Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of back-EMF and current harmonics on position and speed estimation accuracy for single and dual three-phase (DTP) permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) with two fundamental-model-based sensorless control strategies which are widely utilized for AC machines, i.e. flux-linkage observer (FO) and simplified extended Kalman filter (EKF).

Design/methodology/approach

The effect of distorted back-EMF is studied for sensorless vector control of single three-phase PMSM. For the influence of current harmonics, unlike the existing literature where the current harmonics are deliberately injected, in this paper, sensorless switching-table-based direct torque control (ST-DTC) strategies for DTP-PMSM which inherently suffer from non-sinusoidal stator currents in addition to the distorted back-EMF, are investigated experimentally.

Findings

By employing the FO and simplified EKF-based sensorless vector control of single three-phase PMSM, it can be concluded that the rotor position estimation accuracy is less affected by the back-EMF harmonics when the simplified EKF method is utilized since it is less sensitive to such noises. When the influence of non-sinusoidal stator currents together with back-EMF harmonics is investigated for the conventional and modified ST-DTC of DTP-PMSM, it is indicated that the simplified EKF exhibits better position and speed estimation accuracy in both the conventional and modified ST-DTC strategies. In addition, its steady-state performance shows a slight superiority over that based on FO, in terms of flux and torque ripples, and THD of phase currents. For the dynamic performance, the estimated speed of simplified EKF shows less phase lag and fluctuations compared to that of FO.

Originality/value

This paper introduces the influence of back-EMF and current harmonics on sensorless control performance for single and DTP PMSMs. Detailed experimental results show that the simplified EKF exhibits better rotor position and speed estimation accuracy compared to that of FO due to its higher noise-rejection ability.

Abstract

Purpose

Sensorless online measurements, application of variable speed drives has been given a great attention, especially over the past few years. In most of the previous literates dealing with permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives, the combination of inter-sampled behavior with high gain design approach has not been discussed yet. This paper aims to discuss this feature in-depth.

Design/methodology/approach

The study contains a different approach for an observer running with surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous machine drives to implement sensorless control. Design of sampled data observer methodology for one kind of AC machine having non-linear model and backed by an elegant formal stability convergence analysis using the tools of Lyapunov stability techniques was highly recommended in scientific contributions, and it is yet needed to be solved.

Findings

In this study, a solution to observation problem is covered and developed by combining ideas from the high-gain design approach and inter-sample predictor based on stator voltage measurements. The output state currents are accessible only at the sampling instant to solve the problem of states observation at continuous-time mode. This allows to reducing the usage of online appliances, improving reliability of control design and saving costs.

Practical implications

The proposed observer is capable of guaranteeing an acceptable closed loop dynamic response over a wide range of operation region and industrial process for random initial conditions.

Originality/value

The output state predictor has been interred in constructing the innovation correct term to prove the robustness of the proposed observer against attenuated sampling interval. To validate the theoretical results introduced by the main fundamental theorem and prove the observer stability convergence, the proposed observer is demonstrated through a sample study application to variable speed permanent magnet synchronous machine drive.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a new method for selective harmonic elimination in a two-level three-phase inverter-fed direct torque controlled (DTC) permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive to suppress unwanted resonant frequencies.

Design/methodology/approach

The design methodology is based on random space vector pulse-width modulation (RSVPWM) of PMSM drives. MATLAB simulations support the validity of suggested structure.

Findings

The simulation results of the proposed algorithm exhibit the development of a proper gap at the selected frequency in the frequency spectra of the motor input currents and voltages as well as lowering the ripples in the PMSM electromagnetic torque, stator current and flux linkage responses in compared with traditional DTC.

Originality/value

The proposed algorithm is a revised form of the RSVPWM technique used in a closed-loop structure along with a sliding mode speed controller which is capable to deal with nonlinear motor loads in an online manner. This study can be beneficial for the designers of AC motor drive system who attempt to find a modulation method that can create a selective gap in the power spectrum density of the motor input voltages and currents, therefore, promote an acoustically pleasant drive or alleviate unwanted motor vibrations.
