Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develope an integrated image processing method to investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of Phragmites invasion in the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge on the basis of publically available sources.

Design/methodology/approach

This new approach integrates the standard time-series analysis of Landsat images with USDA National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery and USGS Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quads (DOQQ) datasets, which are either classified or manually interpreted with the aid of ground control points. Three different types of spatiotemporal dimensions are designed to test this integrated time-series image analysis method: the selected sites and selected time-points with high spatial resolution and sufficient validation data points, the intermediate time-series with continued yearly images and periodical validation data, and the long time-series with periodical images without enough validation data. The support vector machine (SVM) method was used to classify the Landast TM sequence images to detect the Phragmites invasion.

Findings

The habitat map produced by NAIP images and field collection data shows that the total Phragmites area of DRIWR in 2010 is 4221.87 acres without treatment areas and similar with the removed non-vegetation method. It is confirmed that the pre-classification method can obtain more accurate results.

Originality value

The test results show that the Landsat-5 data can be used for long-term environmental management and monitoring of Phragmites invasion and can achieve rehabilitation of invasion areas.

Abstract

Purpose

Compared with the low-fidelity model, the high-fidelity model has both the advantage of high accuracy, and the disadvantage of low efficiency and high cost. A series of multi-fidelity surrogate modelling method were developed to give full play to the respective advantages of both low-fidelity and high-fidelity models. However, most multi-fidelity surrogate modelling methods are sensitive to the amount of high-fidelity data. The purpose of this paper is to propose a multi fidelity surrogate modelling method whose accuracy is less dependent on the amount of high-fidelity data.

Design/methodology/approach

A multi-fidelity surrogate modelling method based on neural networks was proposed in this paper, which utilizes transfer learning ideas to explore the correlation between different fidelity datasets. A low-fidelity neural network was built by using a sufficient amount of low-fidelity data, which was then finetuned by a very small amount of HF data to obtain a multi-fidelity neural network based on this correlation.

Findings

Numerical examples were used in this paper, which proved the validity of the proposed method, and the influence of neural network hyper-parameters on the prediction accuracy of the multi-fidelity model was discussed.

Originality/value

Through the comparison with existing methods, case study shows that when the number of high-fidelity sample points is very small, the R-square of the proposed model exceeds the existing model by more than 0.3, which shows that the proposed method can be applied to reducing the cost of complex engineering design problems.

Abstract

Purpose

Fabric defect detection plays an important role in textile quality control. The purpose of this paper is to propose a fabric defect detection algorithm using learned dictionary-based visual saliency.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the test fabric image is splitted into image blocks, and the learned dictionary with normal samples and defective sample is constructed by selecting the image block local binary pattern features with highest or lowest similarity comparing with the average feature vector; second, the first L largest correlation coefficients between each test image block and the dictionary are calculated, and other correlation coefficients are set to zeros; third, the sum of the non-zeros coefficients corresponding to defective samples is used to generate saliency map; finally, an improve valley-emphasis method can efficiently segment the defect region.

Findings

Experimental results demonstrate that the generated saliency map by the proposed method can efficiently outstand defect region comparing with the state-of-the-art, and segment results can precisely localize defect region.

Originality/value

In this paper, a novel fabric defect detection scheme is proposed via learned dictionary-based visual saliency.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to empirically explore the influence of independent directors (non-executive directors) on the market risks of the Indian banks.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is based on the data collected over a period of seven years (2009-2016) for a set of 29 Indian banks that are the constituents of the National Stock Exchange 500 Index. The data for independent directors of the sample banks are extracted from the annual reports of the banks, whereas the data relating to the dependent and control variables are compiled from the Ace equity and the Reserve Bank of India databases. The study uses the panel data method for analysis of the collected data for the sample banks.

Findings

This study concludes that independent directors increase the market risks for Indian banks (measured through equity beta).

Originality/value

This is, perhaps, the first paper to look into the impact of independent directors on the market risks of Indian banks. The policymakers and banks may need to be aware of the risk implications of the findings of the study in the Indian context, such that the independent directors enable their banks in reducing the market risks.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relative importance of the five dimensions and 17 associated pillars of the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) to understand their contributions to overall tourism competitiveness.

Design/methodology/approach

Using Bayesian Belief Networks (BBNs), this study analyzes data from 2024 for 119 countries to model the interactions between the dimensions and pillars of the TTDI. The BBN approach allows for a probabilistic understanding of how these elements influence tourism competitiveness.

Findings

The analysis reveals that “infrastructure and services” and “information and communication technology (ICT) readiness” play a critical role in enhancing tourism competitiveness. This study underscores the interconnectedness of various tourism factors, highlighting how strategic emphasis on these key areas can drive overall success in the sector.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature by empirically validating the factors that significantly impact tourism competitiveness. This study provides actionable insights for policymakers and industry leaders to enhance tourism development through a robust, data-driven framework that supports sustainable tourism management.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate if earnings management affects the trades of different investors prior to earnings announcements.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a unique account-level trading data set from the Chinese stock market, the author investigates the different investor trading patterns prior to earnings announcements.

Findings

The author obtains direct evidence to show that: first, institutional investors, particularly active ones, tend to sell (buy) stocks before negative (positive) earnings surprises; second, institutional investors buy stocks intensively with the lowest earnings management and the highest earnings surprises, and the trading patterns are primarily driven by active institutions. No significant trading pattern is observed on the stocks with negative earnings surprises; and third, the author uses a natural experiment in accordance with the Chinese accounting standards reform to address endogeneity, and the causality of the results still holds.

Originality/value

The findings provide clear evidence by emphasizing the importance of earnings management in the formulation of investor decisions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the behaviour of retail investors while making an investment decision and how it gets affected by the behavioural biases of the investors using a moderated-mediation framework.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed method approach has been used to fulfil the objectives of the study. In the first study, a qualitative analysis of the interviews with 15 retail investors was conducted. As part of the quantitative study, a total of 201 responses from Indian retail investors were collected using systematic sampling and analysed using structural equation modelling and Process Macro.

Findings

The results indicate that anchoring bias, availability bias, herding bias, switching cost, sunk cost, regret avoidance and perceived threat have a significant effect on retail investors’ investing intention. The attitude of the investors towards investing decisions mediates the effects of behavioural bias and the status quo on investment intention. The results of the moderated-mediation analysis indicate that mediating effect of attitude varied at the low and high-risk aversion of investors.

Practical implications

The findings of this study will help regulators and retail investors to understand the critical behavioural biases which affect the investors’ investing intention.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to the literature on investors’ behaviour, status quo bias theory (SQB) and behavioural bias. This study uniquely proposes a moderated-mediation framework to understand the effects of biases on retail investors’ investment intention.
