Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to trace the performance consequences of within-lead firm reconfigurations of global value chains with respect to business performance and upgrading.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on two detailed company case studies which are analysed in an organizational design approach.

Findings

Lead firms systematically separate and internalize high value-added activities in otherwise low value-added processes leading to constant reconfigurations and reorganizations of the production processes in global value chains. The study finds that similar reconfigurations may trigger different changes and changes and performance consequences may differ considerably according to the level of analysis. The two cases help to understand the specific roles of the outsourcing and offshoring decisions in shaping actual global value chain structures.

Originality/value

The consequences of within-lead firm reconfigurations are rarely analysed in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

In today’s turbulent environment, it is important that companies effectively leverage resources available both in-house and in their interorganizational ties. The purpose of this study is to focus on technology as a key resource and aims to analyse contextual factors of the relationship between the technological heterogeneity of suppliers and the buyer firm’s short- and long-term performance in a dynamic approach.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper applies a mixed-method approach. The theoretical model has been developed based on extant literature, validated by a workshop with practitioners, and tested using structural equation modelling on a sample of 157 companies.

Findings

Suppliers’ technological heterogeneity has a significant positive effect on both the buyer’s actual business performance and its research and development capability. Business performance captures the short term, while the long-term performance implications of heterogeneity are understood as a precondition for future, technology-based competitiveness. The results show that both short- and long-term consequences are mediated by the buyer’s supply chain management efforts (SCMEs), while the relationship between technological heterogeneity and these efforts is moderated by the buyer’s networking capability (NC).

Research limitations/implications

This study provides the first evidence of potential long-term positive performance consequences of technologically heterogeneous suppliers. Additionally, it develops new insights into how the internal abilities of the focal firm might facilitate or hinder the positive implications of such heterogeneity. Specifically, the role of the buyer’s SCMEs and its NC is analysed. Industry-specific analyses offer new opportunities for future scholarship and future studies could extend research with other contextual factors.

Practical implications

Managers at different levels of the buyer firm should be aware of the organizational capabilities through which they can leverage the potential embedded in technologically heterogeneous suppliers. The results contribute to this understanding, which is especially important when a change in the environment (and the consequent changes in the level of technological heterogeneity) is constant.

Originality/value

This paper reflects on an important critique of the extant literature by applying a dynamic approach. Dynamization is twofold. Firstly, this study does not limit empirical analysis to short-term performance consequences. Secondly, this study discusses contextual factors that capture some aspects of the buyer’s ability to dynamically adapt to the changing environment. SCMEs align the supply chain of the buyer along customer requirements that change over time, while the NC is responsible for the ongoing reconfiguration of the supplier’s base.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate leadership attributes that contribute to or inhibit the successful adaptation of lean techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

Using leadership attributes of the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) project, this paper develops an ideal leadership profile of a production manager who aims to develop a lean production system (based on Liker’s seminal work in 2004). Five hypotheses related to contributor and inhibitor leadership behaviors and their associated leadership attributes are analyzed using survey data based on a PLS model.

Findings

According to the results, the proposed conceptual leadership profile, in which leadership attributes are divided into two sets (contributors and inhibitors), required modification. The authors identified five distinct leadership behaviors (specific interrelated sets of leadership attributes). Two of the five leadership behaviors (communicative and micromanager) for production managers contributed to lean implementation. None of the leadership behaviors were inhibitors. Surprisingly, a theoretical inhibitor type of leadership behavior, namely micromanager, proved to be a contributor.

Practical implications

The results provide direct guidance for Hungarian managers with leadership behaviors that can contribute to the successful adaptation of lean techniques. However, managers must also consider that although these leadership behaviors may result in short-term gains, the micromanager leadership behavior can undermine the long-term sustainability of lean success and can hinder the development of a lean culture.

Originality/value

Leaders are frequently considered to be the key drivers of lean management. The empirical paper is unique because it analyzes the relationship among leadership behaviors, leadership attributes, and lean contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

A clinical pathway for patients with acute ischemic stroke was implemented in 2014 by one Italian teaching hospital multidisciplinary team. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether this clinical pathway had a positive effect on patient management by comparing performance data.

Design/methodology/approach

Volume, process and outcome indicators were analyzed in a pre-post retrospective observational study. Patients’ (admitted in 2013 and 2015) medical records with International Classification of Diseases, ICD-9 code 433.x (precerebral artery occlusion and stenosis), 434.x (cerebral artery occlusion) and 435.x (transient cerebral ischemia) and registered correctly according to hospital guidelines were included.

Findings

An increase context-sensitive in-patient numbers with more severe cerebrovascular events and an increase in patient transfers from the Stroke to Neurology Unit within three days (70 percent, p=0.25) were noted. Clinical pathway implementation led to an increase in patient flow from the Emergency Department to dedicated specialized wards such as the Stroke and Neurology Unit (23.7 percent, p<0.001). Results revealed no statistically significant decrease in readmission rates within 30 days (5.7 percent, p=0.85) and no statistically significant differences in 30-day mortality.

Research limitations/implications

The pre-post retrospective observational study design was considered suitable to evaluate likely changes in patient flow after clinical pathway implementation, even though this design comes with limitations, describing only associations between exposure and outcome.

Originality/value

Clinical pathway implementation showed an overall positive effect on patient management and service efficiency owing to the standardized application in time-dependent protocols and multidisciplinary/integrated care implementation, which improved all phases in acute ischemic stroke care.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show how it is possible to take into account the objectives that fashion-luxury companies pursue on the final market (i.e. critical success factors (CSF) – of luxury) and propagate them in the upstream steps of the supply chain (SC) in order to understand how the latter can be aligned to the market.

Design/methodology/approach

An extensive literature review allowed the identification of SC objectives. Case studies were used in order to asses choices and practices applied along the SC of luxury companies were assessed through in depth case studies; hence, the relationship between choices/practices, SC objectives and luxury CSF was explored.

Findings

The paper documents that success in the luxury market not only depends on branding and marketing but also on the choices made along the SC, to the point that it is possible to identify some SC choices and practices that support the achievement of luxury CSF.

Research limitations/implications

The results presented represent a useful guideline and offer some methodological suggestions; however, the precise set of SC objectives have to be tailored on each specific brand, according to the uniqueness that characterizes luxury companies.

Practical implications

The paper suggests which areas of the SC should be mostly targeted in order to achieve success in the luxury market, also indicating some possible concrete choices.

Originality/value

The main value of this paper consists in shaping a first explicit connection among the world of luxury as it is perceived by the consumers and the world of the SC.
