Abstract

Purpose

The hotel customers are conscious of the deteriorating environmental conditions and demand for online immersions. Hotels lack an exciting shift in customer behavior for augmented customer re-patronage intention (CRPI) especially in developing countries. This study aims to apply customer-dominant service logic (CDSL) to comprehend customers’ life-sphere contributing to some of the vital United Nations sustainable development goals (UN SDGs). In this essence, CDSL grasps the impact of customer empowerment (CE) and environmental corporate social responsibility (Env CSR) on customer re-patronage intention (C-RPI) with the mediating and moderating effects in Pakistan’s four- and five-star hotels.

Design/methodology/approach

A deductive approach is followed in which an online survey of 400 hotel customers was conducted using purposive and snowball sampling techniques to understand the practice of C-RPI and UN SDGs.

Findings

This study reveals that executing the UN SDGs in the hotel industry eventually boosts CE and Env CSR, further enhancing online customer value cocreation (O-CVCC) resulting in C-RPI. Both CE and Env CSR gain a complimentary/partial mediation by O-CVCC on C-RPI is also reported. Moreover, sensation seeking moderates the relationship between CE and O-CVCC. Yet, customer commitment does not moderate the relationship between O-CVCC and C-RPI.

Originality/value

This study highlights that C-RPI (i.e. SDG 11) enhances when Env CSR is taken care of (i.e. SDG 13), customers are empowered (i.e. SDG 5 and SDG 17) and cocreated online (i.e. SDG 9). To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first studies to empirically test the approaches in the hotel industry contributing to SDG 5, 9, 11, 13 and 17.

Objetivo

Los clientes de hoteles son conscientes de las condiciones ambientales deteriorantes y demandan inmersión en línea. Los hoteles carecen de un cambio emocionante en el comportamiento del cliente para la intención de repatronaje aumentada (CRPI) especialmente en países en desarrollo. Este estudio aplica la lógica de servicio dominante del cliente (CDSL) para comprender la esfera de vida de los clientes que contribuyen a algunos de los vitales Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) de las Naciones Unidas (ODS de la ONU). En esencia, CDSL comprende el impacto del empoderamiento del cliente (CE) y la RSE ambiental (Env CSR) en C-RPI con efectos de mediación y moderación en hoteles de cuatro y cinco estrellas de Pakistán.

Metodología

Se utilizó un enfoque deductivo en el que se llevó a cabo una encuesta en línea a 400 clientes de hoteles utilizando técnicas de muestreo intencional y de bola de nieve para comprender la práctica de RPI y los ODS de la ONU.

Resultados

Este estudio revela que la ejecución de los ODS de la ONU en la industria hotelera finalmente impulsa CE y Env CSR, y mejora aún más O-CVCC resultando en C-RPI. También se informa que tanto CE como Env CSR obtienen una mediación complementaria/parcial por la co-creación de valor del cliente en línea (O-CVCC) en C-RPI. Además, la búsqueda de sensaciones (SS) modera entre CE y O-CVCC. Sin embargo, el compromiso del cliente (CC) no modera entre O-CVCC y C-RPI.

Originalidad

Este estudio destaca que C-RPI (es decir, ODS 11) mejora cuando se cuida Env CSR (es decir, ODS 13), los clientes están empoderados (es decir, ODS 5 y ODS 17) y co-creados en línea (es decir, ODS 9). Este estudio es uno de los primeros estudios en probar empíricamente los enfoques en la industria hotelera que contribuyen a los ODS 5, 9, 11, 13 y 17.

方法

Abstract

Purpose

The rapid shift in the emerging pedagogies of customer behavior has changed the business preferences in the hotel sector. This study prioritizes the hotel's main task to develop customer re-patronage intention. Keeping in line with these factors, this study investigates the impact of customer empowerment on re-patronage intentions through customer value co-creation in the hotel sector of Pakistan. Furthermore, the study examines the moderating impact of sensation-seeking on customers.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 350 potential customers participated in the online survey using purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Partial least square structural equation modeling was employed using Smart PLS-3 to test the projected hypotheses.

Findings

This study reveals that empowered customers improve their behavior and involvement in value co-creation, which, in turn, increases the prospects of re-patronage intention. Moreover, sensation-seeking moderates between consumer empowerment and customer value co-creation.

Research limitations/implications

Customer-dominant logic and sense-making theory present interesting insights where customer empowerment and value co-creation have a positively significant impact on customer re-patronage intention. Findings also elaborate on a significant mediating role of customer value co-creation activities, which is an interesting call for hotel managers to add thought-sharing ecosystems. The suggested factors add long-lasting results in terms of revenues, performance and global GDP.

Practical implications

It provides guidance for the hotel managers through novel factors that activate the customer to augment an intention to re-patron. Moreover, it provides a direction to add sensation-seeking strategies that strengthen the effects on customer empowerment and value co-creation.

Originality/value

This study has its uniqueness in introducing an environment in hotels where customers are empowered to further actively participate in value co-creation initiatives, along with sensation-seeking acting as a stimulus among them. These factors have greatly impacted the hotel's objectives (i.e. re-patronage intention).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to highlight key issues pertaining to making use of Islamic equity indices and proposing possible solutions to address the problems faced in advancement of the concept of Shariah investing (SI) with the aim to advance the discourse on the subject.

Design/methodology/approach

Online focus group discussion (FGD) was carried out in which ten Islamic finance researchers and analysts belonging to institutions considered as authority on the subject matter participated to share their viewpoints on Islamic equity indices. Content analysis on the collected data of FGD was carried out which has revealed six key themes.

Findings

Six broader themes were identified based on the analysis of FGD, which includes criteria for constructing Islamic equity indices, utilization of Islamic equity indices for comparison with conventional stock indices, stock market efficiency perspectives, reason for integration of different equity markets, investors’ awareness of SI and future directions of Islamic equity indices. Results of the study indicate that Islamic finance researchers and analysts opined that there is a need for revising the criteria for construction of Islamic equity indices. There are conflicting viewpoints regarding performance and efficiency of Islamic indices in comparison with conventional indices and main reasons for stock market integration are trade liberalization, globalization and other factors. Moreover, there is a need for making investors and other market players aware about the attractiveness of Islamic indices from investing point of view.

Originality/value

Based on this extensive literature review and as highlighted by Masih et al. (2018) in their recap of literature on Islamic equity indices indicating that there are bulk of empirical studies carried in the past in the domain, however, there is a dearth of theoretical and qualitative studies. Hence, this preliminary qualitative study not only makes theoretical contribution but also deploys FGD, which is rarely used in the similar context, and offers candid views of the participants on key issues pertaining to Islamic equity indices. This lends novelty to this study.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand interest-free microfinance practices in India, identify issues and recommend possible solutions.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the proposed objectives, Bait-un-Nasr (BuN) Urban Cooperative Credit Society, located in Mumbai, India, is considered for the case study. The study is based on both primary and secondary data. The primary data are collected through questionnaires and secondary data from various sources. Performance of the institution is assessed in terms of growth and sustainability indicators.

Findings

It is found that BuN has been successful in providing interest-free microfinance services in India. A few operational issues have been highlighted and possible solutions are recommended. Moreover, it is found that in comparison to the microfinance industry standards, the performance of BuN has been lower.

Research limitations/implications

BuN is evaluated from only growth and sustainability aspects and not from the aspect of the socio-economic impacts of its services on the lives of customers.

Practical implications

This study would become a documented source of interest-free microfinance practices in India. Moreover, the recommendations provided, if implemented, would help BuN in further growth and development.

Social implications

This study would help create awareness in the society about the practices of interest-free microfinance.

Originality/value

This paper highlights the interest-free microfinance practices in India that have not received the needed attention. The paper also attempts to identify key issues pertaining to interest-free microfinance with possible solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to understand the operations of interest-free microfinance institutions, find the issues and recommend possible solutions in the Indian context.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is based on the case study of Sanghamam Multistate Cooperative Credit Society. This research uses both primary and secondary data. The institution is assessed in terms of two major performance aspects, namely, outreach indicators and financial performance indicators. A brief comparative study of Sanghamam with the aggregate performance of the Indian microfinance industry has also been included.

Findings

It is found that Sanghamam has been successfully providing interest-free microfinance services in India. The performance of Sanghamam on selected industry benchmarks is in line with the performance of the Indian microfinance industry. However, a few issues such as potential liquidity risk, lower penetration in the poorer sections of the population, Shariah issues in the method of determination of service charges on demand loans and in the structure of group deposit scheme and profit-sharing business loans have been highlighted.

Research limitations/implications

Sanghamam is evaluated from only outreach and financial performance aspects and not from the aspect of the impacts of its services.

Practical implications

This study would help in documenting the operations of Sanghamam. Moreover, the recommendations provided, if implemented, would help Sanghamam in further growth.

Social implications

This study would help create awareness in the society about the practices of interest-free microfinance.

Originality/value

This paper highlights the interest-free microfinance practices in India that have not received the needed attention. The authors have discussed the key issues related to the interest free microfinance and recommended the possible solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mediating roles of knowledge sharing behaviors (knowledge collecting and donating) in linking the relationship between high-commitment human resource management (HRM)practices and specific aspects of innovation capability, namely, exploitative and exploratory innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on quantitative approach and structural equation modeling to examine the correlation among the latent constructs based on the survey data collected from 281 participants in 95 Chinese firms.

Findings

The findings of this study support the mediating role of knowledge sharing (KS) behaviors in the relationship between HRM practices and aspects of innovation capability. It highlights the important role of knowledge donating and indicates that the effect of knowledge donating is more significant than that of knowledge collecting on exploitative and exploratory innovation.

Research limitations/implications

Future research should investigate the impact of high-commitment HRM practices on innovation capability under the moderating effects of organizational variables to bring better understanding on the relationship among them.

Originality/value

The paper significantly contributes to increasing knowledge and insights on the correlation between high-commitment HRM practices and specific forms of innovation. The understanding on mediating role of KS contribute to advancing the body of knowledge of HRM and innovation theory.

Abstract

Purpose

Considering the transition of communicational channels from physical to digital spaces, this study aims to provide a theoretical foundation for understanding engagement in electronic word of mouth (eWoM) among managers and customers in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses the four aggregate dimensions, namely, performance expectancy, efforts expectancy, social influence and facilitations condition. Further, this paper uses the 14 second-order themes of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology with a data set that represents elements that can trigger eWoM, both from managers’ and customers’ perspectives. The process of data structuration follows thematic analysis and axial coding techniques.

Findings

The results of this study show that performance expectancy, facilitation conditions, social influence and effort expectancy all trigger positive eWoM generation in the hospitality and tourism industry indicating customers’ and managers’ perspectives.

Originality/value

This novel study provides a theoretical foundation and novel propositions for future research work on the role of novel antecedents that can trigger eWoM in the hospitality and tourism industry. This paper also provides a benchmark for practitioners and policymakers in their strategic decisions-making towards improving business performance through positive eWoM.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the importance of investigating the impact of cloud computing on the e-learning process, the relationship development between the two is not examined well. Thus, the main goal of this research is to assess how to improve the e-learning process by using cloud services. This paper aims to attempt to investigate the impact of cloud computing on e-learning development.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. For review-related work and statistical analysis of questionnaires, the SPSS 22 and SMART-PLS 3.2 software package are used.

Findings

The results from the study show that e-learning development is significantly influenced by the quality of services, cloud features, university readiness and users’ readiness.

Originality/value

The adoption of cloud technology within an instructional environment has the capacity of offering new opportunities for improvement and innovation for gaining knowledge of the process.

Abstract

Purpose

Government agencies are trying to develop strategies to improve their innovative activities. However, due to many challenges and obstacles, employees are reluctant to perform innovatively in such agencies. Human resource management (HRM) practises and an appropriate culture can help to improve service innovation. However, empirical evidence to prove this relationship is insufficient particularly in the government sector. Thus, this study aims to empirically analyses the effect of HRM practises and innovation culture on service innovation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s Government agencies.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected from government entities in the UAE. Structural equation modelling through partial least squares modelling was used to test the proposed hypotheses. SPSS was also used to conduct preliminary analysis.

Findings

Statistical results provide strong evidence that HRM practises and innovation culture positively affected service innovation of UAE’s Government agencies.

Research limitations/implications

Further details and valuable implications are discussed throughout the study. Results have many practical and theoretical implications. Results can help government agencies develop their services innovation by tailoring HRM practises and establishing proper innovation culture in their agencies.

Originality/value

Although several contributions indicated that culture is a key determinant of innovation and a mediator in the link between HRM practises and service innovation, the literature lacks empirical studies investigating this link. Accordingly, this study seeks to bridge this gap and delivers evidence supporting them. In addition, this study is one of the unique studies that use these variables in government agencies in the UAE.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of high-involvement human resource management (HRM) practices on innovation capabilities via the mediating role of knowledge sharing (KS) behaviors. This paper also investigates the potential moderating role of market turbulence in fostering the influence of KS behaviors on two forms of innovation capability, namely exploitative and exploratory innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

Analysis of moment structures and structural equation modeling are applied to examine the correlation among the latent constructs based on the survey data collected from 125 manufacturing and service firms.

Findings

The findings of this study support the mediating role of KS behaviors in the relationship between high-involvement HRM practices and aspects of innovation capability. It highlights the important role of market turbulence in strengthening the influence of KS on exploitative and exploratory innovation.

Research limitations/implications

Future research should investigate the impact of high-involvement HRM practices on innovation capability under the moderating effects of organizational variables, such as perceived organizational support, to bring better understanding on a new mechanism to pursuit innovation.

Originality/value

The paper significantly contributes to increasing knowledge and insights into the correlation between high-involvement HRM practices and specific forms of innovation. The understanding on the mediating role of KS behaviors and the moderating role of market turbulence contribute to advancing the body of knowledge of HRM and innovation theory.
