Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to empirically assess entrepreneurial leadership skills’ role in Corporate Sustainable Development (CSD) and firm performance (FP). This study considers five specific entrepreneurial traits: innovativeness, creativity, analytical thinking, emotional intelligence and passion and motivation. The motivation for this investigation stems from concerns over micro-firms vulnerabilities and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) lacking proper leadership skills. This study is guided by the resource-based view theory and conducted during the pandemic, offering insights into firms operating under constrained conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM), were used on survey responses from 321 Bahraini firms. This study’s data collection occurred under environmental uncertainties due to the pandemic and provides a unique context for understanding CSD and entrepreneurial leadership skills under high business/environmental uncertainty.

Findings

The findings reveal that entrepreneurial leadership skills positively impact CSD and firm performance through creativity, passion and motivation. However, innovativeness negatively affects CSD and FP. Furthermore, CSD positively influences firm performance.

Research limitations/implications

Theoretical and practical implications, plus limitations, are also discussed in this study.

Practical implications

Understanding entrepreneurial leadership skills effect on CSD and firm performance in SMEs is important as SEMs are prone to fail in the early years. This study’s findings and its implications help guide SME leaders in furthering their entrepreneurial leadership skills to foster CSD and firm performance.

Originality/value

This study contributes to comprehending the crucial role of entrepreneurial skills, during uncertain times of the pandemic, for SMEs’ survival. It provides valuable insights for firms operating in competitive environments, offering a unique perspective on the required entrepreneurial skills and their effect on CSD and firm performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Healthcare (HC) utilizes informatics to provide its services through information technology (IT) where social network is a promising initiative to aid medical decision-making (DM) quality. Even though HC is a globally expensive investment and a complex service-oriented industry, it still suffers from quality due to frequently occurring medical errors. In order to reduce medical errors, medical DM needs to be improved. This research has participated in this effort by exploring social capital theory (SCT) within a virtual community of practice (VCoP), HC knowledge management (KM) process – knowledge sharing quality and medical DM quality.

Design/methodology/approach

Traditional and up-to-date HC-related and non-HC-related theoretical, empirical and case study-based literature review has been thoroughly analyzed to hence support the inter-relationships between the theoretical constructs being: SCT, knowledge sharing quality and medical DM quality presented as a conceptual framework. This conceptual framework is based on propositions derived from thorough literature review theory to relate between each of the constructs.

Findings

SCT has the potential to facilitate medical DM within a VCoP, as well as, knowledge sharing quality plays a mediating and facilitating role between SCT and medical DM quality.

Research limitations/implications

The study has significantly focussed on SCT, which is actually part of the social sciences and anthropology discipline. In parallel, this research also analyzed the literature that pertained to the value of a VCoP to improve medical DM quality.

Practical implications

The study's focus on SCT, knowledge sharing and medical DM; hence promotes future empirical research findings to be compared within a particular HC VC; from a case study point of view.

Originality/value

The paper adds value to the large body of intellectual knowledge by enhancing the conception of medical DM quality to improve HC quality. Medical DM is a soft area of research. This research has introduced a new avenue on which HC quality can be improved by reducing medical errors, from the perspective of social computing and medical DM quality and the mediating role of knowledge sharing quality.

Abstract

Purpose

The Moroccan monetary authorities have implemented an Islamic banking system since 2017 as an alternative to the conventional system. However, the adoption of Islamic banking products and services is not widely accepted by customers. The purpose of this study is to propose a conceptual framework to understand the determinants of Islamic banking products and services adoption in Morocco.

Design/methodology/approach

This study develops a conceptual framework based on the diffusion of innovation theory (DOI). Thus, with reference to an extensive literature review done regarding adoption studies, the proposed research model integrates perceived attributes of innovation (relative advantage, compatibility, complexity and observability) suggested by the DOI theory. It also integrates other relevant variables that should be considered in the context of this study. These include knowledge, perceived risk and customer involvement.

Findings

The proposed conceptual framework demonstrates and justifies the relevance and the applicability of Rogers’ DOI to understand consumer decisions to adopt an innovation in general as well as Islamic banks in particular.

Originality/value

Several studies have examined the factors influencing the adoption of Islamic banks; however, those carried out in the Moroccan context remain very limited. The majority of these studies examine the intention to adopt in the future, whereas the present study seeks to establish a conceptual research model that examines the determinants of current adoption of Islamic banking in Morocco and the continuity of this adoption over time. The novelty of this study is to develop a modified model based on DOI theory which, according to the existing literature, has not yet been tested in the Moroccan context.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to gain a deep understanding of the process of international commercial terms (Incoterms) selection by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Bangladesh and identify the key factors that influence their choices. The study also intends to explore the discrepancy between the literature and the actual industry practice so that policymakers and traders can make more informed decisions in this respect.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopts a mixed methodology. Initially, 20 factors under five principle components were identified by reviewing the literature. The semi-structured one-to-one interview method has been used to gather expert opinions on the factors and to identify the discrepancy between literature and actual industry practices. Finally, eight factors have been identified and surveyed using the best-worst method (BWM) to determine their relative significance or weights in Incoterm selection.

Findings

The study has found that government policies, the influence of banks and currency fluctuations are the top three influential factors in selecting Incoterms by SMEs in Bangladesh. As a result, the most commonly used Incoterms are free on board (FOB) for the exporters and cost and freight (CFR) for the importers. However, discrepancies have been identified between the selected and the actual application of the Incoterms.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to identify and analyse the factors that influence the selection of Incoterms by the SMEs in the context of a developing nation. The study has identified the factors from both importers’ and exporters’ perspectives that have not been done by any previous studies. Moreover, this study explores the discrepancies between the agreed Incoterm and the actual industry practices which is a unique contribution to the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the role of corporate governance (CG) in the earnings management (EM) of affiliated companies in family business groups (FBGs) listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), using principal–principal agency theory.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample of 327 nonfinancial firms of the PSX, consisting of 187 group-affiliated firms and 140 nonaffiliated firms has been used in this study for the period of 2010 to 2019. The study uses different regression models for analysis, with robustness tests of various alternative measures of EM and FBG affiliation. In addition, endogeneity is controlled with the propensity score matching method.

Findings

The findings show that EM is less prevalent in affiliated firms compared to nonaffiliated companies. The results show a negative and significant relationship between FBGs affiliated firms and EM. Moreover, the results also show a positive relationship between EM and the interaction term of the CG index and group affiliation. It refers to the fact that effective governance cannot reduce EM in affiliated companies of FBGs as well as in the nonfinancial companies of the PSX. In addition, the quality of CG is higher in affiliated companies compared to its counterpart in nonaffiliated firms. The findings support the principal–principal agency theory that CG cannot mitigate the expropriating behavior of controlling shareholders against minority shareholders by reducing EM in emerging markets due to the ownership concentration phenomenon.

Research limitations/implications

This research study has implications for small investors, government agencies and regulators. The findings of the study show that CG code should make it mandatory for companies to reveal information about their complex ownership structure and ownership information about affiliated companies and directors. Furthermore, it is suggested to revisit the code of CG in the Pakistani context of principal–principal conflict instead of the agent–principal explanation of agency theory based on Anglo–Saxon countries.

Originality/value

This research study has contributed to the CG and FBG literature in relation to EM in idiosyncratic settings of Pakistan. One of the prime contributions of the paper is the development of a comprehensive CG index. This research study used detailed, manually collected novel data on affiliated firms of FBGs in Pakistan.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the factors that influence young green actual consumption behavior (GACB) by examining the relational and technological aspects that are dependent on technology and youth green buying intention (GBI). Additionally, this study endeavors to examine the moderating effect of adolescent green organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) on the association between young consumer GBI and young GACB.

Design/methodology/approach

The data for this study was collected from a sample of 282 university students located in the southern region of China. A time lag approach was used in this study, with data being gathered during two separate intervals spaced apart by duration of two months.

Findings

The findings of this study demonstrate that both technological and relational factors play a significant role in predicting young consumer GBI, which in turn predicts young GACB. Additionally, the results indicate that GBI is a crucial facilitator in the investigation. Furthermore, the results reveal that young green OCB serves as a significant moderator, enhancing the association between young consumer GBI and young consumer GACB.

Originality/value

The present study provides a novel perspective on the examination of how technology and relational factors impact young consumers, offering a deeper understanding of their intentions and actual consumption behavior. The findings of this study offer both theoretical and practical implications for academics, policymakers, senior managers and practitioners, providing valuable insights into the field.
