Abstract

UK recruitment consultants Alfred Marks are setting up a nationwide chain of High Street Learning Centres with equipment and courseware supplied by ASI (UK) Ltd, one of the leading international multi‐media training companies. The first of these centres has been opened at their head office in London's Regent Street. The centres will incorporate the latest training technology in the form of Interactive Video Instruction (IVI). The training is intended to produce a new‐generation temporary workforce that will be more highly‐skilled and flexible than ever before. Comprehensive training in personal computing, behavioural skills and office practice will allow temporaries to play a more important role in the office environment, and could even offer a route into management.

Abstract

Further research on sexual harassment at work is necessary to persuade management to implement policies and grievance procedures covering this area in the workplace. Superior/subordinate harassment is the most serious problem for women in “feminine” occupations, the real problem being posed by middle‐class men with higher occupational status. Co‐worker harassment is more of a problem for middle‐class women in management and professions, these women being in direct competition with middle‐class men who cannot use occupational power over them. Harassment of women in factories (or other non‐traditional women's work) is a problem when women

Abstract

Considerable research has been conducted into the problem of sexual harassment in the workplace, although most of this research has been undertaken in the United States, particularly since the 1970's (Mackinnon, 1979; Rowe, 1981; Collins and Blodgeth, 1981). In 1974, for example, a group of women, almost equally black and white and with economic backgrounds ranging from very affluent to poor, discovered a common thread in their employment careers, which Farley (1980, p.1) summed up, saying:

Abstract

Just published by Longman Resources Unit, is aimed at organisations involved in solving the problems of youth unemployment, particularly in urban areas. The Youth Education Service team set out to investigate possibilities for self‐employment. It came up with a unique formula for starting up business ventures while at the same time satisfying local community needs. David Brockington, one of the YES sponsors, explains:

Abstract

HAVING outlined the scheme for monotyped catalogues, it only remains to consider it in its financial aspects. At Hampstead tenders were obtained for the same catalogue by monotype, linotype, and by ordinary setting up. It may be mentioned that the catalogue is of royal‐octavo size, in double columns, each being fifteen ems wide and fifty deep. Main entries are in bourgeois; subject‐headings are set (by hand) in clarendon, and the entries under such headings are put in brevier. Notes and contents were specified for either minion or nonpareil, and many lines break into part‐italics. The monotype machine provided all these founts except the two already mentioned—italic numerals and clarendon. We had to do without the former type, but the latter not being numerous are easily carried in as wanted from an ordinary case. Naturally, I cannot give the exact figures of the accepted tender, but it may be stated that in our particular case the cheapest quotation was for linotype work, although there was not much difference between that and monotyping; whilst for both these methods worked out at appreciably less than the quotations for ordinary hand‐work.

Abstract

The current debate on work‐sharing and shorter working hours is still largely conducted in terms of changes to men's working hours. ‘The old pattern of the 8‐hour day, 5‐day week, from 16–65 can no longer be taken for granted’, cry the pundits — but it has never been the norm for half the population. In Britain, France, the USA and Scandinavian countries women are now over 40 per cent of the labour force. Why, then, is so much time and energy spent researching and searching for ‘new patterns of work’ when a range of these already exist in women's working lives?

Abstract

THE GUARDIAN has taken us to task for an article in our July issue identifying various ploys in the legal art of tax avoidance (as opposed to illegal tax evasion). We were accused of encouraging “Vesteyism” although the Editor was really writing tongue‐in‐cheek about such gimmicks as acquiring Saville Row suits charged to the company and docked to the employee at loan value only.
