Abstract

Purpose

The particle distribution in a fluid is mostly not homogeneous. The inhomogeneous dispersion of solid particles affects the velocity profile as well as the heat transfer of fluid. This study aims to highlight the effects of varying density of particles in a fluid. The fluid flows through a wavy curved passage under an applied magnetic field. Heat transfer is discussed with variable thermal conductivity.

Design/methodology/approach

The mathematical model of the problem consists of coupled differential equations, simplified using stream functions. The results of the time flow rate for fluid and solid granules have been derived numerically.

Findings

The fluid and dust particle velocity profiles are being presented graphically to analyze the effects of density of solid particles, magnetohydrodynamics, curvature and slip parameters. Heat transfer analysis is also performed for magnetic parameter, density of dust particles, variable thermal conductivity, slip parameter and curvature. As the number of particles in the fluid increases, heat conduction becomes slow through the fluid. Increase in temperature distribution is noticed as variable thermal conductivity parameter grows. The discussion of variable thermal conductivity is of great concern as many biological treatments and optimization of thermal energy storage system’s performance require precise measurement of a heat transfer fluid’s thermal conductivity.

Originality/value

This study of heat transfer with inhomogeneous distribution of the particles in a fluid has not yet been reported.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to deal with the heat transmission of Sutterby fluid-containing gyrotactic microorganism by incorporating non-Darcy resistance law. The mathematical modeling is based on nanoparticle concentration, energy, momentum and motile microorganism equations.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing nonlinear coupled equations are first rendered into nonlinear ordinary equations using appropriate transformation and are then solved analytically by using the optimal homotopy.

Findings

Graphical illustration of results depict the behavior of flow involved physical parameters on temperature, gyrotactic microorganism, concentration and velocity. Additionally, local Nusselt number and skin friction coefficient are computed numerically and validated through comparison with existing literature as a special case of proposed model. It is found that the temperature profile decreases by increasing values of Brownian-motion parameter and Prandtl number. An increase in thermophoresis parameter and Schmidt number results in decrease in concentration of nanoparticles. Bioconvection Peclet number corresponds to decreasing behavior of nondimensional gyrotactic microorganism field is observed. Finally, a comparison with the existing literature is made, and an excellent agreement is seen.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect of Powell–Eyring fluid induced by a stretched sheet. Heat and mass transfer under the influence of magnetic dipole over a stretching sheet are taken into account.

Design/methodology/approach

Nonlinear coupled governing equations are solved using the optimal homotopy asymptotic technique, and a computer software package BVPh 2.0 is used for numerical computations.

Findings

Impact of significant quantities is graphically examined. It is seen that the heat transfer deceases for higher values of viscous dissipation parameter, radiation parameter, Dufour number, whereas it increases for bigger values of Prandtl number. The numerical results have been validated through comparison with existing literature as a special case of proposed model and perceived that the Soret number has reining role to increase the rate of heat transfer.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is reported for the first time.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effect of two-dimensional Darcy-Forchheimer flow over second-grade fluid with linear stretching. Heat transfer through convective boundary conditions is taken into account.

Design/methodology/approach

Nonlinear coupled governing equations are tackled with a homotopy algorithm, while for numerical computation the computer software package BVPh 2.0 is used. The convergence analysis is also presented for the validation of analytical and numerical results.

Findings

Valuation for the impact of key parameters such as variable thermal conductivity, Dufour and Soret effects and variable magnetic field in an electrically conducted fluid on the velocity, concentration and temperature profiles are graphically illustrated. It is observed from the results that temperature distribution rises by Dufour number whereas concentration distribution rises by Soret number. The Forchheimer number and porosity parameter raise the skin friction coefficient. The permeable medium has a vital impact and can help in reining the rate of heat transfer.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on micro-businesses owned by women borrowers of microfinance institutions and to provide policy suggestions to assist women entrepreneurs in managing such an unexpected crisis from a qualitative perspective within developing countries such as Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopts a qualitative research design to explore the impact of COVID-19 on women’s entrepreneurial activities. Seven women entrepreneurs were selected and semi-structured interviews with focused group discussion under case study research design are used. Thereby providing a contemporary view of the issues faced by women entrepreneurs in the period of huge social and economic upheaval.

Findings

The results provide valuable insights about how the COVID-19 crisis affected women entrepreneurs by particularly considering household income, business sales, lifestyle and mental health. The liquidation of women-led businesses indicated the necessity to reconsider creativity and digitalization for business survival. Moreover, the results also revealed that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the physical, mental and economic well-being of women highlights the need for considering gender gap issues in forming response policies for COVID-19 in developing countries.

Originality/value

As the COVID-19 crisis is a recent and existing phenomenon, this study is among the first to explore particularly the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on micro-enterprises mainly owned and managed by women. Thereby claiming that COVID-19 not only physically but also psychologically affected women entrepreneurs. Moreover, the study highlights a need of skill focused training programs for women entrepreneurs to make sure that they can protect their businesses during such difficult times.

Abstract

Purpose

Bullying is an uncontrolled incident in today's global workplace and widely recognized as a major issue that has to be explained, addressed and resolved, both from a research and management aspect. However, it has a devastating impact on teacher performance thus a need to study its impact is crucial and integral. The study's purpose is to look into the impact of workplace bullying (WB) on work engagement (WE), as well as the influence of emotional exhaustion (EE) and psychological distress (PD) as mediators. Further, the study analyzed the role of emotional intelligence (EI) as a moderator for teacher's psychological distress and work engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative approach was employed using 63 items and a 7-point Likert scale questionnaire administered to 366 teachers working in schools located in Islamabad. Data has been collected with the time lag method. Confirmatory Factor Analysis is employed to estimate factors whereas Structural Equation Modeling is executed to test hypotheses by using AMOS-23.

Findings

Results suggest that workplace bullying is significantly related to work engagement and this relationship is partially mediated by emotional exhaustion and psychological distress. Further, it confirmed the role of emotional intelligence as a moderator between psychological distress and work engagement.

Research limitations/implications

First of all, single-source data has been used (responses collected from teachers) which may raise issues regarding CMB thus, future studies might collect data at different levels for better generalizability. Secondly, the study is based on a convenience sampling technique thus the hypothesized model may not be generalized to the entire population. Thirdly, the study found four variables in total to measure the effect on work engagement, therefore, individual characteristics or personality traits can better capture the notion.

Practical implications

The finding of the study would be helpful for the educational sector as they are playing an integral part in our society and such dilemmas need to be addressed with possible solutions.

Originality/value

This is one of the few studies which measure the mediator and moderator both consecutively in measuring workplace bullying and work engagement in the educational sector of Pakistan.

Abstract

Purpose

Child malnutrition is a grave concern for Pakistan, as the country has one of the highest incidences of child stunting in the developing world. The present study examines the relative significance of parents' education on a child's nutritional status in Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

For analysis, the study has used data from Phase 7 of the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS) (2017–2018). Since the dependent variable ranges from 0 to 1 (1 indicates not a stunted child, while 0 represents a stunted child), binary logistic regressions are used for the analysis.

Findings

The results show that mothers' and fathers' education positively contributes to a child's nutrition. However, mothers' education is considered more significant, especially in the long run. The mother's education categories are positive and significant in the long run, while only their higher education is positive and significant for the father's. Moreover, the magnitude of the effect also shows that the probability of stunting is less if the mothers are educated. The long-run coefficient for mothers' higher education is 0.752, while that of fathers' higher education is only 0.232.

Originality/value

The present study compares the importance of mothers' and fathers' education in child nutrition and concludes that the role of the mother is more crucial for child upbringing. There are rarely any studies that focus on the role of fathers' education in child nutrition and compare whose role, mothers' or fathers,' is more important for child well-being.

Abstract

Purpose

The present research aims to empirically test the “Barriers to abusive supervision model” to find how employee-related (core self-evaluations) and situational factors (perceived job dependency) make an employee trapped in the spiral of supervisory abuse. In addition, the work–family spillover lens is used to explain how employees' retaliation is targeted at their families in response to abuse from their bosses.

Design/methodology/approach

The current study has employed a three-wave longitudinal moderated mediation design and analysed data from 265 employees working in the hospitality industry of Pakistan.

Findings

The results of this study have shown that low core-self evaluations put employees in a spiral of supervisory abuse and they instil aggression towards their families. This association is further strengthened when employees are dependent on their job.

Originality/value

This study is one of the first to use the “Barriers to Abusive supervision” model to answer who and in which conditions tend to trap in the spiral of abuse and integrate the work-to-family interface model for elaborating the outcomes to the family domain.

Purpose

Despite noted instances of organizational cronyism in public sector Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs), there is a lack of empirical evidence on its detrimental outcomes. The present investigation tested the impact of organizational cronyism on knowledge hiding via the mediating role of moral disengagement and moderating role of egoistic climate.

Design/methodology/approach

A multi-stage random sample was drawn from the 312 teaching faculty working in HEIs of Lahore, Pakistan in three waves. M-plus was used to validate a longitudinal moderated mediation model based on Structural Equation Modeling.

Findings

The results showed that organizational cronyism leads to knowledge hiding. In addition, it was substantiated that moral disengagement acts as a mediator in the relationship between organizational cronyism and knowledge hiding. The strengthening impact of an egoistic climate was found in the direct and indirect association between organizational cronyism, moral disengagement, and knowledge hiding.

Originality/value

There is a dearth of research on the consequences of organizational cronyism and the understanding of the factors that underlie this association is limited. This research has bridged this gap by investigating the role of moral disengagement and egoistic climate in linking organizational cronyism and knowledge-hiding by building on social exchange and social cognitive theory.
