Abstract

Purpose

Records are current documents containing crucial personal, legal, financial and medical information, while archives house non-current documents with the same details. This study specifically aims to measure existing research in records and archives management with various scientific indicators.

Design/methodology/approach

Data extraction was conducted using the Web of Science, resulting in a data set of 2003 records for further analysis. Biblioshiny and VOSviewer have been used for mapping and visualization of the extracted data.

Findings

Managing and organizing this essential information is equally vital to maintaining records and archives. The findings encompass various aspects such as publications and citations, influential authors, source impact factors, relevant articles, affiliations, co-authorship trends across the top 10 countries and regions, references, publication year spectroscopy, keyword co-occurrence and historiography. The study concludes that medical records management prominently dominates the selected research area.

Originality/value

The study reflects the advancements in management systems and continues to emerge as research on the management of records and archives has gained significance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the management of records in Nigerian universities, in line with the Management Information Systems (MIS) programme put in place in federal universities by the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National University Commission to ensure effective and efficient decision making, based on available data.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on the management of records in Nigerian universities.

Findings

The study reveals that records management programmes or policy on records are not available in Nigerian universities; hence the administration of records is without recourse to the principles of records management. There is no University Records Manual, no records retention and disposition schedule, personnel handling the records are not trained in records management, inadequate facilities for the preservation, storage, and retrieval of records, no filing manual, inadequate computers to manage the volume of records generated and the attitude of administrators towards records and records management constitute the problems of records management in Nigerian universities.

Originality/value

The article notes a number of recommendations made to improving records management practices in Nigerian universities. The university management and administrators and personnel handling the records should develop a positive attitude towards records and implement records management programmes in Nigerian universities. Records have “life”, and should be allowed to live through their life cycle process. Above all, the use of these records in solving problems and taking far‐reaching decision, will reduce crises in Nigerian universities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the present digitization projects in Nigerian university libraries and the challenges they pose to effective information delivery.

Design/methodology/approach

The research method employs both qualitative and quantitative methods. The questionnaire is the major instrument used for data collection, with observation as complimentary instrument. The respondents constitute 40 professional and para‐professional staffers drawn from both universities.

Findings

The results from the paper reveal that the libraries lack written policy on digitization, inadequate ICT infrastructures and manpower, fund, and inadequate government support. Users are not given user education/digital literacy to enable them adequately utilizing the available digitized resources and services, thus posing challenges to effective information delivery.

Originality/value

The paper will make for a more conscious effort in institutionalizing digital library services, formulation and implementation of digitization policies, introduction of user education/digital literacy programmes and conscious staff training programme on ICTs for university libraries in Nigeria.

Abstract

Purpose

Archives and records are important resources for individuals, organizations and the country. The academic archives are created and maintained for the effective execution of university educational and corporate functions. The archives management practices in universities are being studied in the developed countries; however, a scarcity of empirical research is observed in the context of developing countries, for instance, Pakistan. Thus, the purpose of this study is to assess the archives management practices performed in the archival units of University of the Punjab (UoP), Lahore, in association with the successful execution of university educational functions.

Design/methodology/approach

A structured survey questionnaire was developed to collect responses from the record-keepers and archives monitoring staff using a complete enumerative (census) approach. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS 23.0 in addition to structural equation modeling (SEM) run in AMOS 22v.

Findings

The findings of this study revealed an inconsistency regarding the policies and procedures, arrangement and filing records and access and retrieval due to the practice of self-developed procedures in the UoP archival units. Although archives management practices have significant impact on university academic as well as research-related functions, however, there is lack of centralized and standardized practices for archiving records in the UoP. Lack of professional/trained staff and policy document are key limitations in building systematic and standardized archives management system in academic intuitions, particularly in the UoP.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first empirical study in Pakistan that has explored archives management practices used in university archives. It also contributes theoretically and methodologically through the underpinnings of archival principles in association with university functions and developing a validated scale to explore archives management practices in universities. The findings of this study may be helpful for the concerned bodies, university administrations and archives managers to establish, manage and improve the academic archives systematically.
