Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to dissect the diffusion of the number of organizations that implemented multiple management systems (MSs), considering the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards (quality, environment and safety) in the South European countries: Italy, Portugal and Spain. In addition, based on the data collected, forecasting models were developed to assess at which extent the multiple certifications are expected to occur in each studied country.
Design/methodology/approach
Data concerning the evolution of the amount of multiple MSs in Italy, Portugal and Spain were collected for the period between 1999 and 2015. The behavior of the evolution of the number of MSs over the years was studied adopting both the Gompertz and the Logistic models. The results obtained with these two models were compared and analyzed to provide a forecast for the next years.
Findings
The diffusion throughout the years of the number of MSs presents an S-shaped behavior. The evolution of the amount of MSs in countries with a lower saturation level are properly fitted by the Gompertz model whereas the Logistic model fits more accurately when considering countries with a larger saturation level.
Research limitations/implications
The data related to the early years are not available in some of the countries. To overcome this shortcoming missing data were extrapolated from the data set provided by the annual ISO survey. Additionally, the integration level attained by each company was not assessed and, on this regard and in the scope of this paper, an integrated management system is understood as implemented when organizations have multiple MSs implemented.
Practical implications
The results provide a cross-sectional portrayal of the diffusion of MSs certifications in the South European countries and enable a forecast for the trend in the next years.
Originality/value
This study aims for the first time, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, to analyze the diffusion of multiple MSs throughout the years.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of the level of integration of management systems (IMS) over product and process innovation capabilities (IC), by considering the role of open innovation (OI) activities as a moderating effect of those relationships.
Design/methodology/approach
A longitudinal empirical study was performed on an existing Spanish panel database that contains information related to innovation, where 9,765 companies were selected for the panel analysis. A logit approach with random effects was considered.
Findings
The level of IMS positively influences process and product IC. Moreover, external cooperation, and using it to a high extent not only positively moderates the effects of the level of IMS over process IC, but also of process over product IC, where it becomes indispensable for its effect to be positive. Finally, investing in external knowledge is a positive moderator of the effects of the level of IMS over both: process and product IC.
Originality/value
This is one of the first studies on empirically finding evidence of the impact of the level of IMS on process and product IC, and of the moderating effect of performing OI activities in order to achieve higher process and product IC through the IMS.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a step‐by‐step methodology for the design of parallel kinematic machines (PKMs), from the initial stages of the conceptual definition of a new machine to an optimum design fulfilling the complete set of design requirements.
Design/methodology/approach
The methodology includes consideration of the kinematic, static and dynamic features required for the manipulator, which must all be assessed in complete industrial design. It is applied to a 4‐degrees‐of‐freedom (DOF) Schönflies motion generator for pick & place operations by way of example.
Findings
The authors specify the key stages of a detailed design procedure for parallel manipulators.
Originality/value
There are many publications on the development of specific robots and parallel manipulators based on their particular characteristics. However, it is relatively rare to find a paper on the general procedure with a step‐by‐step methodology applicable to any parallel manipulator.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide a general approach to compute, determine, and characterize the connectivity of the end‐effector of a robotic manipulator of arbitrary architecture, in any of the postures that it can reach.
Design/methodology/approach
The types of motion of this link, i.e. translational, screw motions, combinations thereof, and self‐motions, are first defined and determined, simplifying the understanding of the instantaneous behaviour of the manipulator, aided by the definition of an alternative input basis.
Findings
The characterization provided by this paper simplifies the understanding of the instantaneous behaviour of the manipulator. The mobility of the end‐effector is completely characterized by the principal screws of its motion, which can be obtained from a generalized eigenproblem. In the process, alternative demonstrations of well‐known properties of the principal screws are provided.
Research limitations/implications
The approach presented is focused on the kinetostatic analysis of manipulators, and therefore, subjected to rigid body assumption.
Practical implications
This paper proposes effective approaches for engineering analysis of robotic manipulators.
Originality/value
This approach is based on a pure theoretical kinematic analysis that can characterize computationally the motion that the end‐effector of an industrial robot of general morphology (i.e. serial, parallel, hybrid manipulators, complex mechanisms, redundant or non‐redundantly actuated). Also, being implemented on a general‐purpose software for the kinematic analysis of mechanisms, it provides visual information of the motion capabilities of the manipulator, highly valuable on its design stages.

Abstract
Friction vibrations and noises which are common in brakes, have attracted a great deal of attention lately. This paper analyses low frequency vibrations in disc brakes excited at high car speed. This vibration, called judder, has a frequency in the range 10 to 300 Hz and usually comes in association with hum noises. The dynamic phenomenon shows two principal components, one normal and the other one tangential to the disc brake surface. It is explained how variations of friction coefficient, and thermoelastic instability caused by the tangential component, contribute to the appearance of judder. A numerical analysis in 3D using the finite element method has been implemented combining both tangential and normal components, and solving the thermoelastic process. Special attention is dedicated to the simulation of the thermoelastic process showing the correlation with experiments.

Abstract
Purpose
Significant interest in Integrated Management Systems (IMS), as a key area within ISO-related Management System Standards (MSS) literature, has been evident from both academia and industry over the past three decades. This study aims to map the evolution and current state of IMS research and propose possible directions for future studies.
Design/methodology/approach
A comprehensive content and bibliometric analysis of 846 documents from the Scopus database across the period 1995 to 2023 was conducted. This included performance analysis to track publication trends and identify key contributors, and content analysis to specify dominant research methodologies and the MSS most commonly integrated. Furthermore, science mapping techniques—such as co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrence analysis, and bibliographic coupling—were utilized to outline the collaborative networks and the conceptual and intellectual structure of the field.
Findings
The study identifies three principal IMS research themes: the practical implementation of IMS, their role in promoting sustainability and social responsibility, and their impact on continuous performance improvement. It also highlights the field’s evolution and key research constituents—including influential works, prolific authors, leading academic institutions and countries, and top publishing journals. It further reveals that IMS research exhibits strong collaboration across authors and countries, and a rich methodological plurality, notably with a marked increase in empirical surveys in recent years. Additionally, it identifies the most frequently referenced MSS for integration, prominently featuring ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001/OHSAS 18001.
Originality/value
This study is original in its application of a dual analytical approach—bibliometric and content analysis—to provide a holistic overview of IMS research. It offers new insights into the integration of diverse MSS and proposes several promising paths for future research. Among the most prominent are standardizing IMS fundamental specifications, conducting more empirical research with advanced methods to evaluate the effects of MSS integration, providing practical support for organizations in IMS implementation through tailored methodologies and tools, and exploring the potential of Industry 4.0 and 5.0 technologies to advance IMS practices.

Abstract
Purpose
Adoption and implementation of sustainable strategies (SS) in firms have been widely studied; however, there is scarce evidence of factors that affect the overall firm performance (FP). Therefore, in this research the variables knowledge management (KM) and professionalization (PR) toward the adoption of SS and their impact on FP are promoted.
Design/methodology/approach
Data from 120 firms in manufacturing industry in Coahuila, Mexico, were collected, and the study is based on the PLS-SEM technique.
Findings
The results revealed that (1) KM and PR present a positive impact on SS and (2) SS are positively related to FP.
Practical implications
For manufacturing managers, it is necessary to implement SS that meet the expectations of stakeholders, in addition to training human resources with the ability to achieve the aims of the firm and at the same time take care of the environment. As for corporate policymakers, it is essential that they promote global environmental care strategies based on collaborative business.
Originality/value
This research contributes to literature on business management, mainly to the incorporation of SS that allow boosting the economic aspect, but without neglecting social and environmental part.

Las investigaciones acerca de la adopción e implementación de estrategias sostenibles (ES) en las organizaciones han sido muy estudiadas, sin embargo, hay poca evidencia de los factores que inciden en el rendimiento empresarial (RE). Por consiguiente, en esta investigación promueve la gestión del conocimiento (GC) y profesionalización (PR) hacia la adopción de ES y su impacto en el RE.
Diseño/metodología/enfoque
Se incluyen datos de 120 empresas manufactureras de Coahuila, México y la investigación está basada en la técnica PLS-SEM.
Hallazgos
En concreto, los resultados revelaron que: (1) la gestión del conocimiento y la profesionalización presentan un impacto positivo en las estrategias sostenibles y (2) las estrategias sostenibles se relacionan positivamente con el rendimiento empresarial.
Implicaciones prácticas:
Para los directivos de la industria manufacturera, es necesario implementar estrategias sostenibles que cumplan con las expectativas de los grupos de interés, además de formar recursos humanos con la capacidad de alcanzar los objetivos organizacionales y al mismo tiempo lograr un cuidado del medio ambiente. En cuanto a los responsables políticos, es esencial que promuevan estrategias globales de cuidado del medio ambiente basadas en la colaboración empresarial.
Originalidad/valor:
La investigación contribuye a la literatura de la gestión empresarial, en la incorporación de estrategias sostenibles que impulsen el aspecto económico, pero sin descuidar la parte social y ambiental.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the antifriction, antiwear and tribolayer formation properties of the trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinate ionic liquid (IL) as additive at 1 wt.% in two base oils and their mixtures, comparing the results with those of a commercial oil.
Design/methodology/approach
The mixture of the base oils used in the formulation of the commercial oil SAE 0W20 plus the IL was tested under rolling/sliding and reciprocating conditions to determine the so-called Stribeck curve, the tribolayer formation and the antifriction and antiwear behaviors.
Findings
The use of this IL as additive in these oils does not change their viscosity; improves the antifriction and antiwear properties of the base oils, making equal or outperforming these properties of the SAE 0W20; and the thickness and formation rate of the tribolayer resulting from the IL-surface interaction is highly dependent on the type of base oil and influence on the friction and wear results.
Originality/value
The use of this IL allows to replace partial or totally commercial antifriction and antiwear additives.

Purpose
The Cuban population is going through a process of demographic change and accelerated aging, which, together with a difficult economic situation, places the older adults in a complex economic reality, especially in the most vulnerable communities. This paper aims to analyze the housing situation of the older adults in a vulnerable community in Santiago de Cuba during a period of particular economic difficulty.
Design/methodology/approach
The study analyzes the housing situation of a sample of people over 60 years of age (n = 325) in a vulnerable community in the city of Santiago de Cuba. A structured interview was used for data collection.
Findings
The results show that most of the people over 60 years of age interviewed considered their homes to be in a poor state of repair. A significant part of the homes were built with precarious materials and had cracked walls, leaks, problems with the functioning of the toilet, broken pipes, etc. In addition, most of the houses were poorly equipped, with a large number of them lacking refrigerators, cell phones or computers or other electrical appliances (heater, shower, stove, etc.). Women, people with black skin and people over 75 years of age were in a particularly precarious housing situation.
Social implications
Demographic changes and the expected aging of the population in Cuba mean that meeting the needs of the older adults is expected to become increasingly complex. The design of public policies and administrative management should take into consideration the housing needs of people over 60 years of age in vulnerable communities, with special attention to women, racialized people and older adults.
Originality/value
The research was conducted based on the information provided by a particularly vulnerable group in Cuba (older adults), about which there is limited information available, and the data were collected during a particularly challenging time for the Cuban economy: the post-COVID-19 pandemic period. The challenges of conducting research of this nature in Cuba and the period during which data collection took place form the basis of the originality of this manuscript.

Abstract
This chapter deals with the development of banking in the Crown of Aragon from the end of the thirteenth century through the establishment of money changers, which followed similar patterns as in other Western European territories. It starts with a review of existing literature and follows with an explanation on the different banking services provided by money changers and the specific legal framework that supported such activities. It then examines the geographical distribution of private banks in cities and towns within the domains of the kings of Aragon, as well as their evolution throughout the fourteenth century. After that, it offers an analysis of the most common professional profiles among these bankers and financers. Finally, drawing on a heterogeneous pool of unpublished data, it seeks to shed light on the diversity of investors and clients of these establishments, a crucial proof of their role in integrated financial markets.
