Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the reality of environmental management as experienced by an Algerian company while in the process of being certified.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach adopted focuses on how the environmental dimension is perceived by the wage earners of the company. The perception of the environmental dimension is highlighted by means of a statistical analysis supported by the use of data processing software.

Findings

The results show that all staff categories agree that the environmental aspect is to some extent neglected compared to other aspects and that production comes at the forefront.

Practical implications

The analysis of the results highlights the course that should be followed by any Algerian company, such as the one selected in our study, in order to implement the ISO 14001 certification successfully.

Originality/value

The interesting focus of the paper is in the human aspect, which plays a major role in any successful environmental management system

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to suggest a methodological approach of eco‐conception by presenting the eco‐conception stakes of a firm, its organisation modes with regard to this new approach and how one could insert the environmental data in the classical conception process.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, an eco‐conception methodology is developed. It is about an approach integrating the concepts: quality, safety and environment (QSE). The taking into account simultaneously of these concepts, in the frame of our approach, allows us to conceive clean and durable products. The failure modes effects and criticality analysis (FMECA) was used in a case study to validate our approach.

Findings

This paper is a development of an approach with results obligation. Owing to our eco‐conception approach of products, the respect of environment is taken into consideration at the stage of product design. From regulation point of view, we put into reflection the approach with results obligation, i.e. approach by objectives of QSE.

Practical implications

A better definition of products implying functional specifications (products performance) strengthened by others of environmental type. As expected from this full definition of products, we cite the minimisation of products effects by unifying man at work (safety of person and goods), man as manager (quality, availability and reliability), as resident (safety in the vicinity of industrial sites) and as citizen (safeguarding environment).

Originality/value

Taking into account the triptych QSE at the product design stage. Our suggestion necessitates the implication of all the actors. Therefore, efforts must be concentrated on the dynamic and progressive integration of these actors. Our work is a source of information and knowledge. It is a source of information, as it allows to supply necessary data for better definition and conception of products. It is, in the same time, a source of knowledge in the sense where it presents specific methods (FMECA), that allow to put into existence the interest or rather the necessity of merger of the three concepts QSE.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show how the time frame for the execution of a construction project in Algeria is rarely respected because of organizational problems and uncertainties encountered while the execution is underway.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study on the construction of a metro station is used as a pilot project to show the effectiveness of replacing traditional construction processes by more innovative procedures. Concurrent engineering (CE) is applied to optimize the execution time of the underground structure. A numerical simulation is integrated into the construction process in order to update design parameters with real site conditions observed during the construction process.

Findings

The results show that the implementation of CE is efficient in reducing the completion time, with an 18 per cent reduction observed in this case study. A cost reduction of 20 per cent on the steel frame support and a total cost reduction of 3 per cent were obtained.

Research limitations/implications

The study demonstrates that the application of CE methods can be quite valuable in large, complex construction projects. Vulgarizing it as “the solution” to adjust time frame delay, control quality and cost, might be an issue for local construction enterprises in Algeria.

Originality/value

Using the concept of CE by overlapping different activities involved in a construction project and making use of simulation tools in the process at different stages of the execution have resulted in modifying the excavation method and hence reducing the completion times.

Abstract

This paper presents the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm in conjuction with the fuzzy logic method in order to achieve an optimized tuning of a proportional integral derivative controller (PID) in the DTC control loops of dual star induction motor (DSIM). The fuzzy controller is insensitive to parametric variations, however, with the PSO-based optimization approach we obtain a judicious choice of the gains to make the system more robust. According to Matlab simulation, the results demonstrate that the hybrid DTC of DSIM improves the speed loop response, ensures the system stability, reduces the steady state error and enhances the rising time. Moreover, with this controller, the disturbances do not affect the motor performances.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the Big Social Data (BSD) paradigm, which still lacks a clear and shared definition, and causes a lack of clarity and understanding about its beneficial opportunities for practitioners. In the knowledge management (KM) domain, a clear characterization of the BSD paradigm can lead to more effective and efficient KM strategies, processes and systems that leverage a huge amount of structured and unstructured data sources.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopts a systematic literature review (SLR) methodology based on a mixed analysis approach (unsupervised machine learning and human-based) applied to 199 research articles on BSD topics extracted from Scopus and Web of Science. In particular, machine learning processing has been implemented by using topic extraction and hierarchical clustering techniques.

Findings

The paper provides a threefold contribution: a conceptualization and a consensual definition of the BSD paradigm through the identification of four key conceptual pillars (i.e. sources, properties, technology and value exploitation); a characterization of the taxonomy of BSD data type that extends previous works on this topic; a research agenda for future research studies on BSD and its applications along with a KM perspective.

Research limitations/implications

The main limits of the research rely on the list of articles considered for the literature review that could be enlarged by considering further sources (in addition to Scopus and Web of Science) and/or further languages (in addition to English) and/or further years (the review considers papers published until 2018). Research implications concern the development of a research agenda organized along with five thematic issues, which can feed future research to deepen the paradigm of BSD and explore linkages with the KM field.

Practical implications

Practical implications concern the usage of the proposed definition of BSD to purposefully design applications and services based on BSD in knowledge-intensive domains to generate value for citizens, individuals, companies and territories.

Originality/value

The original contribution concerns the definition of the big data social paradigm built through an SLR the combines machine learning processing and human-based processing. Moreover, the research agenda deriving from the study contributes to investigate the BSD paradigm in the wider domain of KM.

Abstract

Purpose

The study explores frequency curves and natural frequencies as functions of crack length, crack angle, magnetic field strength and small size effects under the three boundary conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

This study investigates the nonlinear dynamics of a single-layered graphene nanoplate with an arbitrarily oriented crack under the influence of a magnetic field. The research focuses on three boundary conditions: simply supported, clamped and clamped-simply supported. The crack effect is modeled by incorporating membrane forces and additional flexural moments created by the crack into the equation of motion.

Findings

Results reveal that increasing the crack length, small size effects and magnetic field intensity reduces the flexural stiffness of the nanoplate, increases the compressive load and lowers its natural frequency. Additionally, excessive magnetic field intensity may lead to static buckling. The critical dimensionless magnetic fields are found to be 33.6, 95.1 and 72.3 for All edges of the nanoplate are simply supported (SSSS), fully clamped edges (CCCC) and two opposite edges are clamped and the other are simply supported (CSCS) nanoplates, respectively. Furthermore, for SSSS and CCCC boundary conditions, an increase in the crack angle results in a softening behavior of the hard spring. In contrast, the SCSC boundary condition exhibits the opposite behavior. These findings emphasize the importance of considering the effects of angled cracks and electromagnetic loads in the analysis and design of graphene-based nanostructures.

Originality/value

Novel equations are derived to account for the applied loads induced by the magnetic field. The nonlinear equation of motion is discretized using the Galerkin technique, and its analytical response is obtained via the multiple time-scales perturbation technique.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide suitable solutions to the management system of the municipal solid waste in an Algerian city.

Design/methodology/approach

The adopted approach focussed on the evaluation of different methods concerning the Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM), by analyzing methods of solid waste management hierarchy which constitutes appropriate tools in the MSWM.

Findings

One pillar of sustainable solid waste management is strategic planning, and links to guidance are provided. Another pillar is cost analysis of solid waste options, and links to useful analytical tools are also provided.

Research limitations/implications

This research has limitations that the paper plans to study in perspective: assessment of citizen perception of waste and its practical implications in the management of municipal solid waste as well as involvements of other agents or structures.

Practical implications

Results investigations conducted in this study allows to the municipality for solving city problems of MSW with priority to the environmental and public health protection.

Originality/value

The interest is carried, here, with the success of the different methods concerning the solid waste management hierarchy, which conditions mainly the success of the improvement of the waste management system.
