Abstract
JANET(the Joint Academic Network) is a wide‐area network linking together computers and users in British universities, polytechnics, establishments of the research councils, and the British Library. It provides for interactive working, file transfer, electronic mail and job transfer. Online access is possible to many catalogues of university and polytechnic libraries, the British Library's BLAISE‐LINE and ARTel services, and various bibliographic and numeric databases held on university computers. Users registered for electronic mail can use Janet to send this kind of mail to other sites in Britain, or overseas through the EARN, BITNET, and NORTHNET combined network. There are two‐way gateways between Janet and British Telecom network PDN, allowing access to commercial online hosts in Great Britain or overseas. These gateways can provide a faster and cheaper alternative to dial‐up use of PDN.

Abstract
Purpose
To review the variety of software solutions available for putting CDS/ISIS databases on the internet. To help anyone considering which route to take.
Design/methodology/approach
Briefly describes the characteristics, history, origin and availability of each package. Identifies the type of skills required to implement the package and the kind of application it is suited to. Covers CDS/ISIS Unix version, JavaISIS, IsisWWW, WWWISIS Versions 3 and 5, Genisis, IAH, WWW‐ISIS, and OpenIsis.
Findings
There is no obvious single “best” solution. Several are free but may require more investment in acquiring the skills to install and configure them. The choice will depend on the user's experience with CDS/ISIS formatting language, HTML, programming languages, operating systems, open source software, and so on.
Originality/value
There is detailed documentation available for most of these packages, but little previous guidance to help potential users to distinguish and choose between them.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to highlight indigenous and endogenous components of community capacity development through a focus on enterprise with renewed vigour and fervency attributable to local power elites and local collaboration and cooperation.
Design/methodology/approach
The twenty‐first century identifies good practices in many aspects of bottom‐up planning and implementation in neoliberal political economies. New Zealand is for many reasons, due to scale, skills and education, an example of endogenous development that is used globally for best practice studies. This paper specifically identifies and explores the local responses to the challenge of democracy and opportunities for diversification through tourism services provision on the Chatham Islands.
Findings
The paper notes that community capacity and governance on the Chathams has been the subject of discussion in recent years and the focus has been directed to conflicts in governance and possibly inappropriate policy and practice coordination. Although the refocus on endogenous development, empowerment and devolution of responsibility has a long pedigree in the context of the neoliberal economy, insufficient attention has been paid to the skills, inclination, social and economic capital for indigenous enterprise, more so in an environment of isolation, relative deprivation and dependence.
Originality/value
This paper highlights indigenous and endogenous components of community capacity development through a focus on enterprise with renewed vigour and fervency attributable to local power elites and local collaboration and cooperation. A useful model of indigenous tourism development and its endogenous antecedents is considered at the conclusion.

Abstract
Micro CDS/ISIS is a software package distributed by Unesco to non‐profit making organisations, free of charge. It is suitable for handling non‐numeric, variable length, textual information. This article studies the search interface of version 2.3 of the software in relation to user friendliness, user instructions, output control and documentation, in an evaluative manner with the objective of finding out whether Micro CDS/ISIS comfortably accommodates all kinds of users — novices, intermediates and the experienced. At the end, considering each and every aspect evaluated, it is concluded that Micro CDS/ ISIS is suitable more for experienced and intermediate users than for novices.

Abstract
The International Online Information Meetings are well established as the leading forums for both users and producers of online information services. In recent years, of course, CDROM has made its entrance to complement online, as a means for both accessing and presenting information. Among the sessions at Online Information 94, held in December last year, were three entitled respectively ‘Electronic access to fulltext’, ‘Multimedia and CD‐ROM applications’ and ‘Online information services’. Here we present abstracts of the papers presented at these sessions.

Abstract
Discusses the accreditation of the Avant Hotel, Oldham, Lancashire, UK, the first hotel registered to BS5750, the British Standard for quality procedures. Asserts that now people will know exactly what standard to expect. Outlines how the hotel′s accreditation came about and discusses problems with implementation and what is involved in maintaining the standard. Considers the effects of accreditation on staff and the benefits of maintaining BS5750. Concludes that competition is becoming more acute and guests are wanting value for money and the consistency which standard BS5750 registration ensures.
