Abstract
Having regard to the miscellaneous contents of these and other text books on the same subject, it is remarkable how definite a meaning the term “Strength of Materials” has come to have for engineers of all sorts. And yet what a curious title it is for their common stock‐in‐trade; what have pipes, beams, shafts and struts, which occupy much space in such books, to do with the strength of materials? But no engineer of to‐day—accustomed to the title of his Morley or his Timoshenko—would wish to make a change. And it seems a matter for regret, therefore, that the new book by Cormack and Andrew departs somewhat from custom by adding the word “Properties,” particularly as this might be taken to imply properties other than the mechanical ones primarily intended.

Abstract
Failures of security rarely touch users and it is easy to dismiss the subject as a purely technical one. With the increasing reliance on computers for business critical systems, and in the light of the fragility of trust online reliability is becoming an increasingly important issue. Information Assurance (IA) is a method for achieving reliability in computer systems, which has been developed out of traditional risk management concepts. For the consistency of behaviour IA requires there needs to be a security culture among users, a shared set of beliefs, values and behaviour. This paper discusses the nature of such a security culture and how it may be created.

Abstract
The papers in this volume look at security from a variety of viewpoints. Behind all the papers is the idea that security is important and that security can and should be improved. The papers ask some fairly fundamental questions and provide considerable food for thought. In this paper I am looking at the landscape and making an assumption that a change in culture as a result of better understanding of technology will result from increasing familiarity with technology and its limitations.

Abstract
Every new technology represents both an opportunity and a danger. The opportunity lies in being an early adopter, and embracing a new way of increasing efficiency and decreasing costs — basically a way to do something better. The danger lies in making a major investment, both in terms of time and money, in what may turn out to be a technology that isn't necessarily an innovation — something that may have been on the cutting edge but, in the end, just doesn't cut it.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of national identity, as imparted to students by the Western Australia Education Department, in the early part of the twentieth century. By specifically examining The School Paper, as a part of a broader investigation into the teaching of English, this paper interrogates the role “school papers” played in the formation of the citizen subject.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper draws on all available editions of Western Australia’s Education Department school reader, The School Paper, between 1909 and 1911, and on the Department’s Education Circular publication between the years 1899 and 1911. These are read within the context of the prevailing education philosophy, internationally and domestically, and the extent to which it was shaped by Australia’s cultural heritage and the desire to establish a national identity in the years post-federation.
Findings
The School Paper featured stories, poems, songs and articles that complimented the goals of the new education. Used in supplement to a revised curriculum weighted towards English classics, The School Paper, provided an important site for citizenship training. This publication pursued dual projects of constructing a specific Australian identity while defining a British imperial identity from which it is informed.
Originality/value
This research builds on scholarship on the role of school readers in other states in the construction of national identity and the formation of the citizen subject. It is the first research conducted into Western Australia’s school paper, the school reader, and provides a new lens through which to view how the processes of national/imperial identities are carried out and influenced by state-sanctioned study of English.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stressors involved in pre-qualification clinical psychology as reported by a sample of the UK trainee clinical psychologists. The main coping strategies reported by the trainees are also explored.
Design/methodology/approach
One-to-one interviews were conducted with 15 trainee clinical psychologists using qualitative research methods. Themes were established using the main principles of thematic analysis.
Findings
Three themes were identified that described the pressures involved in applying to the course, the support networks available to trainees, and the commonalities in their personal history, experiences and self-reported personality characteristics.
Originality/value
It is important to investigate the sources of stress and coping strategies in trainees to help them cope more effectively. The findings of the study are discussed within the context of clinical psychology training.
