Abstract
The evolutionary process leading to a computerized search facility for giving a current awareness service from a number of magnetic tape services is described. The background for the initiation of the service was a general consensus articulated in a NORDFORSK survey of the reading habits of Scandinavian scientists and engineers, that the individual had the feeling of being flooded with literature. Thus, there was an urgent need for a fast and selective documentation service. One solution to this problem has been to construct and start up a SDI‐service. In order to solve the individual's need for a comprehensive service a variety of data bases are utilized. His interest profile can be up‐dated at any time. The service must handle the bulk of information within a reasonable budget. As a result of the introduction of the SDI‐service thousands of subscribers both in universities and in industry receive printouts relating to their personal interest profiles. Though the service has proved to be a valuable tool both in fundamental research for development work and for current awareness in many fields, the burden put on the libraries for providing photocopies has proved to be a severe obstacle for further development of the service.

Abstract
While working in a rural district library system, the question of planning library/information services to meet the needs of the population was always of foremost importance. Community profiles of the region had been conducted continuously for ten years, and during the eleventh year it was decided to survey the entire area in a methodical way to search for the information needs of the population. The purpose of the study was to identify information needs in a specific rural area in Israel in order to design a plan for library/information provision to meet those needs. The study consisted of a literature search of relevant material on information needs in rural areas and less developed countries and a multi‐level field survey in one specific rural area of Israel.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present how experiences gained from a theory-informed lesson study – learning study (LrS) – in regard to a specific learning goal can be shared and used by other teachers in new contexts.
Design/methodology/approach
A group of teachers worked together in a cyclic, iterative process of planning, evaluating and revising teaching. The aim was to provide possibilities for grade 2 and 3 students to become familiar with negative numbers. The teacher group came to the conclusion that the students needed to be able to differentiate some aspects of negative numbers. The conjecture was put to the test in a follow-up study (FS) with five new teachers and eight classes. One lesson was taught based on the empirical findings in the LrS.
Findings
The results suggest that teachers’ collaborative work has possibilities to produce knowledge about critical aspects of learning that can be communicated and adopted in new contexts. The teachers in the FS were able to make sense of the results from LrS and incorporate the critical aspects in their teaching in a way that enhanced students’ learning.
Originality/value
It is demonstrated that teacher collaboration in LrS can create knowledge that goes beyond the border of the local context.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study public project governance frameworks in various ministries and agencies in Norway, following the introduction of such a framework on the topmost level (i.e. the cabinet) which applies to the very largest projects.
Design/methodology/approach
The study is methodologically designed as a qualitative assessment of project governance frameworks that apply to state-funded investment projects in selected sectors, based on data gathered through document reviews and interviews.
Findings
The study finds that all of the agencies have introduced their own project governance frameworks, which are basically consistent with the recommendations from the project management literature and with the cabinet’s overall requirements in Norway. By contrast, only one ministry has taken a formalized role as a project owner. Governance tasks thus seem to be extensively delegated to the subordinate agencies. This even includes strategic tasks such as project selection and portfolio management, and implies there is a risk that public project governance has a narrow and internal focus.
Originality/value
The paper is a first step toward a better understanding of public project governance as a hierarchical system and the relationship between project owners on three levels, the cabinet, the sectoral ministry, and the government agency.
