Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the features of three vectorized iterative numerical schemes used to simulate the behavior of modified Burgers equation (MBE).

Design/methodology/approach

Two of the schemes comprise differential quadrature and finite difference methods, while the third scheme consists of only differential quadrature for the derivative approximations. Proposed schemes are simulated for well-posed problems of MBE having known the analytic solution. The computational complexity of the schemes is examined through monitoring the time taken to complete the simulation. The results are compared with the analytic solution with the help of discrete error norms. Also, the accuracy of the proposed schemes is compared with that of the existing schemes in the literature. Vectorized MATLAB programs of the schemes are used for all investigations.

Findings

It is observed that all the three schemes succeeded in producing a good replication of the exact solution. The results are closer to the analytical solution than the results in the literature. Among the three schemes, the scheme labeled as FDTDQS is found highly accurate and computationally cheaper using fewer grid points. From the vectorized MATLAB programs provided, it is evident that the implementation of the schemes is simple.

Originality/value

This study gives an idea about three numerical schemes for a highly nonlinear problem. This mathematical framework can be adopted to any one-dimensional partial differential equation as well, and the provided program will be helpful to generate more fast and accurate vectorized code in MATLAB.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a method for solving nonlinear fractional partial differential equations on the semi-infinite domain and to get better and more accurate results.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors proposed a method by using the Chebyshev wavelets in conjunction with differential quadrature technique. The operational matrices for the method are derived, constructed and used for the solution of nonlinear fractional partial differential equations.

Findings

The operational matrices contain many zero entries, which lead to the high efficiency of the method and reasonable accuracy is achieved even with less number of grid points. The results are in good agreement with exact solutions and more accurate as compared to Haar wavelet method.

Originality/value

Many engineers can use the presented method for solving their nonlinear fractional models.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify, classify and prioritize supply chain risks faced by Indian micro small and medium manufacturing companies and to develop a comprehensive supply chain risk index.

Design/methodology/approach

Primary data has been collected from 354 Indian micro small and medium enterprises on the different supply chain risks faced by them. An extensive literature review followed by expert's interview has been carried out in order to finalize the supply chain risks. A hybrid methodology consists of AHP and Fuzzy TOPSIS is applied for the data analysis. A sensitivity analysis has been done to check the robustness and consistency of the results.

Findings

Results depict the importance of supply side and financial side risks faced by manufacturing supply chains, thus adding to the ongoing academic debate on the importance of supply chain finance solutions.

Research limitations/implications

Study is limited to the scope of an emerging market. Generalization of results needs more systematic studies around the world in different supply chains.

Practical implications

Supply chain managers can consider the benchmark framed in this study in order to identify the health of their supply chain and to efficiently employ supply chain risk management strategies.

Originality/value

The current study is novel in developing a supply chain risk index using a hybrid AHP-Fuzzy TOPSIS methodology with a comprehensive list of 26 supply chain risks under 5 categories for an MSME supply chain. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study incorporating financial risks in the development of a supply chain risk index.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify and prioritise supply chain finance (SCF) adoption enablers and develop a novel comprehensive framework to select supplier firms based on their SCF adoption capability.

Design/methodology/approach

The study deploys a three-phase method to identify and prioritise SCF adoption enablers, followed by developing a model to select suppliers according to their SCF adoption capability. An extensive literature review, followed by a Delphi approach-based expert interview, has been used to finalise the enablers. Using the Best Worst Method and the VIsekriterijumsko KOmpromisno Rangiranje technique, a supplier selection model has been developed in the context of a case company.

Findings

The financial health and technological advancement variables received the top priority, followed by collaborative efficiency, whereas the human resources and organisational variables received the slightest significance. A supplier selection framework has also been developed by using the adoption capability of these factors by the supplier partners. In this study’s model, Supplier 4 exhibited better SCF adoption capability and received the top priority.

Research limitations/implications

Manufacturing supply chains in a developing country are the scope of the current study. Extensive future studies are required to derive a global consensus.

Practical implications

The proposed framework of this study can be used to select supplier firms based on their SCF adoption capability. Policymakers can emphasise the most critical enablers of SCF adoption to assist small supplier firms to be a part of the advanced global supply chains.

Originality/value

The current study established a novel comprehensive framework for supplier selection based on the Supply Chain Finance adoption capability of MSME supplier firms.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the aerodynamics of the airflow over low-rise houses subjected to turbulent cyclonic winds along the South-eastern peninsular India, routinely afflicted by tropical cyclones. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the power of modern computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and its engineering application accentuate decision-making at the planning stage of house designing in vulnerable areas.

Design/methodology/approach

The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was used for first simulating the landfall of cyclone Hudhud, a real storm, and its effect in extant and new house designs. Results from the WRF model were utilized to configure further CFD simulations of airflow around house designs. The analyses yielded deep insights, often non-intuitive, into airflow patterns around these houses with disparate roof forms indicating new possibilities in redesigning houses along Indian coastal areas.

Findings

This study shows that storm-induced high TKE values warranted a fuller CFD-based study. The second major finding showed that for a 90° angle of attack, arguably the most destructive attack angle, a pitched roof (with a pitch angle of 10°) worked best – this is about half the recommended angle sourced from earlier empirical estimates dating back to the British Raj period. There is a thin layer of padded air cushion shielding the roof's vulnerable surface from the storm's most energetic parts.

Originality/value

The originality of this research lies in its discourse to systematically resolve the TKE distribution of a cyclone impacting a standalone house. In particular, the study presents a lucid demonstration of all the probable scenarios connecting cyclonic stresses with a roof response, inferred from a careful combination of results garnered from cyclonic storm modelling coupled with CFD analysis. Additionally, the paper also shows a graphic visual representation of the forces induced on different roof designs, presented as a checklist for the first time. This should serve as a ready reckoner for civic authorities involved in disaster management over cyclone-ravaged areas.

Abstract

Purpose

Supply chain disruptions can have severe negative consequences on companies. However, studies measuring the financial impacts of supply chain disruptions are largely confined to developed nations and large companies. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the impact of supply chain disruption on small companies in the context of an emerging nation. Further, an attempt has been made to classify supply chain disruptions and measure its impact by its type.

Design/methodology/approach

In this research, the event study on 335 supply chain disruption events for a 10 year period starting from 2009 to 2019 has been used.

Findings

The results state that the Indian small and medium companies lost −4.49% of shareholder wealth in disruption. The findings also indicate that the financial and environmental disruptions can have severe effect on shareholder wealth as compared to other category.

Research limitations/implications

The study is confined to a developing country. Considering multiple countries can provide comparative results and therefore a global consensus could be achieved.

Practical implications

The outcomes of the results help managers to plan and prioritize supply chain disruptions, regulatory authorities can plug any possible insider trading practices for small companies in the event of supply chain disruptions. Investors can plan and take prudent investing decisions based on the nature of the disruptions.

Originality/value

To the best of the knowledge, this is the first study measuring the supply chain disruption effects on smaller companies in an emerging nation. The study is also novel in incorporating financial disruptions and measuring source wise impact on shareholder wealth.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the adoption of peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms to determine the factors that encourage SMEs to use P2P lending platforms in obtaining loans.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of ten SMEs from a variety of backgrounds was taken in Bandung, Indonesia. Bandung has been awarded the title of “creative city” by UNESCO, as the city allows for the development of the creative economy. This research used a semi-structured interview. Coding method was then used for content analysis to establish which factors emerging from the interview were leading respondents to obtain a loan through the P2P lending platform.

Findings

The findings imply that loan processes, interest rates, loan costs, loan amounts and loan flexibility affect SMEs in obtaining a loan through P2P lending. Moreover, alternative payment schemes in the form of Sharia-based lending and profit-sharing schemes were found. These findings constituted the original findings of this study.

Research limitations/implications

The study offers findings on factors affecting SMEs in using the P2P lending platform as a form of alternative financing. Moreover, the theoretical framework provided can be used as literature in future research. As this study was conducted in Bandung, Indonesia, the findings may not be generalisable to other regions.

Originality/value

This study is one of the few studies that discusses P2P lending in Indonesia as the concept has been in practice only since 2015.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop and evaluate a mobile application to facilitate stocktaking in libraries implementing radio frequency identification. The case of Bina Nusantara University’s library is used in this study. In this kind of library, near field communication (NFC) tags are placed in the book for getting book information, borrowing or returning and theft prevention, so the application. Stocktaking is an important process to be performed periodically to monitor and maintain the quality of collections and to make these collections easily accessible for library users. However, stocktaking in libraries takes too much effort and needs to be more efficient.

Design/methodology/approach

The design of the mobile application using entity relationship diagram (ERD) includes a diagram and flowchart. An evaluation is done by comparing the stocktaking effort of the latest semester and the previous semester. In the latest semester, the stocktaking is done by a hybrid of the proposed mobile application and a legacy desktop application, whereas the stocktaking of the previous semester is done only using the legacy desktop application.

Findings

Evaluation of the usage of this mobile stocktaking application is 43 per cent more efficient compared to an older desktop application.

Originality/value

The authors report the development of Android-based mobile stocktaking application by using Android’s NFC feature and evaluate it in a real environment.

Abstract

Purpose

Companies all over the world have recently started to adopt supply chain finance (SCF) solutions in their supply chains to reduce the payment defaults and simplify the bill settlement process. The purpose of this paper is to identify and prioritize the barriers to adopting SCF in micro, small and medium enterprises.

Design/methodology/approach

It employs a three-phase methodology to identify and prioritize the essential barriers to the implementation of SCF. An extensive survey has been carried out in 101 Indian MSMEs in India which identified 37 barriers under six heads in the first phase. Experts’ interview using the Delphi technique has been carried out in the second phase to finalize the barriers. The analytic hierarchy process methodology, with sensitivity analysis for validation, is used in the final stage to prioritize and rank the barriers.

Findings

Results show that financial and information technology barriers are prominent in SCF adoption followed by financial challenges. Among specific barriers, the disclosure of sensitive company information to competitor barrier acts as an essential barrier followed by poor technological capability of MSMEs.

Research limitations/implications

The study is limited to SCF adoption of MSMEs in a developing nation. Extensive research is required in order to derive a global trend.

Practical implications

The current research contributes to the stakeholder theory and transaction cost economics. Observations made in the current research can encourage organizations to incorporate stakeholders’ concerns into the adoption of SCF solutions. The study provides a more in-depth view of such challenges and a benchmark, which will help companies to adopt SCF solutions more effortlessly. Moreover, policy makers across the world can explore these serious issues and amend or introduce new policies to facilitate companies’ implementation of supply chain financial solutions.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study which identified and prioritized SCF adoption barriers of MSMEs in a developing nation. This study is also novel in adopting a hybrid analytical hierarchy process-sensitivity analysis for ranking the SCF barriers in an MSME context. SCF studies often emphasize only on the reverse factoring aspect of SCF. The current study considers many innovative aspects of SCF, such as pre-shipment financing, dynamic discounting, inventory financing, collaborative logistics, etc.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the effects of travel experience dimensions on tourist satisfaction and destination loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 457 international tourists visiting Phuket through a convenience sampling method. The structural equation modeling approach by AMOS was used to test the effects.

Findings

In case of island destination, beach attraction is not the only factor contributing to tourists’ loyalty, but hospitality of local people also plays an essential component to retain loyal tourists.

Research limitations/implications

This study examined only one construct (i.e. travel experience) affecting tourist satisfaction and destination loyalty.

Practical implications

Tourist experience in beach attractions and local people are the key factors to retain royal tourists.

Social implications

Quality of beaches and friendliness of local people are important factors to promote island tourism.

Originality/value

Two key factors of tourist experience were found to affect tourists’ loyalty in the case of island destination: beach attractions and local people.
