About 20 years ago the imminent death of the three roll mill was being forecast by many authorities. Their arguments were good. For the previous 50 years the technology of the three roll mill was virtually unchanged and the new sand mills, high speed dissolvers etc, were opening a new dimension to pigment dispersion. It was this that caused roll mill manufacturers, who, up until that time had concentrated on bettering the engineering aspects of their mills to consider how they could improve their customers' products in the various fields of paint, ink, soap, cosmetic and chocolate dispersing. A new era dawned for three roll mills, instead of simply improving their old mills the manufacturers hired dispersion experts. Chemists and technicians from the ink, chocolate and other industries joined the mill manufacturers and it very soon became apparent that many improvements could be made, so much so that leading mill manufacturers set up complete research laboratories separated into the various industries involved. Improvements rapidly followed. One of the first was static hydraulic pressure in place of the mechanical screw system. This soon gave way, on the more expensive mills, to dynamic hydraulic pressure. The difference being that in the latter system a pump is continually operating to maintain a constant pressure on the hydraulic oil and thereby on the rolls. And so was born a three roll mill which for the first time did not need constant re‐adjustment to maintain steady pressure regardless of the temperature when working.

In this volume, we ask what happens when the researcher in forms of intimate scholarship is decentered – no longer the focus, but merely one part of an entangled material-discursive formation collectively producing the “results” of the inquiry. In the midst of the current ontological turn in qualitative research, we argue that this form of scholarship offers the opportunity to address directly the question of the post-human subject and generate thinking for the field of qualitative research more broadly. In particular, chapters in this volume highlight ways that researchers of teaching and teacher education practices can advance conversations and knowledge in education while exploring theories with an ontological view of the world as fundamentally multiple, dynamic, fluid, and co-constituted by entangled material and discursive forces. Authors “put to work” post-human, nonlinear, and multiplistic theories and concepts to disrupt and decenter the “I” or researcher-subject in self-focused methodologies, and/or to analyze knowledge and practice as co-produced by multiplicities of human/material and incorporeal elements in which the self is but one temporally “individuated” or “subjectivized” component. In the introduction, we provide brief discussions of intimate scholarship and post-human perspectives, followed by an orientation to the content of the this book.

Reviews the findings of the Audit Commission′s fifth triennial report on computer fraud and abuse, published in October 1994. This shows that, while computer fraud and abuse is a growth industry, many organizations do not seem to take computer security seriously. Also considers a survey conducted by an undergraduate of Leeds Metropolitan University. This reached broadly similar conclusions. Many organizations do not have basic computer security procedures in place. Simple matters such as proper management of passwords and virus checking are often neglected. Management should ensure basic procedures are in place. These low‐cost procedures can do much to reduce the incidence of computer fraud and thereby avoid the associated cost and inconvenience.

While the steep increases in rates of incarceration seen in the United States in the late twentieth century have begun to level out, one form of incarceration has seen more drastic reductions in rates of use in the 2010s: long-term solitary confinement. Across the United States, prisons that once isolated prisoners for decades at a time stand hauntingly empty. The solitary confinement reform movement provides an important lens for examining what happens when an entrenched punitive practice faces widespread and sustained criticism and reveals the multiple paradigms through which reform operates – through politics, litigation, or charismatic leadership.

A crisis looms, problem rolls in on top of problem, “if I do this then this, then that, then … but what if?”. At this point we often cast around for outside help, if only there was someone to “bounce ideas off” and talk through the problem. There seems to be too much to think of, all at the same time. Yet in reaching for the phone to call a friend, advisor, operational researcher, systems analyst or whoever, have we overlooked someone?

SO Sir Monty Finniston has got his way. Well almost. A draft of a Royal Charter to establish an Engineering Council has been laid before Parliament. We just hope that it will not create still further dissension among those who rightly can currently call themselves Engineers.

NO document issued by the National Board for Prices and Incomes is of more importance to people engaged in work study than Report 83 on Job Evaluation. It lists nine definitions by various authorities but contents itself with a fairly simple one; the comparison of jobs by the use of formal and systematic procedures, set down on paper and adhered to as distinct from rule of thumb methods, with subsequent analysis determining the relative positions of jobs in a wage structure.

This article describes the aims and background of the RIDDLE project, which was funded by the Libraries Programme of the Commission of the European Communities' (CEC's) Telematics Research and Technological Development Programme. RIDDLE (Rapid Information Display and Dissemination in a Library Environment) started in February 1993 and ended in December 1994.
