Abstract

Purpose

Port performance and port choice have been treated as separate streams of research. This hampers the efforts of ports to anticipate on and respond to possible future changes in port choice by shippers, freight forwarders and carriers. The purpose of this paper is to develop and demonstrate a port performance measurement methodology, extended from the perspective of port choice, which includes hinterland performance and a weighting of attributes from a port choice perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

A review of literature is used to extend the scope of port performance indicators. Multi-criteria decision analysis is used to operationalize the context of port choice, presenting a weighted approach using the Best-Worst Method (BWM). An empirical model is built based on an extensive port stakeholder survey.

Findings

Transport costs and times along the transport chain are the dominant factors for port competitiveness. Satisfaction, reputation and flexibility criteria are the other important decision criteria. The results also show how the availability of different modal alternatives impact on the position of a port. A ranking of routes for hinterland regions is done.

Originality/value

The paper focuses on two extensions of port performance measurement. So far, not all factors that determine port choice have been included in port performance studies. Here, first, factors related to hinterland services are included. Second, a weighting of port performance measures is proposed. The importance of factors is assessed using BWM. The approach is demonstrated empirically for a case of the European contestable hinterland regions, which so far have lacked quantitative analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on answering the following research question: “How efficient are deep-sea ports in the Hamburg-Le Havre (HLH) range compared with each other?”

Design/methodology/approach

Input-oriented (and output-oriented) Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) results demonstrate that the deep-sea port of Vlissingen is perfectly efficient and also that the port of Amsterdam is quite efficient. These DEA results are underligned by the single-point benchmarking results.

Findings

The Dutch deep-sea ports are the most efficient ports in the HLH range. Finally, relatively smaller deep-sea ports (with a market share of about 5 percent, such as Amsterdam, Vlissingen, and Zeebrugge) are relatively more efficient than larger deep-sea container ports (such as Antwerp, Hamburg, and Rotterdam). It can be observed that especially in these larger ports, the container sector is (very) important as compared with the smaller ports. Furthermore, Dutch ports are relatively more efficient and receive the lowest subsidies, suggesting efficiency improvement opportunities for the Belgium, German, and French ports.

Originality/value

The originality of the paper is in its focus on all deep-sea ports in the HLH range (and not on container ports only) and in the combination of methods (DEA and single-point benchmarking).

Abstract

The significance of feminisms appears and disappears from where you stand. In the 20th century, feminisms of different contexts have been the very basis of struggles for equity and justice at the same as time as they have faced charges of illegitimacy or irrelevance. As in the last century, the current era can be read not as the histories of feminisms only but as chronicles of feminisms intertwined unevenly with other movements for social, political, and economic justice. In this sense, feminisms have disappeared or metamorphosed.1 Both verbs signify either that many feminisms are not recognizable as some had known or interpreted them to exist, or that they have altered beyond familiar shapes to forms that have displaced or substituted them. These transformations have led to debates on purist and reconstituted versions; these disputes have, in fact, maintained the vitality of feminisms.2

Abstract

Purpose

Agricultural sector not only meets the nutritional requirements of all living creatures but also generates the primary source of the raw material provided by various branches of industry to fulfill their functions. It is of great importance to increase studies on oilseeds which have an important role in Turkey's agricultural products. They are grown in almost all of the country, which are vital for the nutrition and many sectors. The main purpose of the study is to offer an integrated approach to determine potential warehouse locations for oilseeds.

Design/methodology/approach

This is the first study that integrates Delphi, analytical hierarchical process (AHP), technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), P-Median and Panel data analysis in a real case. This integrated approach consists of the following steps, respectively: (1) The criteria were determined by the Delphi method. (2) The weights of the criteria were calculated by AHP and the provinces with the highest oilseed warehouse potential in seven regions of Turkey were specified by TOPSIS. (3) Oilseed warehouse numbers and locations were obtained by P-Median. (4) In order to answer whether the distribution network is profitable in the future with the determined center locations, a forecast model based on panel data analysis was created. (5) Regional representatives were determined for 2030, and the distribution network was analyzed again. (6) The costs that arose in 2018 and 2030 were computed and compared by cost analysis. (7) The effect of the change in criteria weights on the alternative results was tested by scenario analysis.

Findings

The findings indicated that oilseed crop production potential and oilseed crop production area turned out to be the most important criteria. Furthermore, the results showed that this model is robust and suitable for warehouse location selection studies.

Practical implications

The study can serve as a guide for local and central policy makers with both the criteria it uses and the model it develops.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this study is that the integrated approach has been used for the first time in location selection in a real case.
