Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to optimize input parameters of particle size and applied load to determine minimum weight loss and friction coefficient for Al2O3/SiC particles-reinforced hybrid composites by using Taguchi’s design methodology.

Design/methodology/approach

The experimental results demonstrate that the applied size is the major parameter influencing the weight loss for all samples, followed by particle size. The applied load, however, was found to have a negligible effect on the friction coefficient. Moreover, the optimal combination of the testing parameters was predicted. The predicted weight loss and friction coefficient for all the test samples were found to lie close to those of the experimentally observed ones.

Findings

The optimum levels of the control factors to obtain better weight loss and friction coefficient were A8 (particle size, 60 μm) and B1 (applied load, 20 N), respectively. Taguchi’s orthogonal design was developed to predict the quality characteristics (weight loss and friction coefficient) within the selected range of process parameters (particle size and applied load). The results were validated through ANOVA.

Originality/value

Firstly, hybrid MMCs ceramic powders were produced and then mechanical tests and optimization were performed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate in a country-specific comparative and panel form, the impact of energy use on financial development in Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)-African countries of Algeria, Gabon, Libya and Nigeria.

Design/methodology/approach

With data sets covering the period 1980 to 2020, this study used a combination of country-specific autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL) and panel-ARDL as well geo-maps to show the spatiotemporal nuances of the investigated countries.

Findings

It was discovered across the investigated countries and in the panel framework that energy consumption significantly impacts both bank development and institutional development, which are subsets of financial development. In addition, evidence in favor of adjustment of financial development to the shocks and dynamics of energy consumption was found.

Practical implications

Integrative developmental drive for the two sectors can enhance growth and value-chain interactions for the imperatives of the overall growth and development of the OPEC-African countries.

Originality/value

This study adds to the literature on finance and energy development by the introduction of the spatiotemporal analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of social media sharing on tourists’ willingness to pay more (WPM) at destinations. The moderating effects of tourists’ preferred route in decision-making or obtaining information (i.e. central or peripheral routes) were also examined.

Design/methodology/approach

A theoretical model was developed and tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Moderating effects of central and peripheral routes were tested using PLS multi-group analysis. Data were collected from 478 tourists in Antalya, Turkey, a sea, sun and sand tourist destination.

Findings

Findings indicate that importance attached to participant sharing (IPS) and importance attached to non-participant sharing (INPS) are significant antecedents of tourists’ WPM intentions. Moderating effects of tourists’ preferred route in decision-making reveal that the effect of IPS on WPM intention is more influential for those with high central route preferences than those with low central route preferences. While the effects of INPS and IPS on WPM intention is more determinative for those with higher peripheral route preferences.

Practical implications

Although it is known by the practitioners that consumer-generated contents are important, this research suggests and supports that these contents trigger tourists to pay higher prices.

Originality/value

How WPM is motivated by others’ social media sharing was not very clear in the literature. Therefore, this research gap was addressed in part by examining the social media sharing structure in terms of whether others posted on organization-related sites or on personal sites.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the tribological performance of neat polyamide-imide (PAI) and PAI composite (PAI + 12% graphite + 3% polytetrafluoroethylene [PTFE]) under varying mediums and conditions, including dry sliding, distilled water and seawater lubrication, to determine their suitability for high-stress applications.

Design/methodology/approach

Tribological tests were conducted using a pin-on-disc setup with AISI 316 L stainless steel (SS) as counterface. Experiments were carried out under loads of 150 and 300 N and sliding speeds of 1.5 and 3.0 m/s. Values of temperatures, friction coefficients and wear rates were recorded to analyze the effect of fillers and lubrication mediums.

Findings

The PAI composite outperformed the neat PAI under all conditions, showing significant reductions in friction coefficients and wear rates. Seawater lubrication yielded the best results, achieving friction coefficients of 0.05 and 0.01 and specific wear rates of 18.10−16 m²/N and 1.10 −15 m²/N, for neat PAI and PAI composite, respectively. Graphite and PTFE fillers enhanced lubrication, reduced surface temperatures and mitigated abrasive and adhesive wear mechanisms. Superior cooling and lubrication effects of the seawater contributed to these improvements.

Originality/value

Previous studies mainly focused on dry sliding and distilled water lubrication for the PAI and its composites, with no research on the seawater conditions. This study compares the tribological behaviors of the neat PAI and PAI composite against AISI 316 L SS under dry sliding, distilled water and seawater lubrication.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is investigate the dynamic linkages among industrial energy use, industrial value added, financial development (FD) and trade openness, in case of India. The study covers the annual frequency data on both aggregate and disaggregate variables for the period 1971–2016.

Design/methodology/approach

The autoregressive distributed lag bounds testing approach is applied to examine the long-run relation among variables under consideration. Also, Johansen and Juselius (1990) and vector error-correction mechanism results confirm the result of cointegration. Furthermore, non-linear relationship in the model is also tested.

Findings

It has been found that there exists long-run relationship among variables. Long-run estimates show that increasing FD leads to more energy uses. Hence, FD should be directed in such a way that it incentivises firms to invest in energy-efficient technology. Furthermore, it is also found that study supports the evidence of conservative hypothesis, which supports that the energy conservation policy should be adopted in the industrial sector. Energy efficiency programme needs to be designed very carefully to achieve a higher level of energy efficiency. This leads to a sustainable growth and low carbon emission.

Originality/value

This paper examines the recent trend in Indian industrial energy consumption and does a comprehensive analysis using a robust econometric method. We have developed a lucid model to examine the deriving factors of industrial energy consumption.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to examine the psychological impact of COVID-19 on health workers' career satisfaction and intention to leave the health profession, with neurotic personality type as a moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 277 health workers in two public hospitals in Ghana were included in this study. Purposive and convenience sampling techniques were adopted for the study, focusing on eight departments that were involved in the management of COVID-19 cases. Validated instruments were used to measure burnout, intention to leave, neurotic personality and career satisfaction. Using AMOS and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), various techniques were employed to analyze mediating and moderating mechanisms.

Findings

The departments had staff sizes ranging from 19 to 40, with 67% female and 33% male, with an average age of 31. Nurses accounted for the majority of responses (67.8%), followed by physicians (13.9%), sonographers (0.9%), lab technicians (0.9%) and other respondents (16.5%). The study found that health workers’ level of burnout during COVID-19 had a positive effect on their intention to leave the health profession. Career satisfaction does not mediate this relationship; however, career satisfaction negatively influences the intention to leave the health profession. A neurotic personality does not moderate this relationship.

Originality/value

This study provides validation of burnout and intention to leave among health workers in Ghana during COVID-19 and supports the proposition that threats to resources (burnout) and having a resource (career satisfaction) have effects on the intention to leave one’s profession.
