THE Deutsche Luftfahrtschau, popularly known as the Hanover Air Show, is held biennially by the Bundesverband der Deutschen Luft‐ und Raumfahrtindustrie e.V. (the German Aerospace Industries Association) and will take place from April 24 to May 3 at Langenhagen Airport, Hanover. As in previous years, it will run concurrently with the famous Hanover Trade Fair.

Late in 2001, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) introduced a new set of arrangements for deposit protection in the UK. While the changes involve a welcome improvement on previous arrangements, much more could be done to enhance their overall cost‐effectiveness. This paper explains the flaws in previous and current arrangements and, using a relatively crude but nevertheless objective measure of the extent of their compliance with International Monetary Fund (IMF) best practice ‘rules’, compares their degree of ‘incentive‐compatibility’ (or economic efficiency ‐ ie the extent to which they minimise the problems created by adverse selection, moral hazard and principal/agency conflict) with the counterpart schemes operating elsewhere in the European Union and beyond. In this way, areas for future improvements are identified, which will ideally require accommodating changes in the guiding Deposit Guarantee Schemes Directive.

This year's Show will be held from April 29 to May 8 at the Hanover Langenhagen Airport and will be held at the same time as the Hanover Fair.

One common feature of different variants of participatory and action research is rejection of technocratic, undemocratic elements in science and inquiry, aiming to break the dominance of traditional academic views of science. These variants open up broader participation of people, and emancipate knowledge creation for the production of actionable knowledge with transformative potentials. The purpose of this chapter is to recognize and clarify a striving for knowledge democracy in these explicit or implicit democratizing ambitions and tendencies in the sense of broadening the participation of concerned parties in research and development work on open and equal terms. This recent concept, still in the process of formulation, has been proposed as a global mobilizing and unifying thinking for distributed networks and movements for participatory oriented research. The concept and movement had an initial embedding in the First Global Assembly for Knowledge Democracy in June 2017, Cartagena, Columbia. The purpose of the chapter is to elaborate on the meaning of knowledge democracy as a vision for the participatory and action research community. Particularly I will distinguish between different orientation to knowledge democracy, and the character of the logic of a more, open, democratic and coproductive science that can be a carrier of it.

During 1993 Member States of the European Union formally adopted two Directives—the Investment Services Directive and the Capital Adequacy Directive—concerned with the operation of investment business. This paper outlines the provisions contained in these Directives, which have to be enshrined in national law by the end of 1995 at the latest, explaining the role they play within the broader Single Market programme for financial services. A simple ‘cost‐benefit’ analysis of their likely impact, mainly on UK intermediaries, is also provided.

This paper is published in two parts. The first, which is published here, starts by considering the background to UK banking supervision and examining the effectiveness of the Bank of England and BCCI's auditors in the supervision of BCCI. The author then assesses the suitability of the Banking Act 19.87 following which is a list of recommended reform measures. The first part of the paper concludes with a consideration of banking supervision in Luxembourg. Part two of the paper examines deficiencies in the international supervision of banking and will be published in the next issue of The International Journal of Regulatory Law and Practice, Volume 1 Number 3.

Looks at the 2000 Employment Research Unit Annual Conference held at the University of Cardiff in Wales on 6/7 September 2000. Spotlights the 76 or so presentations within and shows that these are in many, differing, areas across management research from: retail finance; precarious jobs and decisions; methodological lessons from feminism; call centre experience and disability discrimination. These and all points east and west are covered and laid out in a simple, abstract style, including, where applicable, references, endnotes and bibliography in an easy‐to‐follow manner. Summarizes each paper and also gives conclusions where needed, in a comfortable modern format.

Despite significant changes to the governing institutional framework and to operational procedures, a number of serious doubts remain concerning the cost‐effectiveness of banking regulation and supervision in Japan. This paper duly highlights these lingering doubts focusing, in particular, on failure resolution policy and the authorities’ handling of the banks’ bad debt problems. The paper concludes by making suggestions as to how the Japanese authorities might improve the situation, to the mutual benefit of Japan and the world economy.
