

Refugee students’1 education is disrupted by multiple spatial and temporal transitions – no matter where they come from, where they go, and what cause their forced migration. The first major disruption occurs with their flight from origin countries due to security or other reasons. The COVID-19 pandemic led to another dramatic disruption with a heightened risk of weakening hard-earned progress. This chapter examines an example of post-migration education opportunities for urban refugee students across two monolingual contexts at two critical junctures from their arrival in the destination countries to the COVID-19 outbreak. It discusses the readiness and responsiveness of Turkish and German education systems by examining the instances and consequences of disruption in refugee students’ education in İstanbul and Hamburg. A multiple case study design with critical policy analysis (CPA) was used. In addition to the available national statistics, empirical data drew on semi-structured in-depth interviews with refugee students and teachers. The background section maps out the trajectory of refugee education with a synthesis of the formal educational policies in Turkey and Germany toward the inclusion of refugee students into public schools. The findings first elaborate on the readiness of the Turkish and German contexts and a scoping review of the literature on the major issues in both settings. The second part explores the responsiveness of both education systems to refugee children’s education during the COVID-19 pandemic in both cases, namely, in İstanbul and Hamburg.

Abstract

Green destinations are places that are important for the sustainable realization of tourism. In addition to the design of these destinations, the management also emerges as an issue that needs to be emphasized. As a matter of fact, stakeholders and their relations with each other and other issues are an important element in the management of green destinations. In this context, in the study, issues such as management of green destinations, stakeholders, relations between stakeholders, education and green destination management in Türkiye are discussed. Finally, some suggestions have been presented within the framework of the topics discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to define the outcomes of bullying at work. In that sense, the study tries to define the effect of bullying at work on work alienation and the roles of political behavior perception and organizational alienation in this effect.

Design/methodology/approach

The study collects data from lecturers from a university in Turkey by using questionnaires. Structural equation model is used to test hypotheses.

Findings

The findings of the study show that political behavior perception has a mediating role over the effect of bullying at work on work alienation, and also that organizational alienation has a mediating role over the effect of political behavior perception on work alienation.

Practical implications

The study confirms that perception of bullying at work is determinant on the level of work alienation; thus, it is important to minimize bullying perception. This study shows both researchers and organizations that further potential vital problems to arise as a result of bullying will diminish once bullying at work is decreased.

Originality/value

The research tries to define the consecutives of bullying within a multi-level point of view. Additionally, as per the authors’ knowledge, there are no other studies in the literature that handle the related variables altogether.
