Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an algorithm based on genetic algorithm (GA) to solve the block erection scheduling problem in shipbuilding.

Design/methodology/approach

The block erection scheduling problem is defined as the identical parallel machine‐scheduling problem with precedence constraints and machine eligibility (PCME) restrictions. A GA is proposed to find near optimal solution, and a few lower bounds and the percentage of the reduced makespan are defined to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. Finally, the GA for block erection scheduling problem in a shipyard is illustrated by using the real data from a local shipyard.

Findings

The proposed GA produces lesser values of makespan against the random heuristic algorithm for the collected real instances.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed GA can solve other similar parallel machine‐scheduling problems with PCME to minimize makespan.

Practical implications

Based on the proposed GA, the developed scheduling system for block erection in a shipyard can reduce the makespan of block erection, and contribute to the productivity improvement.

Originality/value

The allocation of block erection to the crane is modeled as a parallel machine‐scheduling problem with PCME, and the GA is developed to solve this problem to minimize makespan.

Abstract

Purpose

Previous research has generally assumed that a homogeneous cultural value exists within a given country. This research aims to identify the regional differences in cultural value based on an urbanization dimension in China, which generate diversity with regard to perceived value and consumer decision‐making styles.

Design/methodology/approach

A large‐scale questionnaire was administered to freshmen from major colleges and universities across China to measure cultural value, perceived value, and consumer decision‐making style. The data were analyzed with a multi‐group structural equation model and a stepwise discrimination test.

Findings

Results demonstrated significant differences in cultural value, perceived value and consumer decision‐making style among regions with different degrees of urbanization and revealed antecedents and formation of the mechanism of decision‐making style.

Research limitations/implications

Future research should explore more antecedents that influence consumer decision‐making styles and other market dimensions other than urbanization.

Practical implications

The research might provide prominent guidelines for marketers to understand Chinese consumers. Specifically, in regions with different degrees of urbanization, marketers should develop differential strategies to exploit the market given the distinctions in cultural value, perceived value and consumer decision‐making styles.

Originality/value

This study is the first to build a theoretical relational model of cultural value, perceived value and consumer decision‐making styles. And this model revealed the antecedents and formation of the mechanism of decision‐making style.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a method for generating a set of feasible, optimized production schedules for the erection process of compact shipyards building complex ship types.

Design/methodology/approach

A bi-objective mathematical model is developed based on the process constraints. A Pareto front of possible erection schedules is created using a the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II with a custom heuristic fitness function and constraint violation.

Findings

It was possible to consistently generate a wide variety of production schedules with superior performance to those manually created by shipyard planner in negligible computational time.

Practical implications

The set of optimized production schedules generated by the developed methodology can be used as a starting point by existing shipyard planners when drafting the initial erection planning for a new project. This allows the planners to consider wider variety of options in less time.

Originality/value

No other published approach for the automatic generation of optimized production schedules of the erection process is specifically tailored to the construction of complex ships.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of fullerene (FNS) reinforcements on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 96.5Sn3Ag0.5Cu (SAC305) lead-free solder joints under isothermal ageing and electrical-migration (EM) stressing.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, SAC305 solder alloy doped with 0.1 Wt.% FNS was prepared via the powder metallurgy method. A sandwich-like sample and a U-shaped sample were designed and prepared to conduct an isothermal ageing test and an EM test. The isothermal ageing test was implemented under vacuum atmosphere at 150°C, whereas the EM experiment was carried out with a current density of 1.5 × 104 A/cm2. The microstructural and mechanical evolutions of both plain and composite solder joints after thermal ageing and EM stressing were comparatively studied.

Findings

A growth of Ag3Sn intermetallic compounds (IMCs) in solder matrix and Cu-Sn interfacial IMCs in composite solder joints was notably suppressed under isothermal ageing condition, whereas the hardness and shear strength of composite solder joints significantly outperformed those of non-reinforced solder joints throughout the ageing period. The EM experimental results showed that for the SAC305 solder, the interfacial IMCs formulated a protrusion at the anode after 360 h of EM stressing, whereas the surface of the composite solder joint was relatively smooth. During the stressing period, the interfacial IMC on the anode side of the plain SAC305 solder showed a continuous increasing trend, whereas the IMC at the cathode presented a decreasing trend for its thickness as the stressing time increased; after 360 h of stressing, some cracks and voids had formed on the cathode side. For the SAC305/FNS composite solder, a continuous increase in the thickness of the interfacial IMC was found on both the anode and cathode sides; the growth rate of the interfacial IMC at the anode was higher than that at the cathode. The nanoindentation results showed that the hardness of the SAC305 solder joint presented a gradient distribution after EM stressing, whereas the hardness data showed a relatively homogeneous distribution in the SAC305/FNS solder joint.

Originality/value

The experimental results showed that the FNS reinforcement could effectively mitigate the failure risk in solder joints under isothermal ageing and high-current stressing. Specifically, the FNS particles in solder joints can work as a barrier to suppress the diffusion and migration of Sn and Cu atoms. In addition, the nanoidentation results also indicated that the addition of the FNS reinforcement was very helpful in maintaining the mechanical stability of the solder joint. These findings have provided a theoretical and experimental basis for the practical application of this novel composite solder with high-current densities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to compare the prediction models for half-cell potential (HCP) of RCC slabs cathodically protected using pure magnesium anodes and subjected to chloride ingress.The models for HCP using 1,134 data set values based on experimentation are developed and compared using ANFIS, artificial neural network (ANN) and integrated ANN-GA algorithms.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, RCC slabs, 1000 mm × 1000 mm × 100 mm were cast. Five slabs were cast with 3.5% NaCl by weight of cement, and five more were cast without NaCl. The distance of the point under consideration from the anode in the x- and y-axes, temperature, relative humidity and age of the slab in days were the input parameters, while the HCP values with reference to the Standard Calomel Electrode were the output. Experimental values consisting of 80 HCP values per slab per day were collected for 270 days and were averaged for both cases to generate the prediction model.

Findings

In this study, the premise and consequent parameters are trained, validated and tested using ANFIS, ANN and by using ANN as fitness function of GA. The MAPE, RMSE and MAE of the ANFIS model were 24.57, 1702.601 and 871.762, respectively. Amongst the ANN algorithms, Levenberg−Marquardt (LM) algorithm outperforms the other methods, with an overall R-value of 0.983. GA with ANN as the objective function proves to be the best means for the development of prediction model.

Originality/value

Based on the original experimental values, the performance of ANFIS, ANN and GA with ANN as objective function provides excellent results.

Abstract

Purpose

Fixed mode noise and random mode noise always exist in the image sensor, which affects the imaging quality of the image sensor. The charge diffusion and color mixing between pixels in the photoelectric conversion process belong to fixed mode noise. This study aims to improve the image sensor imaging quality by processing the fixed mode noise.

Design/methodology/approach

Through an iterative training of an ergoable long- and short-term memory recurrent neural network model, the authors obtain a neural network model able to compensate for image noise crosstalk. To overcome the lack of differences in the same color pixels on each template of the image sensor under flat-field light, the data before and after compensation were used as a new data set to further train the neural network iteratively.

Findings

The comparison of the images compensated by the two sets of neural network models shows that the gray value distribution is more concentrated and uniform. The middle and high frequency components in the spatial spectrum are all increased, indicating that the compensated image edges change faster and are more detailed (Hinton and Salakhutdinov, 2006; LeCun et al., 1998; Mohanty et al., 2016; Zang et al., 2023).

Originality/value

In this paper, the authors use the iterative learning color image pixel crosstalk compensation method to effectively alleviate the incomplete color mixing problem caused by the insufficient filter rate and the electric crosstalk problem caused by the lateral diffusion of the optical charge caused by the adjacent pixel potential trap.

Abstract

Purpose

To study these issues, the authors chose a GFSC with one producer and one material supplier as research object, the supplier will offer green material to the producer and the producer will make green food using green production technology. Then, the authors proposed that consumers' perceived value was determined by the trustworthiness levels of the related green and quality-safety information provided by the supplier and the producer. Then, considering the trustworthiness levels of the green and quality information provided by the supplier and the producer, the authors improved the demand function. Afterwards, we constructed four investment models and their income models are built and then a cost-sharing and revenue-sharing contract (hereafter, CSRS) was adopted to coordinate the GFSC.

Design/methodology/approach

With the growth of consumers environmental awareness and life level, consumers' requirements for green and high quality food are growing. In recently years, to increase consumers' perceived trustworthiness on the product greenness and quality levels, stakeholders in green food supply chain (hereafter, GFSC) start to adopt the blockchain-based traceability system (hereafter, BLTS). For investors, they need to know the investment conditions and how to coordinate the GFSC.

Findings

(1) When the revenue-sharing coefficient is less than three-fourths and higher then a certain vaule, the cost-sharing and revenue-sharing contract can make the GFSC coordinate. (2) The investment cost threshold of the BLTS has a positive relationship with the trustworthiness improvement levels of the green and quality information, the green degree of food products and the quality of food products. (3) In the proposed four investment situations, as the growth of consumers perceived credibility coefficient about the greenness information and the quality information, chain members' revenues will increase. In addition, comparing with co-investing the BLTS, benefits of chain members are lower than them in the sole investment model.

Originality/value

(1) The demand function we proposed can help chain members forecast market demand to support production or ordering decisions. (2) The investment decision policies can offer a theoretical reference for chain members to use the BLTS. (3) The CSRS will offer the theoretical reference for coordinating the supply chain after using the BLTS. Furthermore, our study method can be referenced by other scholars. (4) The study method can offer a method reference for researchers who do a similar discussion in a manufacturing supply chain. Although, our research cannot guide the industrial practices, it can serve as a reference of the similar research in industry.
