Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the letters to shareholders of Nike, Inc. and Reebok over the period 1990‐1999. Using narrative analysis, the purpose of this paper is to show how strategic intent of these two companies is revealed through their letters to shareholders.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative narrative analysis incorporating literary genres and strategic narratives and applying them to strategic schools of thought.

Findings

Nike uses many narrative styles, suggesting they view events in a variety of ways in their sensemaking. Reebok, on the other hand, used a limited number of narrative styles, suggesting a limited view or interpretation of events.

Research limitations/implications

Future research could include additional documents of the companies, both public and private.

Practical implications

This analysis shows that companies can successfully use polyplotted and flexible narrative styles, whereas the old school of strategy suggested a single, unwavering course.

Originality/value

The contribution of this paper is the use of organizational narrative as epistemology within the study of strategic management.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores factors that influence the initiation of leadership coaching relationships that include externally employed coaches and school administrators.

Design/methodology/approach

This qualitative research study includes semi-structured interviews, observations and documents collected across three academic years within the context of a university-based leadership coaching program. Participants included six leadership coaches and six school administrators who participated in the program.

Findings

Qualitative analysis indicates that gender and race, prior professional experience, pre-existing professional relationships and the complexity of the district’s organizational structure influence the initiation of the coaching relationship.

Research limitations/implications

Confidentiality restrictions imposed by the program limit opportunities for member checking and other forms of triangulation. Additional data collection using more expansive research methods would help address this limitation.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the sparse literature about leadership coaching with school administrators by describing how different factors influence initiation coaching relationships.

Abstract

This chapter aims to investigate sentiments of blue-collar workers, specifically couriers, during Covid-19 pandemic. Data are collected from the online review posting platform, where employees and previous employees of a Turkish delivery company posted their comments on the company as an employer. The results reveal that there are mainly four topics on which the reviewers discuss: work environment, compensation, salary and working hours, and lay-off procedures. The analyses indicate that the most discussed topic is compensation, while the most negative sentiments appear to be on lay-off procedures.

Abstract

The main purpose of the study is to examine the intellectual structure of academic studies on blue-collar workers. In this context, (1) productivity and evolution of the field, (2) conceptual dimensions, (3) citation density and (4) structure of academic networks related to blue-collar workers were analyzed. The findings of the study produced results covering all fields of science, not just management and organization. As a result of the study, blue-collar studies by years, the most cited blue-collar studies, the researchers who published the most frequently about blue-collar workers, the researchers who conducted the longest research on blue-collar workers, the most frequently used keywords and academic networks in blue-collar studies are determined. The most important finding is that the blue-collar issue is the common intersection point of different fields of science such as health, medicine, finance, management and organization, marketing, psychology and sociology.
