Abstract
Purpose
A significant (8-18 per cent) proportion of higher education (HE) students in the UK are hosted by colleges. The quality of college HE provision has been questioned. The purpose of this paper is to present the case studies showing an HE ethos and student scholarship in a college environment from two levels of degree, three areas of science and contexts from submission to government consultations to tropical fieldwork, and from event organisation to volunteering.
Design/methodology/approach
Five case studies are presented, each of which was developed and delivered by a subset of the authors (see biographies for details). During delivery, individual staff developed opinions on the success of components of the approaches; these were discussed with co-deliverers, other authors/staff members and degree programme external examiners during the academic year. The information reported in this manuscript is a composite of these views.
Findings
All of the case studies were designed to have elements of HE ethos and student scholarship that contribute towards a high-quality student experience. The extensive links with potential employers and outside professionals help to ensure student engagement with real world issues and provide opportunities for individual enhancement, often through extracurricular activities.
Originality/value
The range of case studies presented here indicates the potential for engagement and enhancement in a college HE context; it also indicates the college-wide culture of progression and scholarship. Whilst the details are necessarily specific, the diversity of the case studies indicates the potential of the approaches outlined in other subjects.

Abstract
Research into the autonomous use of MP3 audio recorders by students in UK higher education demonstrated that students were innovative in their autonomous use of the devices. They used them to capture learning conversations from formal and informal situations to personalise and enhance their learning. However, today smartphones and other smart devices have replaced the necessity for students to carry multiple mobile devices including MP3 recorders. This chapter builds upon the earlier work and presents a small qualitative study into how students are autonomously using their smart devices to support their learning. The research explores the hypothesis that students are being innovative in the ways in which they are using their smart devices to support their formal and informal learning. The study involved five students who own smart devices who were invited to discuss their ownership of smartphone and tablet technologies and the ways they used them in their studies. The students first completed a short questionnaire and were then interviewed in small groups. The results agree with previous research into student use of smart devices and describe autonomous engagement facilitated by personally owned smart technologies. The study identifies continuous patterns of pervasive engagement by students and concludes that more thought should be given to disruptive innovation, digital literacy and employability.

Abstract
Strategic management research faces increasing calls concerning our work's relevance, reliability and credibility. Management journals have addressed these concerns by elevating the expectations for scholars during the publication process, such as publishing code, scripts and data. While the authors’ believe these changes are necessary for the field's long-term success, in the short term, there is a high resource cost for researchers (many with temporal constraints) to adjust to these new expectations. In this paper, the authors aim to decrease this cost on Strategic Management researchers in two ways. First, the authors discuss the vision, strengths and step-by-step instructions for the emerging code-sharing instrument – The SMART tool (Standardized Measures that are Accurate, Replicable and Time-saving, available at http://www.smartdatatool.net/) – for Strategic Management research. Second, the authors discuss some essential conditions for the tool's benefits to be fully realized by the field. Together, this paper offers the initial steps for creating a collaborative and open-source ecosystem for code and data in Strategic Management research that can strengthen stakeholder confidence in the field.

Abstract
New forms of ‘smart’ mobility have emerged with the advance of information technology. From a public sector perspective, these ambitions have been framed both in terms of innovation and sustainability. The development work of these technologies is in part being subsidised by public actors investing in and funding different types of pilots or experiments in order to ‘test’ these technologies in what is called a real-life environment. This is part of a larger trend of experimental governance in which smart mobility is an important and a possibly growing part. This chapter offers a conceptual analysis of experimental governance by analysing three underlying assumptions in literature and practice (1) the need for extraordinary solutions, (2) the importance of learning by doing and (3) the necessity of collaboration. These three assumptions are analysed in relation to smart mobility experiments in Sweden, and discussed in relation to public values. The concluding discussion elevates a number of normative implications of using experimental governance as a policy instrument for the development of smart mobility.

Abstract
This chapter presented the model for the effective practice of construction supply chain management (CSCM) in the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) era. The model was developed after discovering that the failure of adopting the 4IR component has hindered the synchronisation of construction supply chain (CSC) activities. While some stakeholders are willing to manage their CSC under the 4IR era, most have no clue how to go about it. Most stakeholders are familiar with an existing practice built around collaboration, integration, supply chain structure and trust. This chapter bridges the gap by introducing organisational culture and 4IR components for modelling the CSCM in the 4IR era. The model was backed and grounded with a robust theoretical framework. The theories include social identity theory, change theory and resource-based view theory. It was discovered that the organisational culture adopted by construction stakeholders determines their willingness to embrace the 4IR component for the management of CSC. The 4IR components were divided into smart management, virtualisation and cyber-physical systems. The chapter recommended that the practice of SCM in the Nigerian construction industry should be modelled around the six constructs that were used in developing the model for this study.

Abstract
Purpose
Previous studies have focused on explaining the developmental paths and the relevant skills necessary for smart factories, based on an extensive review of the literature. Unfortunately, there is a deficit of empirical analyses that present an in-depth overview of smart factory development. Although the literature supports the benefits of smart factories, it remains unclear whether there should be government intervention (GI) to facilitate or regulate such adoption. This study will provide an in-depth empirical analysis of smart factory adoption (SFA) and its role in manufacturing performance (MP) and sustainable manufacturing (SM).
Design/methodology/approach
This study used non-probability convenience and referral sampling techniques for data collection. This approach considered production managers from each company that participated in the survey questionnaire; thus, each production manager represented one firm. A total of 240 managers from several manufacturing companies participated in the study. This study employed direct and moderating hypotheses tested using PROCESS Macro, which Andrew Hayes developed for SPSS.
Findings
The study identified three fundamental elements of a smart factory: manufacturing big data (MBD), process automation (PA) and supply chain integration (SCI) and analyzed them individually to see how they affect MP. According to the results, building a smart factory has positive and significant impacts on MP and SM. Furthermore, this study explores the role of GI in promoting smart factory deployment for both production performance and sustainable production. The study found that GI did not have a significant moderating effect but did have a positive relationship with SM.
Research limitations/implications
This study contributes to the literature on smart factories by examining the impact of SFA on MP and SM. This provides a more comprehensive overview of the potential benefits of smart factories across various aspects, such as the application of big data, adoption of automation technology and integration of the supply chain. This study suggests that managers and decision-makers consider investing in smart factory implementation to improve factory productivity and enhance sustainability. Policymakers and government officials can promote the adoption of smart factories by providing incentives, funding, and resources to manufacturing firms.
Originality/value
There is a scarcity of research measuring the actual performance of manufacturing firms that have already adopted smart factories, and this study seeks to address this gap in the literature. This study focuses on the implementation of manufacturing big data, process automation and supply chain integration and how the adoption of these technologies improves MP and provides a SM environment by conducting a real-time study of manufacturing organizations. This study presents an initial effort to explore the role of government involvement in promoting smart factories.

Purpose
Studies showed that a proactive delivery system employing innovative artificial intelligence (AI) in urban services might perform better. This has become an important national policy for many countries. Thus, this study aims to explore the influence of AI in urban services in Malaysia.
Design/methodology/approach
Official documents such as Structure Plan and Government Transformation Programme Policy Document covering various levels of cities in Malaysia, articles related to urban studies mostly written by researchers regarding urban growth in Malaysia and the Urban Development Bulletin from the Federal Department of Town and Country Planning from 1957 to date were reviewed and analysed.
Findings
The findings show that the influence of AI in urban services has long existed and been carefully planned by local authorities since colonial times. The development of global digital technology influences the upgrading of AI in urban services in Malaysia. Also, the success of AI in these municipal services is influenced by the rate of information technology literacy among the urban population. These developments have led to the definition of a conceptual city.
Research limitations/implications
This paper's findings and conclusion were based on reviewed literature but did not compromise the strength of this paper. Thus, as part of the implications for future research, mixed-methods research design has been suggested.
Practical implications
As part of the implications, this article intends to promote AI in urban services in Malaysia and other developing countries with similar urban services challenges.
Originality/value
This paper encourages AI applications in urban services because it enhances service delivery performance. This intends to key stakeholders to promote AI via policies across Malaysia's urban services as part of the study implications.

Abstract
This chapter provides an introduction to the smart city and engages with its idea and ideals from a critical social science perspective. After setting out in brief the emergence of smart cities and current key debates, we note a number of practical, political, and normative questions relating to citizenship, social justice, and the public good that warrant examination. The remainder of the chapter provides an initial framing for engaging with these questions. The first section details the dominant neoliberal conception and enactment of smart cities and how this works to promote the interests of capital and state power and reshape governmentality. We then detail some of the more troubling ethical issues associated with smart city technologies and initiatives. Having set out some of the more troubling aspects of how social relations are produced within smart cities, we then examine how citizens and citizenship have been conceived and operationalized in the smart city to date. We then follow this with a discussion of social justice and the smart city. In the fifth section, we explore the notion of the “right to the smart city” and how this might be used to recast the smart city in emancipatory and empowering ways. Finally, we set out how the book seeks to answer our questions and extend our initial framing, exploring the extent to which the “right to the city” should be a fundamental principle of smart city endeavors.
