Abstract

Presents a modification of Saniga′s model for joint economic design of process control parameters, i.e. sample size, sampling frequency and critical regions for X and R charts. The objective is to minimize the total system cost, which consists of the cost of sampling and charting, the cost of searching for and correcting the assignable causes of quality variation, the cost of downtime or production loss, and the cost of producing defective items which have to be reworked or scrapped. The modified model has been applied to control the internal profile milling of steam‐turbine blades. Highlights the saving potential of the optimum design of process control parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a theoretical model that leverages the practical wisdom of the Panch-Kosa framework of yogic philosophy to develop an awareness of spirituality in the organization. It also provides quasi-quantitative empirical evidence to demonstrate its potential application.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was designed and administered in four different organizations. Correlation, ANOVA and χ2 analysis were conducted to explore the applicability of the proposed framework.

Findings

The results indicate that values, as reflected in the physical aspects of an organization such as its logo, symbols and organizational elements characterized as “practice of Fair Governance” and “HR Effectiveness”, influence employee-related outcomes. Further, the study found that when there is a perfect “alignment” between an organization's intent to honor values and its corresponding actions, employees perceive the highest levels of holistic engagement.

Research limitations/implications

This study has an implication on how to leverage practical wisdom from Hindu philosophy to enable individuals and organizations to transform to a higher level of consciousness.

Originality/value

The paper has ventured into an uncharted territory of integrating the yogic framework of Panch-Kosa to the organizational elements and has provided preliminary support for its applicability in organizations. Moreover, it operationalizes the notion of alignment between organization's value-centric strategy and actions and its impact on employee-related outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

To identify the factors that need to be addressed by Indian industry to steeply ramp up its production and productivity in the coming years, so as to achieve the goal of the country becoming a 5 trillion dollar economy by 2025.

Design/methodology/approach

Lean Management Leaders in Indian Industry (LMLII), i.e. those companies in India who are well known for having adopted TQM, BE and Lean methods for many years, and achieved success in their business) in Indian industry were selected and surveys were done between 2013 and 2017, to assess the status of LM adoption, by using the LESAT (version 2.0) survey tool. A longitudinal empirical study has been done, over a period of five years, so that the identification of factors is based on a few years’ data rather than a one year, spot-check or snapshot view. A new method, titled the ‘Three Step Reverse Exploratory Factor Analysis Procedure (TSREP)’, has been attempted to identify the ‘root causes’.

Findings

LMLII's have improved in their adoption of LM over these years by about 10%. The root causes that can help in further advancement in adoption have been identified and classified under six component factors.

Research limitations/implications

The identification of LMLII's has been done based on the experience and views of experts in TQM/ BE/ Lean in India. Since this is a first of such study (viz., the term LMLII is being defined and used for the first time), this methodology has been adopted. However, in future, a systematic way to assess the criteria for LMLII's could be designed. Secondly, the sample size of LMLII's needs to be fully representative of the industry.

Practical implications

By using the results of this study, Indian companies can accelerate their LM adoption programmes, leading to quantum jumps in production and productivity, so as to achieve the 5 trillion USD economy by 2025. The practical implications are immense.

Social implications

Since LM is a bundle of Lean, TQM and BE, companies adopting LM will, due to the inclusion of waste reduction through 5S, JIT, kaizens and continuous improvement, address the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) protocol of the UN. TBL has comprehensive implications on society and environment, climate change and sustainability of business.

Originality/value

This work is original, at least in three ways. First, in the use of the concept of ‘LML’. Second, there is no previous longitudinal study done on Indian industry in LM. Third, the TSREP is being used for the first time. The value of this research is in its findings, in the identification of key factors for future growth and the use of a novel technique for improving upon the accuracy, analytical rigour and legitimacy of the results.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the corrosion behavior of the Zr59Nb3Al10Ni8Cu20 amorphous alloy in aqueous 1M, 6M and 11.5M HNO3 media using potentiodynamic polarization and weight loss determinations.

Design/methodology/approach

The electrochemical study, weight loss analysis and surface investigation were carried out on amorphous Zr59Nb3Al10Ni8Cu20 alloy that had been immersed in aqueous HNO3 medium at room temperature to understand the corrosion behavior of Zr-based amorphous Zr59Nb3Al10Ni8Cu20 alloy. The amorphous state of the alloy was investigated using X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical studies were carried out in aqueous 1M, 6M and 11.5M HNO3 media by recording open circuit potential/time and potentiodynamic polarization characteristics. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to examine the surface morphology of the alloy after the electrochemical tests and weight loss determinations.

Findings

The electrochemical results revealed that Ecorr values shifted toward more noble values, as the concentration of the nitric acid was increased, and this was attributed to the higher oxidizing power of the nitric acid. The higher value of corrosion current density was obtained for the Zr59Nb3Al10Ni8Cu20 amorphous alloy in aqueous 11.5M HNO3 medium at room temperature. The optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy examinations revealed that the formation of protective oxide layer on the surface of amorphous Zr59Nb3Al10Ni8Cu20 alloy leads to the improvement in the corrosion behavior in nitric acid medium at room temperature.

Originality/value

The results can be helpful in finding the suitable material for fuel reprocessing applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of scaling on the impact ionization and subthreshold current in submicron MOSFETs.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects of the various scaling techniques on a 100 nm device performances and the dependence of subthreshold current parameters on applied scaling technique are analyzed.

Findings

The results show that as the channel length is scaled down, multiplication factor increases slowly in the higher regime and rises rapidly in the lower regime of channel length. This result also justifies the inclusion of impact‐ionization effect on subthreshold current. The analysis shows that there is insignificant dependence of multiplication factor on the method of scaling. Similar variations in subthreshold current with channel length scaling have been observed in the analytical results for different scaling techniques.

Originality/value

The paper offers insight into the challenges of MOSFET scaling.
