Abstract
Purpose
Does Fortune magazine’s list of the 100 Fastest-Growing Companies have information content; that is, is the list a source for market-beating performance? The paper aims to discuss this issue.
Design/methodology/approach
Using data for 26 annual periods, 1991–2016, the paper examines the top 5, 10, 25, 50 and all 100 stocks on a return-risk basis, including an application of Modern Portfolio Theory. To generate portfolio performance metrics, the study uses conventional mean-variance analysis, which includes the estimation of returns and risks, where risk will be measured by standard deviation and β. To arrive at the performance metrics and to determine whether information content is embedded in the list, the study reviews a series of tests. Because Fortune ranks the companies from 1 to 100, the data can be used to test if information content is displayed in sub-groups, such as in the first five to ten companies, even if it does not exist in the 100-stock portfolios.
Findings
The study finds that the returns are not high enough nor are the risks low enough statistically to conclude the existence of significant information content.
Research limitations/implications
As part of the authors’ efforts to move to the population of 2,600 firms as closely as possible, the authors use “delisting” returns from CRSP on 120 firms to account for missing observations, with a final sample size of 2,594 firms.
Practical implications
The evidence indicates that investors drawn to Fortune’s “100 Fastest-Growing Companies” should view them skeptically as a source for an effective stock selection strategy.
Originality/value
On the basis of the results of this study, readers will conclude that subscribers drawn to Fortune’s “100 Fastest-Growing Companies” should view them skeptically for investment recommendations. From a portfolio perspective, the study is unable to uncover information content that could lead to a market-beating performance, suggesting that the published criteria Fortune uses to select the Fastest-Growing Companies is embedded in the prices of the stocks even before Fortune publishes its list. The study notes that the selection criteria used by Fortune do involve some judgments on the part of the editorial staff (e.g. whether an announced restatement of previously reported financial data appears to have a significant impact), which means that someone who wished to anticipate the publication of the next list of the “Fastest-Growing Companies” would not only have to gather information but would also have to correctly anticipate these judgment calls.

Abstract
To examine how public servants are depicted in film, I discuss the changes over time of Batmanʼs Commissioner Gordon, particularly his character arc in the contemporary The Dark Knight trilogy. An important aspect of Gordonʼs evolution is in contrast to the filmsʼ other prominent public servant, District Attorney Harvey Dent. The Gordon-Dent contrast illustrates aspects of the Friedrich-Finer debate over administrative discretion, a classic debate in public administration. The trilogyʼs verdict on public service is mixed: the flawed, rule-bending, expedient public servant survives while the fabricated hero is a sham. Commissioner Gordon is far more interesting than he had been for decades, but is he just an expedient bureaucrat ultimately pursuing self preservation? In contrast, the (pre-villain) Harvey Dent, who refuses to compromise his principles, is ultimately undone by his absolutism. For the complexity of his character and its centrality to the plot, I judge the depiction of Commissioner Gordon-warts and all-to be better than simplistic caricatures of bureaucrats and promising for future public servants in film.

Abstract
Purpose
To explore from an ethical paradigm the current research in support of and opposition to imposing caps on non‐economic damages as a means of addressing the healthcare crisis.
Design/methodology/approach
A review of peer‐ and non‐peer‐reviewed articles primarily covering the period from 2001‐2004, which addresses the rationale articulated in support of and in opposition to imposing caps on non‐economic damages. The articles are sorted into sections and critiqued: rationale for imposing caps, arguments against caps, ethical paradigms impacting caps, and conclusions.
Findings
Provides information from the various sources. Addresses the biases that may have shaped the authors' conclusions and some of the ethical paradigms that may have impacted positions. Also demonstrates that the unbiased research seems to establish a minimal nexus between caps and the proposed impact.
Research limitations/implications
Focus is exclusively on the US healthcare and judicial system. However, findings may still have implications outside the USA in countries that have similar tort laws for addressing private wrongs.
Practical implications
A useful source of information for graduate students in public policy or healthcare management courses, or legislators looking for a quick reference to research regarding this topic area.
Originality/value
This paper fulfills an identified resource for non‐biased assessment of the problem presented and provides a critical review of the reasons articulated in support of this public policy.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to compare violent and non-violent extremists in terms of their age when they first perpetrate an extremist act, and to understand how this relates to other factors underlying extremist behaviours. While the end goal of many extremists may be functionally similar, the pathways into extremism vary, and the literature has demonstrated that a “one-size-fits-all” explanation does not exist. Motivational drivers are complex and dynamic; therefore, attempting to identify a terrorist “profile” has limited applied efficacy.
Design/methodology/approach
This study applied a temporal approach (“crime script analysis” or CSA) to identify, map and compare the sequential stages (or “scenes”) in the life histories of violent and non-violent extremists who have committed acts of extremism across different age groups. Crime scripts comprising mainly qualitative data for 40 male extremists (20 violent, 20 non-violent “cases”) were developed, and CSA was conducted according to the age at which they committed their first extremist offence.
Findings
Results demonstrated key temporal, developmental differences between the pathways of extremists who commit their first offence at different ages. One key difference was that for both the violent and non-violent extremists, those under 30 used the internet as a main means of joining networks and spreading information, whereas the over 30s made more personal, community links.
Originality/value
This research can aid identification of potential environmental triggers and potential increased susceptibility to triggers across certain age groups.

Abstract
Purpose
The current study aims to identify the impact of financial literacy, financial risk-tolerance, financial socialization, financial stress, socio-demographic factors and financial behavior on the individual financial wellbeing residing in India's National Capital Region (NCR) region. Understanding financial wellbeing is crucial as it helps individuals understand personal finance better and develop a more favorable financial attitude. The information can depict individuals' financial skills, knowledge and attitudes toward achieving financial wellbeing in emerging economies.
Design/methodology/approach
Through self-administered survey questionnaires, data are obtained using convenience sampling from 420 (394) respondents regarding individual financial wellbeing levels in India. The survey responses were collected between May 2022 and July 2022. The authors use the “partial least squares structural equation modeling” (PLS-SEM) technique to test the research hypotheses.
Findings
The present study's outcome confirms that five determinants, such as financial literacy, financial risk-tolerance, financial socialization, financial stress and socio-demographic factors, significantly influence the financial behavior of individuals. Further, financial behavior, financial literacy, financial risk-tolerance and financial socialization significantly influence financial wellbeing. However, financial stress and socio-demographic factors have statistically insignificant impacts on financial wellbeing.
Originality/value
The present study is exclusive in which an effort is being made to acquire relative importance on financial behavior and an individual's financial wellbeing. The present paper will help the government, financial services providers, and policymakers in offering innovative economic schemes and designing policies that may enhance the financial wellbeing of individuals. Finally, this article provides the road map for future research in this field.

Abstract
Purpose
Peripheral vision (PV) or side vision refers to that which is visible to the eye while being outside of its central area of focus. PV enables organisms to detect movement and potential threats in their environment. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the concept of PV in the business environment, as well as its relationship with knowledge structures in the form of technology knowledge and absorptive capacity. The relative importance and significance of technology knowledge and absorptive capacity as mediators between “relational capital” (RC) and “PV” are also examined.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper reports an empirical investigation involving 125 employees from the banking sector. Data collected was statistically analysed using PLS-graph software version 03.00. Results of the data analysis show relationships uncovered in the existing literature.
Findings
The creation of RC by employees from the banking sector relies to a large extent on managers’ ability to perceive, analyse and understand activity that is often outside the focus of their attention.
Practical implications
Managers who explicitly value their RC have a wider vision of their environment. In turn, a wider understanding of the activity in the environment drives the strengthening of the organisation and its RC.
Originality/value
PV can have a direct impact on the organisation’s appetite for the development of its technology knowledge base, thus contributing to enhance the firm’s absorptive capacity as well as the extent, quality and value of its RC.

Abstract
More than 20 songs by Spanish and non-Spanish bands about the Castilian lord and epic hero Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid, account for the topicality of the Hispanic Middle Ages in heavy metal. This chapter explores how diversely El Cid is addressed in 10 of these songs, in particular, from the perspectives of reception theory and both the cultural background of the band (Spanish or non-Spanish) and the language in which the lyrics are written (Spanish or English). Through detailed textual analysis and contextualisation, I will examine how, for Spanish (and Spanish-American) bands, El Cid serves the purpose of naturalising the stereotypical heavy-metal medieval knight, thereby functioning as a vindication of Hispanic cultural heritage within what is perceived to be an Anglo-American (and Germanic-Nordic) dominated musical scene. By contrast, non-Spanish bands resort primarily to El Cid to refresh the overused motif of the medieval knight, but sometimes in a more connoted manner as well, in which his iconic value as a Moor-slayer and a defender of the Western white Christian principles is highlighted. Moreover, I will discuss the appropriation and re-appropriation of El Cid by, respectively, non-Spanish and Spanish heavy metal bands, from the point of view of cultural appreciation and appropriation, and Islamophobia.
