Abstract

Seeing women experts in action helps build up women's credibility as leaders and experts in a wider range of fields than traditional ‘women's work’, but it is all too infrequent to find women with authority appearing in the media. Hoping to put this right is a new campaign to gather and promote women as experts, through the media of radio and television.

Abstract

The Government argues that controversial proposals to give men as well as women time off for child care would mean recruiting and training staff to cover for short‐term absences, and have serious consequences in higher management functions. It is also claimed that the costs to industry, financially and administratively, would be prohibitive. On the other hand, parental leave would also create jobs, increase access to training, radically improve women's job prospects and fall into line with the trend towards flexible working.

Abstract

Whereas most societal commentators continue to review the historical patterns of men’s leadership in search of models for 21st-century success, few have begun to recognize, let alone appreciate, the equivalent patterns of women’s leadership and the future contributions that women could potentially make as leaders. What could and are women bringing to society as global leaders? Why at this moment in history is there such a marked increase in the number of women leaders? Are we entering an era in which both male and female leaders will shape history, both symbolically and in reality? And if so, will we discover that women, on average, lead in different ways than men, or will we learn that role (global leader) explains more than gender? This chapter reveals the accelerating trends of women joining men in senior leadership positions, establishes the relationship of women leaders to our overall understanding of global leadership, and sets forth an agenda to accomplish much needed research and understanding.

Abstract

Purpose

This study analyses how latent variables: environmental hostility, entrepreneurial orientation and dynamic capabilities are demonstrated in practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. Coming from mixed-method research, which is an explanatory sequential research design; this paper aims to provide only the qualitative, practical manifestations and validations of the variables previously tested and analysed quantitatively.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study approach was used whereby open-ended, semi-structured series of interviews was conducted to extract narratives from two owner–managers of medium-scale manufacturer-exporter agro-processing firms in the Philippines. Thematic analysis using deductive reasoning was used to analyse the collected narratives.

Findings

The analysis showed qualitative evidence of a possible intervention of entrepreneurial orientation and dynamic capabilities between the effects of the hostile environment brought about by the pandemic on the firms’ export performance. In addition, organisational resilience was observed to possibly moderate the relationship between the firm’s entrepreneurial orientation and dynamic capabilities. Resilience takes time (years) to develop; with an entrepreneurial behaviour, a continuous enhancement and acquisition of resources, capabilities, knowledge reflects a robust and adaptive organisation during adversity.

Social implications

The role of education and research institutions was highlighted in the development of dynamic capabilities of firms. The entrepreneurial resilience, however, reflects the individual characteristic of the owner–managers that manifests in the firm’s overall posture toward the overall goal of protecting the industry from its downfall.

Originality/value

Qualitative evidences composed of direct experiences from key informants served valuable and contextual (Philippine agro-processing industry) validations to the theoretical relationships of variables being analysed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the influence of pantyhose color on the visually perceived surface roughness of a pantyhose covered leg, and to examine the resultant evaluation index.

Design/methodology/approach

A sensory evaluation of the visually perceived surface roughness of a leg model with typical pantyhose of various colors and apparent yarn count was performed among Japanese females along with a statistical analysis. The relationship between the visually perceived surface roughness of the leg with pantyhose and the characteristics of the visual information of the pantyhose which was obtained by image analysis were investigated.

Findings

The color of the pantyhose had a clear influence on the visually perceived surface roughness of a leg with pantyhose. The characteristics of the visual information of the leg with pantyhose, namely, the shape of the histogram on the luminance distribution proved to be useful as the evaluation index of the visually perceived surface roughness.

Originality/value

Development of a novel pantyhose with superior aesthetic performance that meets the requirements of the wearer can be expected to lead to an improvement in the quality and performance of hosiery. This paper provides the quantification of aesthetic performance of pantyhose.
