Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to automatically derive a 2D parametric model of the main characteristic lines of a car from images, blueprints or hand-made sketches of its side view. Then this model can be used for the further computer-aided design manipulation starting from images of the side view of a car.
Design/methodology/approach
The method combines different image edge detection techniques and edge removal processes with optimization techniques according to local and global constraints specific of the single curves to automatically construct a precise parametric model of the main character lines of a car from images. First, process the car image to compute the most important curves and then warp a car template model to match its feature points and curves with the ones detected in the image.
Findings
The paper provides method to construct parametric model from an image using maximum cover ratio to the edge points obtained by state-of-the-art edge detection algorithms. A feature points’ organization mechanism produces quadric curves to express feature curves of a product.
Research limitations/implications
The robustness of the presented method depends on the completeness of edge detection results and the accuracy of some key points’ registration result, so if the image is not good, the result cannot be trusted. Only side-view is considered in this paper. Additional limits in the process regard the side view verification: pictures of the front or rear view can be wrongly classified as lateral ones when they contain round lights.
Practical implications
This program enables designers to convert the image to geometric parametric model directly.
Originality/value
The method is applicable to shaded pictures, sketches and blue prints of the side view of a car. It can process a database of car images in a batch mode or a specific picture on user demand. The method classifies the cars to different categories: SUV/Wagon/Hatchback, sedan, city and coupe. The authors obtain good results for every category.

Abstract
Purpose
The strength of printed parts by application of fused deposition modeling (FDM) has been broadly studied through experimental methods. However, constitutive behaviors of the printed parts in theory are still unclear. Therefore, this paper aims to focus on building an elasto-plastic model of the printed parts to reveal the constitutive behavior.
Design/methodology/approach
An elasto-plastic constitutive model that considers anisotropic characteristics is proposed. Tensile tests are performed for parameter identification by using different samples with varying printing angles. Finally, the constitutive model is completed and applied to the numerical analysis of a tensile procedure.
Findings
The experimental study indicated that the anisotropic characteristics are significant for elastic modulus and strength of printed parts. The polar anisotropic model is suitable for describing the anisotropic behavior of parts during the elastic deformation. The Hill model is suitable to describe the yield property. The elastic modulus and yield point of parts printed in any specific orientation can be calculated using the proposed constitutive model.
Originality/value
A theoretical model has been developed to describe the constitutive behavior of FDM printed part. This model can precisely describe the elastic behavior and yield point of parts printed with various orientations. This model can be applied to the finite element simulation of printed structures.

Abstract
Purpose
Due to existence of skin effect under rotational excitation, especially to high-frequency motors and power transformers run at the frequency of hundreds or even thousands of hertz, core losses will increase significantly, which may cause local overheating damage, and the efficiency and longevity will be decreased. The purpose of this paper is to accurately calculate the rotational anomalous loss in electrical steel sheets.
Design/methodology/approach
The influence of skin effect to rotational anomalous loss coefficient is described in detail. Based on the rotational core losses calculation approach, the transformed coefficient and parameters of rotational anomalous loss are determined in accordance with experimental data obtained by using 3D magnetic properties testing system. Then, a variable loss coefficient calculation model of rotational anomalous loss is built. Meanwhile, a separation of the total 2D elliptical rotation experimental core losses is worked out.
Findings
The two methods are analysed and compared qualitatively. It should be noted that the novel calculation model can be more effectively presented anomalous loss features. Moreover, quantitative comparisons between 2D elliptical rotation and alternating core losses have achieved beneficial conclusions.
Originality/value
Transformed rotational anomalous loss coefficient and parameters of electrical steel sheets considering skin effect are determined. Based on that, a novel calculation model evaluating 2D elliptical rotation anomalous loss is presented and verified based on the experimental measurement and the separation of the total 2D elliptical rotation core losses. The 2D elliptical rotation core losses separation method and quantitative comparison with alternating excitation are helpful to engineering application.

Abstract
Purpose
Discovering the research topics and trends from a large quantity of library electronic references is essential for scientific research. Current research of this kind mainly depends on human justification. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how to identify research topics and evolution in trends from library electronic references efficiently and effectively by employing automatic text analysis algorithms.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors used the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), a probabilistic generative topic model to extract the latent topic from the large quantity of research abstracts. Then, the authors conducted a regression analysis on the document-topic distributions generated by LDA to identify hot and cold topics.
Findings
First, this paper discovers 32 significant research topics from the abstracts of 3,737 articles published in the six top accounting journals during the period of 1992-2014. Second, based on the document-topic distributions generated by LDA, the authors identified seven hot topics and six cold topics from the 32 topics.
Originality/value
The topics discovered by LDA are highly consistent with the topics identified by human experts, indicating the validity and effectiveness of the methodology. Therefore, this paper provides novel knowledge to the accounting literature and demonstrates a methodology and process for topic discovery with lower cost and higher efficiency than the current methods.

This paper aims to investigate the lubrication characteristics of siliconized graphite with a wavy-tilt-dam (WTD) pattern applied to the hydrodynamic face seals.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the lubrication characteristics of siliconized graphite with a wavy-tilt-dam (WTD) pattern applied to the hydrodynamic face seals.
Design/methodology/approach
It focuses on two friction pairs, carbon graphite versus tungsten carbide (CG-TC) and siliconized graphite versus siliconized graphite (SG-SG), through a three-dimensional elastic hydrodynamic lubrication numerical model that integrates finite difference method and finite element method. The consequence of axial elastic deformation of sealing pair materials on film thickness, film pressure, cavitation and sealing performance for a WTD mechanical face seal under full working conditions of ΔP = 0.8, 5.3 and 15.8 MPa are analyzed theoretically.
Findings
The nuclear hydrodynamic WTD face seal generates a convergent gap and exhibits a dual-characteristic behavior of hydrodynamic and hydrostatic effects under various ΔP. Compared to the CG-TC, the SG-SG shows a lower minimum film thickness, decreasing by 3.9%, 17.3% and 35.1%. The flow leakage rate decreases by 47.8%, 52.1% and 75.4%. In addition, the film stiffness increases by 46.8%, 49.8% and 97.8%. Thus, the SG-SG better deals with the dynamic tracking problem, and the sealing performance is stable. The strength and hardness of siliconized graphite enhance WTD sealing performance and improve cavitation control in high-pressure applications.
Originality/value
The lubrication characteristics of the siliconized graphite with a WTD pattern could inform the future design of hydrodynamic shallow groove wavy seals in boiler feedwater engineering implements under high-pressure conditions for the nuclear power industry.
