Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the relationship between proactive socialization behaviors (PSBs) and work engagement, with a specific focus on the mediating role of social capital resources (SCRs). Additionally, it investigates how proactive personality and perceived organizational support (POS) moderate the organizational assimilation of newcomers in Punjab, Pakistan, through the lens of self-determination theory.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional survey design was employed, with data collected from diverse organizations across cities in Punjab, Pakistan, including Bhimber, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Lahore, Jhelum, Kharian, Kotla, Mandi Bahauddin, and Sialkot. A total of 1,000 questionnaires were distributed, resulting in 619 valid responses. The sample primarily consisted of individuals with varying levels of work experience, contributing to the diversity of the data. SEM was utilized to analyze the relationships between the studied variables.

Findings

Results indicated a significant positive association between PSBs and work engagement among newcomers. SCRs were found to mediate this relationship, suggesting that proactive behaviors help newcomers accumulate social capital, which enhances work engagement. Moreover, the study reveals that proactive personality and POS significantly moderate the relationship between PSBs and work engagement, with stronger positive associations observed among proactive individuals and those perceiving higher organizational support.

Practical implications

The study underscores the importance of encouraging proactive socialization behaviors and strengthening organizational support systems to foster newcomer engagement and facilitate successful assimilation.

Social implications

Understanding these dynamics can lead to the creation of more inclusive and supportive organizational environments, enhancing both individual well-being and organizational effectiveness.

Originality/value

This research offers new insights into the mechanisms through which PSBs impact work engagement, particularly through the accumulation of SCRs, and highlights the importance of proactive personality and organizational support as moderators.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate how social capital resources (SCRs), proactive personality and perceived organizational support (POS) influence work engagement during the organizational socialization process through the lens of self-determination theory (SDT).

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing upon a sample of newly hired employees from diverse industries, data was collected using self-report measures. A total of 619 respondents’ data were qualified for analysis. Regression analysis and structural equation modeling with the bootstrap method were used for hypothesis testing.

Findings

Results indicate that newcomers who used effective organizational socialization tactics (OSTs) experienced higher levels of work engagement. Moreover, SCRs were crucial in shaping the relationship between OSTs and work engagement. Specifically, newcomers with greater SCRs exhibited increased work engagement, enhancing effective OSTs’ positive impact. Furthermore, proactive personality and POS traits moderate the relationship between SCRs and work engagement. Newcomers with a proactive personality were more likely to leverage their SCRs, leading to higher work engagement effectively.

Practical implications

This study underscores the importance of promoting social connections, organizational support, proactivity and positive relationships to enhance employee work engagement and overall well-being in the Pakistani context.

Originality/value

This study examines how SCRs, proactive personality and POS influence work engagement during organizational socialization, a novel area in newcomer adjustment. It highlights the importance of strategic socialization and targeted onboarding programs that enhance SCRs and proactive personalities. By integrating SDT with the cultural context of Pakistani organizations, it offers unique insights for improving newcomer adjustment and engagement.

The Phenomenological and Framework Synthesis approach is used to develop the conceptual framework for organizational consciousness.

The research article highlights organizational consciousness's implications for long-term sustainable success. It emphasizes the positive impact of conscious organizations on stakeholder well-being and the resolution of environmental and social problems.

Originality/value

The organizational consciousness framework encompasses the collective awareness, values, and purpose that guide an organization's actions and decisions. Abstract

Purpose

In today's dynamic and competitive business environment, organizations strive to foster innovation as a key driver of success. To achieve this, leaders play a critical role in promoting innovative work behavior among employees. This study is based on finding the effect of ambidextrous leadership on innovative work behavior with employee voice behavior as a mediator and employee moral identity as a moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is conducted on Pakistan's hotel and restaurant industry. Drawing upon a sample of 410 valid responses from employees from various hotels, data is collected using self-report questionnaires.

Findings

The study revealed that ambidextrous leadership is positively related to innovative work behavior, and employee voice behavior mediated their relationship very well. However, ambidextrous leadership generates more positive and creative outcomes for the organization if it accompanies employee voice. Moreover, employees with a stronger moral identity are more likely to engage in voice behavior when they perceive ambidextrous leadership practices.

Practical implications

In Pakistan's hotel industry, developing leadership programs that focus on ambidextrous leadership, encouraging employee voice, and aligning with employees' moral values are key to fostering innovation. Organizations should cultivate a culture of openness, trust, and recognition, alongside implementing systems that reward innovative contributions. It's crucial to provide opportunities for skill development, decision-making participation, and a sense of ownership among employees. Moreover, providing necessary resources and supporting a culture that embraces experimentation and learning from failures are fundamental for sustained innovation.

Originality/value

By adopting ambidextrous leadership practices, leaders can stimulate employee voice behavior, which, in turn, contributes to the development of innovative work behavior. Furthermore, understanding the importance of employee moral identity can help leaders tailor their leadership approaches to create an ethical work environment that promotes employee engagement and innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the influence of collaborative stakeholder relationships (buyers, media, government and top management) on apparel suppliers’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Bangladesh.

Design/methodology/approach

“Face to face” and “drop off and collect” survey administration techniques were used to collect a total of 371 questionnaires from middle-level managerial executives of apparel suppliers in Bangladesh. The data were analysed using partial least square structural equation modelling combined with resampling and bootstrapping techniques.

Findings

The findings suggest that buyers, the media and top management have a direct and significant influence on the stakeholder network and, in turn, positively impact the CSR of apparel suppliers in Bangladesh. The media and buyer firms work together to provide a combined and salient influence on the top management of supplier firms in Bangladesh to shape CSR practices.

Practical implications

The extent of stakeholder influence varies according to the strength of the network and the mediation within interconnected relationships. Suppliers’ top management could use the study’s findings to improve CSR by focussing on the strongest path of interconnected stakeholders. The Bangladesh Government could take policy initiatives to address CSR-related concerns raised by interconnected stakeholders.

Originality/value

This study contributes to stakeholder and CSR literature by providing valuable insights into the empirical justification of interactive stakeholder influences on suppliers’ CSR.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to elucidate the value creation process within a culturally diversified museum (CDM), which aims to achieve social inclusion, i.e. bridging the social divide between mainstream and minority communities, through the integration of CDM’s and visitors’ resources. Using service logic (SL) theory as the theoretical lens, we aim to unveil the CDM’s unique service provider and customer (visitor) resources, the corresponding resource integration process that explains value co-creation and co-destruction and the resultant value outcomes for social inclusion.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study of an Australian CDM is used, involving various qualitative data sources, including depth interviews, focus groups, visitor book content analysis, on-site observation and participation in the CDM’s events and forums.

Findings

The findings provide insights into the unique CDM and visitor resources that are integrated to achieve value outcomes that foster social inclusion. However, the results suggest that alongside value co-creation, co-destruction can unfold, causing a (mis)alignment with the aim of the CDM to bridge the social divide between mainstream and minority communities.

Practical implications

This study’s findings offer salient implications for CDMs and similar service providers that enables social inclusion and policymakers.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the service domain by highlighting the importance of the alignment between provider and customer resources to co-create value within a culturally diversified context. That is, CDMs can learn from the misalignment of their resources and those of their visitors to improve their resource offerings and achieve greater social inclusion outcomes in the future.

Learning outcomes

The case explores Ayesha’s reasoning, who is also a financial expert, regarding how she approaches the question of Riba (interest) so that she can maximize her financial returns and remain true to her religious identity. The discussion in the case revolves around alternate rationalizations as to why Riba (interest) continues to remain important for many Islamic investors.

Case overview/synopsis

Historically, the prohibition of Riba (interest) prevented the exploitation of the poor borrower who was charged exorbitant interest rates by wealthy lenders. In the modern day, a banking system which operates in a regulated setup and charges market-based interest rates, the rationale regarding the exploitation of the poor seems less compelling. Furthermore, other economic realities such as inflation and currency fluctuations further lend support to protecting one’s investments through prudent financial decisions. In this case the authors approach this decision regarding the prohibition of Riba (interest) in Islam from the point of view of the protagonist, Ayesha Bhatti, who is religiously conscious and is faced with certain personal investment choices.

Complexity academic level

The case focuses on one of the core issues of Islamic finance (IF), that of the prohibition of charging Riba (interest) on debt and the reasons behind this ruling. The relevance of this prohibition to modern day financial markets is essential to understand IF.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to systematically review the existing literature on Islamic marketing and its major impacts on consumer behaviours. In addition, this study seeks to shed light on global trends and dynamics beyond Islamic marketing and how Islam, as one of the most prominent religions worldwide, affects the consumption and purchasing choices of Muslim consumers.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review of published peer-reviewed articles on Islamic marketing was conducted. A comprehensive search strategy was applied on different databases, including Google Scholar, JSTOR, ScienceDirect, MUSE and Directory of Open Access Journals, and the retrieved articles were then selected from 14 leading journals published between 2010 and 2018.

Findings

Islam as a religion has been found to impact the ethical beliefs and behaviours of Muslim consumers from different countries, as well as consumers’ choice of services and some taboo products on the basis of Islamic Shariah law. The results show that Islamic marketing has a significant impact on the characteristics of Muslim consumers and therefore affects their key choices about certain products and services.

Research limitations/implications

The studies included in this review are extensively based on peer-reviewed articles published in high-ranked marketing journals (A* and A in the Australian Business Deans Council list), which may be perceived as a limitation in the present study. Another limitation is that this study only took into account peer-reviewed articles written in English.

Practical implications

The important relationship between Islam and the heterogeneous Muslim consumer will have a considerable practical implication for companies that explore the marketing supply capacity in the Islamic world. The authors hereby expect the current review to significantly impact the identification of methodologies for the main trends in the academic analysis of Islamic marketing and Islamic consumer behaviour.

Originality/value

This review provides a strong contribution to Islamic marketing literature by recommending the need to integrate the Islamic practices related to consumer consumption of goods and services in studies focused on consumer behaviour analysis.
