Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this contribution is to present the structural constraints faced by the Cypriot tourism industry on its path to changing its product portfolio, previously dominated by the beach-tourism segment.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a heuristic approach, the current processes are viewed from the angle of the change from a Fordist to a post-Fordist production scheme.
Findings
The persistence of traditional governance and power structures hinder the transition and the emergence of new leadership structures and stakeholder interaction patterns.
Research limitations/implications
The limitations of this paper are that the findings are only preliminary because they result from a research project that is about to commence.
Originality/value
The paper is based on a fact-finding mission and deals with a topic that has transfer potential for other Mediterranean destinations.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper adopts a thematic approach to a review of the literature relating to seasonality in small island developing states.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper uses a qualitative approach by retrieving data from academic sources and official public documents from the Government of Cyprus. Thematic analysis is employed to provide information in relation to the numerical aspects of seasonality through statistics and the steps taken by official tourism authorities to alleviate seasonality.
Findings
The findings reveal a significant seasonality problem in Cyprus, especially in the high season months and stagnation during the low season months in winter. This causes problems at the national economic level and results in unemployment. However, in recent years, the government has been trying to tackle the problem by rebranding the destination for all seasons, offering a broad spectrum of varied activities, such as niche, special interest, and cultural tourism.
Originality/value
The paper offers a review-based perspective on seasonality in small island developing states and discusses the merits of developing all-year-round tourism.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper provides an overview and explains the context of the theme issue. The paper outlines the approach and profiles the articles written in response to the strategic question as to how the Republic of Cyprus could reduce the impact of seasonal tourism on long-term sustainable development.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper outlines the approach to exploring ways of reducing the impact of seasonal tourism on long-term sustainable development in Cyprus. The strategic question is tackled in articles containing literature reviews, data and evidence reviews, interactions with practitioners and practical solutions.
Findings
The findings of the theme issue focus on long-term sustainable development and the alleviation of seasonality in Cyprus. The issue provides insights into the history, current state of development and progress made by the impact of seasonal tourism and sustainable development on the tourism and hospitality industry.
Originality/value
This theme issue outlines the causes and effects of seasonality in the tourism industry in a small island developing state (SIDS) that is highly dependent on income generated by tourism activity. In SIDS, where seasonality is a threatening factor for tourism development, it is essential to understand what measures can be taken to lower seasonality. The articles in this theme issue provide insights into the causes and effects of tourism seasonality, climate change, alternative and special interest tourism, future destinations and young travellers' behaviour, air transportation, the remedy to seasonality and gastro tourism.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to identify pitfalls in the use of cooperation for the implementation of digital applications in rural cultural tourism marketing and derive practical implications for avoiding them.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 14 semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with the participants of the cooperation project around the Web app “The Legend of the Call of the Mountain” in the Zugspitz Region in Germany.
Findings
The study has identified four key pitfalls: challenges in the long-term financing, destination-specific characteristics of rural areas, doubts about the use of evaluations and the limited horizon of many cultural institutions.
Research limitations/implications
Because of the qualitative approach and the single case study, the results may lack generalisability. Therefore, future research should place the results to a larger scale, for example, with a mixed methods approach.
Practical implications
Practical implications can be derived from the study for avoiding pitfalls and thus for a successful use of such cooperation projects. The implications draw attention to the different possibilities of long-term financing, the important role of a central tourism organisation, the special possibilities of evaluations and the important role of general awareness raising for the added values of such cooperation.
Originality/value
By examining an exemplary cooperation project, the paper fills an existing research gap, as there has been little knowledge in empirical cultural tourism research about the special conditions for using cooperation to implement digital applications in rural cultural tourism marketing.
