The analysis of the effect of screw angular velocity on the mixing efficiency of open mixing screws.

Abstract

Purpose

The analysis of the effect of screw angular velocity on the mixing efficiency of open mixing screws.

Design/methodology/approach

Measurements and discrete element method based simulations.

Findings

There is an optimal screw rotation angular velocity above which there is no reason to operate the mixing apparatus, as the mixing efficiency does not increase with the increase of screw angular velocity.

Research limitations/implications

By using discrete element method based optimization of open mixing screw apparatus, the effective mixing of agricultural grains can be achieved. The quality degradation of the dried product can be reduced.

Practical implications

The causeless increase of screw angular velocity results higher power consumption and quality degradation because of the increasing value of contact forces arising between the mixed particles.

Originality/value

Our article shows that by using discrete element based simulations, the optimal working parameters of open mixing screws can be evaluated.

Abstract

Purpose

This study has two aims. It aims to analyse three essential pre-conditions of an authentic sustainability curriculum (ASC). The theoretical analysis involves the definition of authenticity through the learning outcomes (LOs) framework called authentic minimum (AM). This paper also aims to gauge students’ views on economic growth, sustainability and mindfulness.

Design/methodology/approach

The theoretical aim was accomplished by extensive study of and critical reflections on the relevant literature. The empirical research was qualitative using an online questionnaire as survey instrument consisting of predominantly open-ended questions involving students of two economic faculties. Directed content analysis and nonparametric quantitative methods were used to assess the answers.

Findings

Viable sustainability goals are in stark contrast with the promotion of sustainable economic growth in sustainable development goals 8 and the reigning neoliberal agenda. The empirical findings provide valuable insights into how undergraduate students view mindfulness, economic growth and aspects of sustainability.

Research limitations/implications

The empirical research has some obvious limitations that warrant caution in generalizing the results. The authors used a sample of convenience and the base population of the survey consisted only in students of economics in two economic faculties of two Hungarian universities.

Practical implications

Practical implications of the present paper are many all sharing; however, the need for existential courage on the part of teachers, students and leaders of higher education institutions. Existential courage is required for profound personal transformation, for going against mainstream ideology and the possible confrontations with colleagues, leaders of institutions, students, friends or family members.

Originality/value

On the theoretical side, the concept of ASC was introduced with AM as its LOs framework. For the first time, an attempt was made to interpret authenticity in sustainability education as an integration of mindfulness, human and environmental ethics and a firm opposition to economic growth and neoliberal ideals. The analysis of qualitative data supported earlier research and also provided unique findings in the examined areas.

Abstract

Purpose

The vacuum vapour phase soldering method was investigated by numerical simulations. The purpose of this study was to examine the temperature changes of the solder joints during the vapour suctioning process. A low pressure is used to enhance the outgassing of the trapped gas within the solder joints, which otherwise could form voids. However, the system loses heat near the suction pipe during the suctioning process, and it can result in preliminary solidification of the solder joints before the gas could escape.

Design/methodology/approach

A three-dimensional numerical flow model based on the Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations with the standard k-e turbulence method was developed. The effect of the vapour suctioning on the convective heat transfer mechanism was described by the model. Temperature change of the solder joints was studied at the mostly used substrate and component combinations, as well as at different system settings.

Findings

In the function of the substrate thickness and the component size, the solder joints can lose large amount of heat during the void reduction process, which leads to preliminary solidification before the entrapped gas voids could be removed.

Research limitations/implications

The results provide setting information of vacuum vapour phase technology for appropriate and optimal applications.

Originality/value

The relationship between low pressure generation and convective heat transfer mechanism during vacuum vapour phase soldering has not been studied yet. The possible negative effects of the vapour suctioning process on the solder joint temperature are unknown.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the intricate relationship between family influence and perceived justice in performance management systems within family firms. Recognizing the unique dynamics that family ownership brings to human resource practices, the research aims to delineate how family presence affects both the process and the perception of fairness in performance evaluations.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a conceptual framework, the research adopts a dual-method approach, combining a comprehensive literature review with theoretical modeling. The study synthesizes existing research and theoretical insights to explore the effects of family influence on the perceived fairness of performance management practices.

Findings

The findings reveal that family influence profoundly shapes fairness perceptions in performance management, impacting family and non-family employees. It affects systems' design, implementation and reception, with mechanisms including resource distribution and criteria alignment. Specifically, family influence molds fairness perceptions within the performance management process, enhancing organizational performance and fostering trust in family businesses, thus supporting sustainable growth.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the family business and human resource management literature by providing a nuanced understanding of how family dynamics influence perceptions of justice in performance management. It underscores the dual role of family influence in enhancing and complicating fairness perceptions, thus offering a balanced view that can inform academic research and practical HR management in family firms.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse time-series change of the competitiveness of leading companies of the sector based on their financial position regarding the period of financial crisis.

Design/methodology/approach

First, high level of revenue concentration was proved; consequently, strong competitive situation among few competitors was realised. Corporations having three common features (high amount of equity, high revenue and diversified product structure) were included in the sample. As the methodological background financial parameters were assigned to the definition of corporate competitiveness, and then comparative and comprehensive financial analysis of competitors was accomplished. Using relevant studies, liquidity based on balance sheets and cash flow statements, working capital processes, conventional and cash-flow based profitability were analysed.

Findings

It was proved that sample companies continuously improved the efficiency of working capital management indicated by the decrease of the average cash conversion cycle from 45 to 23 days. It was realised that there is a Hungarian-owned firm having outstanding financial performance; consequently, it has significant position among competitors. This company has further opportunity to increase its market share and competitiveness in the future. Finally, important characteristics of the sector were identified concerning the low level of technological improvements (the average ratio was below 3 per cent of the revenue), and unfavourable profitability processes.

Originality/value

In this paper, a separate analytic framework is established in view of the application of financial indicators to analyse competitiveness. This kind of analysis was not executed before in this sector.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show that gig jobs could be considered an alternative way, albeit not the very best, to give work opportunities to older people. This could offset the continuously decreasing income from the pay-as-you-go pension system, which remains the main source of income for older Hungarians.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reviews the most important aspects of employment of older people and highlights the digital divide which still restricts their participation in the labor market. The paper analyzes data from the Hungarian carpooling company Oszkár and compares it with official statistical data from the Hungarian labor market, focusing on the dynamics of the employment of older persons.

Findings

The findings show that the alienation of older workers from the gig economy is just transitory, and that an increasing proportion of older gig workers can be anticipated.

Research limitations/implications

Compiling data on the gig economy faces a number of obstacles, as enterprises are disincentivized from revealing all their data.

Social implications

Older people are more likely to be employed in lower-quality jobs, such as own-account self-employed. They are also increasingly more likely to become gig workers.

Originality/value

The paper articulates the importance of remaining active as one ages and moreover challenges the traditional belief that gig jobs mainly offer opportunities to the younger generations.
