Abstract
Reviews NHS policy for the introduction of new technology and drug developments into the NHS with reference to HIV therapy. Also reviews current policy issues related to NHS rationing and priority setting with reference to commissioning services for HIV infection and AIDS. Confirms the destabilisation of HIV contracts in the North East of England caused by the introduction of double therapy in 1996 and triple therapy in 1997 in relation to the above policy areas. Also reviews purchaser and provider contracting following the introduction of triple therapy for HIV infection. Finally, concludes by reviewing local policy and management arrangements and recommendations for change.

Abstract
In examining the effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spillage on corporate social reporting (CSR) in the annual reports of oil companies, Patten suggested examining companies in other industries and their response to social (e.g. environmental) threats. This paper examines environmental and social reporting in five companies representing three FTSE sectors, selected according to an intuitive understanding of society’s perceptions of their depth of “sin” or supposed unethical behaviour. Social disclosure data were captured from annual corporate reports between 1975 and 1997. Results suggest that legitimacy theory may be an explanation of disclosure in some cases but not in others. The distorting effects of perception (of legitimacy‐threatening factors) and the increase in choices of disclosure media partly explain the mixed results and these factors and it is suggested, challenge the usefulness of future “annual‐report only” studies.

Abstract
Explores the extent to, and ways in which, doctors are prepared for their future role in management through the undergraduate medical curriculum. Surveys the colleges across the UK offering undergraduate medical education using both prospectuses and questionnaires to establish both inclusion of healthcare management/policy in curricula and the subject content offered. Establishes that the majority of colleges offer some teaching of health care management/policy although the areas of study included vary considerably. The emphasis in most institutions appears to be on introducing the structure and organization of the NHS together with decision making in respect of resource allocation often located within a public health programme. This leads to the tentative conclusion that the management education needs of future public health physicians are reasonably well served while those of hospital doctors and general practitioners need further investigation.

Assuming that the relations between the Local Authority and their Public Analyst are, as regards fixity of tenure, established on a satisfactory basis, there remain some very important points to be discussed, namely, the duties of that officer, the conditions under which he works, and his relations to his colleagues on the staff. These are matters which, so far as we know, have never previously been dealt with in print, are only partially regulated by law, and are not settled by any uniformity of practice on the part of Local Authorities.

Abstract
Purpose
The main objective of this paper is to compare consumers' online shopping behavior across three types of services (i.e. search, experience, and credence). Reviewing the marketing and psychology literatures, this study aims to propose that consumers' emotions (pleasure, arousal, and dominance) influence their perception of site atmospheric cues (site informativeness, effectiveness, and entertainment), which, in turn, impact consumers' site attitudes, site involvement, and purchase intention. It also aims to test the proposed model for three major types of services (i.e. search, experience, and credence) and to compare the path coefficients of all the relationships in the model across the three groups.
Design/methodology/approach
Lab experiments were conducted for data collection and structural equation modeling was utilized for multi‐group analysis.
Findings
The results supported the proposed model and revealed several non‐invariant structural paths across the three groups.
Research limitations/implications
The student sample may not represent the general population.
Practical implications
Search‐, experience‐, and credence‐based services should attempt to evoke the most desired consumer emotional types (pleasure, arousal, and dominance).
Originality/value
Unlike many other studies in services marketing, this paper tests the proposed model across different service types to increase the generalizability of the results.
