Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to capture the evolution and status of utilization of the Six Sigma philosophy in the development of small to medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as to document prominent development of practices through a systematic literature review.
Design/methodology/approach
The methodology adopted for this study used the principles of content analysis and deductive reasoning vis‐à‐vis various sub domains of Six Sigma methodology pertaining to industries in general and SMEs in particular.
Findings
The literature revealed that: Management's commitment is most important in SME Six sigma implementation. Benefits of Six Sigma have been enjoyed largely by the bigger industrial units and to a relatively lesser extent by the smaller units, i.e. SMEs. Quality management culture has largely been ignored or given less importance in the SME sector, which is evident from the meagre literature. There is a dearth of clear and SME‐specific methodologies (for Six Sigma approach) for quality improvement and there are far fewer models for quality improvement in the SME sector.
Originality/value
It has been found, on the basis of a systematic literature review approach (used in this paper), that quality management and development in SMEs needs to be done in a planned manner using Six Sigma roadmap.

Abstract
Purpose
The investigation aims to improve Nd: YAG laser technology for precision cutting of carbon fiber reinforcing polymers (CFRPs), specifically those containing newly created resin (NDR) from the polyethylene and polyurea group, is the goal of the study. The focus is on showing how Nd: YAG lasers may be used to precisely cut CFRP with NDR materials, emphasizing how useful they are for creating intricate and long-lasting components.
Design/methodology/approach
The study employs a systematic approach that includes complicated factorial designs, Taguchi L27 orthogonal array trials, Gray relational analysis (GRA) and machine learning predictions. The effects of laser cutting factors on CFRP with NDR geometry are investigated experimentally, with the goal of optimizing the cutting process for greater quality and efficiency. The approach employs data-driven decision-making with GRA, which improves cut quality and manufacturing efficiency while producing high-quality CFRP composites. Integration of machine learning models into the optimization process significantly boosts the precision and cost-effectiveness of laser cutting operations for CFRP materials.
Findings
The work uses Taguchi L27 orthogonal array trials for systematically explore the effects of specified parameters on CFRP cutting. The cutting process is then optimized using GRA, which identifies influential elements and determines the ideal parameter combination. In this paper, initially machining parameters are established at level L3P3C3A2, and the optimal machining parameters are determined to be at levels L3P2C3A3 and L3P2C1A2, based on predictions and experimental results. Furthermore, the study uses machine learning prediction models to continuously update and optimize kerf parameters, resulting in high-quality cuts at a lower cost. Overall, the study presents a holistic method to optimize CFRP cutting processes employing sophisticated techniques such as GRA and machine learning, resulting in better quality and efficiency in manufacturing operations.
Originality/value
The novel concept is in precisely measuring the kerf width and deviation in CFRP samples of NDR using sophisticated imaging techniques like SEM, which improves analysis and precision. The newly produced resin from the polyethylene and polyurea group with carbon fiber offers a more precise and comprehensive understanding of the material's behavior under different cutting settings, which makes it novel for kerf width and kerf deviation in their studies. To optimize laser cutting settings in real time while considering laser machining conditions, the study incorporates material insights into machine learning models.

Purpose
The International Journal of Organizational Analysis (IJOA) is a leading journal that has published high-quality research focused on various facets of organizational analysis since 1993. This paper aims to conduct a retrospective analysis of the IJOA journey from 2005 to 2020.
Design/methodology/approach
The data used in this study was extracted using the Scopus database. The bibliometric analysis, using several indicators, is adopted to reveal the major trends and themes of the journal. The mapping of bibliographic data is carried using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny.
Findings
The study findings indicate that IJOA has grown for publications and citations since its inception. Five significant research directions emerged, i.e. organizational diagnostics, organization citizenship behaviour, organizational commitment to employee retention, psychological capital and firm performance, based on cluster analysis of IJOA’s publications.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of IJOA. The study presents the key themes and trends emerging from a leading journal, considered a high-quality journal, for researching various facets of organizational functioning by academicians, scholars and practitioners.

Abstract
Purpose
The alternative arrangements to traditional employment have become a promising area in the gig economy with the technological advancements dominating every work. The purpose of this paper is to explore the barriers to the entry of gig workers in gig platforms pertaining to the food delivery sector. It proposes a framework using interpretive structural modelling (ISM) for which systematic literature review is done to extract the variables. This analysis helps to examine the relationship between the entry barriers to gig platforms. The study further proposes strategies to reduce the entry barriers in gig sector which would help to enhance productivity and generate employment opportunities.
Design/methodology/approach
The study uses interpretive structural model (ISM) to ascertain the relationship between various entry barriers of the gig workers to the gig platforms. It also validates the relationship and understand the reasons of their association along with MICMAC analysis. The model was designed by consulting the gig workers and the experts allied to food delivery gig platforms namely Zomato and Swiggy.
Findings
It was observed that high competition, longer login hours and late-night deliveries are the significant barriers with high driving power and low dependence power. Poor payment structures and strict terms and conditions for receiving the incentives are interdependent on each other and have moderate driving and dependence power. The expenses borne by the gig workers, such as Internet, fuel and vehicle maintenance expenses have high dependence power and low driving power. Hence, they are relatively less significant than other barriers.
Research limitations/implications
The study is confined to food delivery sector of India, without considering other important sectors of gig economy for generalizing the framework. As the study is based on forming an ISM framework through literature review only, it does not consider other research methods for analysing the entry barriers to the gig platforms.
Practical implications
The study attempts to dig out the low entry barriers for gig workers in food delivery platforms as there is a dearth of analysis of these factors. This study would weave them using ISM framework to help the gig platforms overcome these barriers at various levels, thus adding to the body of literature.
Originality/value
The study discusses the need for understanding relationship between the entry barriers in the form of ISM model to identify the dependent and driving factors of the same.

International Journal of Emerging Markets (IJoEM) is a leading journal that publishes high-quality research focused on emerging markets. In 2020, IJoEM celebrated its fifteenth anniversary, and the objective of this paper is to conduct a retrospective analysis to commensurate IJoEM's milestone.
Design/methodology/approach
Data used in this study were extracted using the Scopus database. Bibliometric analysis, using several indicators, is adopted to reveal the major trends and themes of a journal. Mapping of bibliographic data is carried using VOSviewer.
Findings
Study findings indicate that IJoEM has been growing for publications and citations since its inception. Four significant research directions emerged, i.e. consumer behaviour, financial markets, financial institutions and corporate governance and strategic dimensions based on cluster analysis of IJoEM's publications. The identified future research directions are focused on emergent investments opportunities, trends in behavioural finance, emerging role technology-financial companies, changing trends in corporate governance and the rising importance of strategic management in emerging markets.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of IJoEM. Purpose
Nowadays, ionic liquids (ILs) are used as lubricant additives because of their ability to improve tribological characteristics. However, majority of the ILs contains halogen-based anions. They are extremely sensitive to moisture and produce detrimental halides and halogen acids when reacted with moisture and water. These halides and halogen acids are harmful to the health and environment of the operator’s. This paper aims to study four different lubricants including two halogen-based ILs blended in canola oil and two phosphonium-based halogen-free ILs blended in canola oil and in pure canola oil.
Design/methodology/approach
Viscosity and contact angle were measured by using rheometer and contact angle goniometer, respectively. Machining experiments were performed using turning centre with four different lubricants at two different cutting speeds and temperatures, and the machining forces, tool morphology and roughness of the machined surface were analysed.
Findings
The results showed that the inclusion of 1% phosphonium-based halogen-free ILs blended in canola oil increased the viscosity by 44.8% and reduced the cutting and thrust force by 21.7% and 26.8%, respectively, compared to pure canola oil lubricant. Microscopic analysis of tool showed lower adhesive and abrasive wear when machined with phosphonium-based halogen-free ILs blended in canola oil. The workpiece surface roughness reduced by 32% for phosphonium-based halogen-free ILs blended in canola oil compared with pure canola oil.
Originality/value
Halogen-free ILs are possible green lubricants, as they do not contain harmful elements such as F, S, B and Cl like halogen-based ILs. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is presumably the first work which shows machining performance of halogen-free ILs as lubricant additives.

Purpose
Literature reviews are a pervasive aspect in research. An ever mounting field such as Lean Six Sigma requires a perpetual touch on the subject to accentuate insights that can be researched about. The purpose of this paper is to address the published literatures in the field of Lean Six Sigma through multiple criterion for an enhanced understanding of the subject matter through summarizing its current trends, uncovering existing literature gaps and revealing opportunities for future research in the field.
Design/methodology/approach
The literature review on Lean Six Sigma field spans around 17 years that includes peer-reviewed journals from management, business, engineering, healthcare, manufacturing, military among the many disciplines. The study uses a content analysis approach in which several dimensions of the literature were analysed: purpose or focus of study, years of publication, journal name or publications, methodologies, theories used, country of study, industry sub-sectors, active authors in the field, critical success factors, barriers and challenges and the most contribution of Lean Six Sigma papers by universities.
Findings
Eleven important findings from the analysis were summarized among them; the field of Lean Six Sigma had begun to grow significantly since the new millennium particularly after the 2004-2007 or 2008 period; standalone concepts of Lean and Six Sigma are highly researched compared to the integrated concepts; large proportion of perspective, conceptual and descriptive based studies; lack of empirical validity on the fusion between Lean and Six Sigma; lack of theoretical based studies, etc.
Research limitations/implications
The study is limited to 102 journals in commonly searched databases in the subject matter which produced 261 journal papers. This study seeks to broaden the summary of studies done under the keyword “Lean Six Sigma”.
Originality/value
The review analysis uses a content analysis approach in search of valuable gaps in existing research. The study found 261 papers from 102 journals that were published over the past seventeen years (2000-2016). This paper provides scholars, practitioners and managers with insights on the present trends and focus of Lean Six Sigma in addition to what else are lacking in the subject matter, which could pave the way for future research and practical endeavours.
