Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to unite framing theory with instructional practice through the introduction of a novel instructional activity.
Design/methodology/approach
This study is designed to showcase how framing theory can be used to inform educational practice.
Findings
In keeping with framing theory and effects, the exercise serves to strengthen and reinforce the investment of students. The feedback collected via the framing activity provides a means for professors to modify or re-frame course content to best meet students’ needs.
Research limitations/implications
Framing theory can be used as an effective means of developing instructional resources. Linking theory to practice within instructional design demonstrates the applied significance of framing theory, particularly within educational contexts.
Practical implications
By utilizing this activity on the first day of class, instructors can address institutional challenges posed by fluctuating enrollment. In addition, the information gathered from the activity will help instructors to cultivate a learning environment from students’ own wealth of experiences, interests and goals.
Originality/value
This paper introduces an innovative instructional activity designed to be used on the first day of a course. The primary objective of this technique is to guide students into establishing a personal connection to a course while providing a vehicle to tailor course content to students’ interests and expectations. This approach, which is not limited to a specific discipline, is a unique and effective means of uniting framing theory with instructional practice in order to develop a framework for a meaningful and memorable course.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview and critique of altmetrics, an understudied yet increasingly important arena of study for scholars, academics, and professional researchers.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is organized into six parts: the first defines altmetrics; the second examines how altmetrics work; the third presents multiple typologies under which altmetrics can be classified and studied; the fourth details the technological capabilities of altmetrics; the fifth presents a critical evaluation of the “pros and cons” of altmetrics; and, the sixth outlines some directions for future and ongoing research.
Findings
The conclusions detail the strengths and limitations of altmetrics and point toward avenues for continued research and development.
Originality/value
This paper is among the first to provide a substantive review and evaluation of altmetrics for academics to consider when adopting, utilizing, and researching these tools.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is twofold: the first aim is theoretical – to review extant literature on academic social networks, while considering current limitations and potential avenues for future research; the second objective is practical – to introduce an illustrative comparison guide that researchers can use to identify and distinguish between the functionalities of popular academic social networking sites (ASNSs), including Academia.edu, Mendeley.com, ResearchGate.net, Zotero.org, and Google Scholar.
Design/methodology/approach
The review of research is descriptive and conceptual.
Findings
The overarching outcomes of the review suggest that research on academic social networks falls into two primary arenas – promises (i.e. potential benefits to the academic community) and perils (i.e. reservations expressed by scholars). The authors recommend that a greater focus on the unique characteristics and utilities of specific sites and a more robust understanding of scholars’ use preferences and practices is warranted in future and ongoing research.
Originality/value
This is the first review of ASNSs to provide comparative descriptions for scholars to utilize when making decisions about adoption, use, and research.

Abstract
Much of the discussion surrounding the antivaccine movement focuses on the decision of parents to not vaccinate their children and the resulting danger posed to others. However, the primary risk is borne by the child left unvaccinated. Although living in a developed country with high vaccination rates provides a certain amount of protection through population immunity, the unvaccinated child is still exposed to a considerably greater risk of preventable diseases than one who is vaccinated. I explore the tension between parental choice and the child’s right to be free of preventable diseases. The chapter’s goal is twofold: to advocate for moving from a dyadic framework – considering the interests of the parents against those of the state – to a triadic one, in which the interests of the child are given as much weight as those of the parent and the state; and to discuss which protections are available, and how they can be improved. Specific legal tools available to protect that child are examined, including tort liability of the parents to the child, whether and to what degree criminal law has a role, under what circumstances parental choice should be overridden, and the role of school immunization requirements in protecting the individual child.
