Abstract

THE performance of civil aircraft having pure jet engines as opposed to turbine‐propeller engines will be considered since it is thought that for the latter the methods usually adopted for piston‐engined aircraft are on the whole applicable. It will be assumed that the performance of the jet engine (i.e. its thrust and fuel consumption at various r.p.m., forward speeds and altitudes) is given and that the aerodynamic properties of the aircraft in its various configurations are known.

Abstract

In this chapter, we explore gender equity issues in relation to the governance of sport in Wales. Our focus is primarily on Sport Wales (SW), the national agency responsible for developing and promoting sport and physical activity in Wales and for distributing National Lottery and Welsh Government funding. As a public authority, SW has a statutory responsibility to promote equality and eliminate direct and indirect discrimination. Their recent policy commitments express a desire to advance equality and promote inclusion and diversity within sports organisations in Wales. They also set the agenda for National Governing Bodies (NGBs) in Wales, in terms of providing a policy framework for understanding and pursuing gender equity in sport and sport governance. In this chapter, we present a snapshot of the governance and leadership policy landscape for Welsh sport, with a specific focus on gender equity. We present data collected from publicly available online policy documents relating to SW, and their NGB partners, relevant to gender equity provision. Based on the data, we suggest that there is evidence of progress in terms of the numbers of women on boards in Wales as well as the creation of gender equity policies within NGBs in Wales. We argue, however, that progress is inconsistent across the different NGBs in Wales, and it is less clear whether sport governing bodies can implement policies to effectively challenge organisational culture and ethos. We concluded by suggesting future Wales specific research priorities on this topic.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

LOUGHBOROUGH was the first of the post‐war schools to be established in 1946. This resulted from negotiations of representatives of the Library Association Council with technical and other colleges which followed their failure to secure facilities within the universities on the terms of the L.A. remaining the sole certificating body. The late Dr. Herbert Schofield accepted their terms and added a library school to already varied fields of training within his college.

A handsome new headquarters for Huntingdon County Library was opened on September 24 by Lord Butler. The building comprises two main elements: a two storey circular block for the public services, and a single storey administrative wing with ancillary accommodation. A gramophone record library is installed for the first time in the service. Floor area: 16,000 square feet; total building cost £114,000, plus £9,000 for the site and £9,000 for furniture.

Abstract

The effect of the Merchandise Marks Act, 1953, on habits and customs in the food and drug trades may prove greater than is immediately obvious. The scope of the earlier Merchandise Marks Acts (1887 to 1938) is greatly widened, first by their extension to trade descriptions which are “misleading”, and, secondly, by roping in trade descriptions of quality and descriptions of “fitness for purpose, strength, performance or behaviour ”. The standard of “quality” is to be based on “a classification commonly used or recognised in the trade”. These extensions are to come into effect on January 31st, 1954. Meanwhile, manufacturers of food and drugs may well need to reconsider the wording of their advertisements and labels—for there is no exemption in favour of what has hitherto passed as legitimate, if somewhat exaggerated, puffing. Manufacturers of proprietary medicines, in particular, and of special brands of infants' and invalids' foods may need to exercise more restraint if they are to keep on the right side of the law—though it is, of course, a fact that peaceful persuasion by the Labelling Division of the Ministry of Food during the past ten years has accomplished much by securing the modification of extravagant claims which might be held by a court of law to be misleading.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the controversial repeal of legislation requiring UK companies to disclose an Operating and Financial Review (OFR). After a lengthy period of consultation and the preparation of a reporting standard, legislation was passed in March 2005 requiring UK listed companies to disclose a separate statement of management commentary, an OFR. In November 2005 the Chancellor unexpectedly and controversially announced the repeal of the OFR during a speech to the largest business lobbying group in the UK.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis draws upon internal, private governmental documents prepared by the Treasury ministry to brief the Chancellor, publicly disclosed as a result of a legal challenge against the repeal decision.

Findings

The paper describes how Treasury officials were motivated to seek deregulatory opportunities in order to gain political support for their head, Prime Minister-in-waiting, Gordon Brown. The analysis reveals how the repeal of the OFR was identified as an example of corporate deregulation, and how this perception proved to be misplaced following the reaction to the repeal decision which led to the government reinstating many OFR requirements in an enhanced Business Review in 2006.

Originality/value

The paper draws on the conception of “3-D” power to analyse how a political ideology prevalent in the pre-financial crisis environment came to influence accounting technology with unexpected consequences. Using data rarely disclosed in the public domain, it illuminates the “black boxed” processes underlying regulatory decision making. The paper details how the Treasury were politically motivated to influence corporate reporting policy in the absence of concerted political lobbying, and why this episode of government intervention led to an unanticipated regulatory outcome.
