Abstract

Turkish police organizational structures have changed dramatically since their inception and it is likely that further organizational changes and restructuring in police services will take place in the near future. Currently there is a trend slowly towards decentralization from the existing highly centralized system, and there are some proposals for future changes. This paper first of all explores different forms of police organizations responsible for public policing, then it considers the current slow trend towards decentralization and proposals for future changes in central and provincial police units. The paper argues that although there is evidence of decentralization, it is likely to take long time realize a decentralized policing system in Turkey.

Abstract

Purpose

The study uses VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR)-structural equation modeling (SEM) to construct benchmarks for service providers and evaluate a multimethodology practice in the Internet industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected using a survey based on an email/interview with 444 Internet users participating. SEM obtained coefficient values by way of customer expectations for Internet service providers. The authors normalized coefficients and integrated them into the VIKOR method for ranking competitors in the Internet industry.

Findings

VIKOR-SEM revealed that network and information quality and security/privacy significantly positively impact customer trust while network and information quality and customer trust significantly positively affect Internet users' value perceptions. Customer services do not affect customer trust, while security/privacy and customer services have no significant influence on customer value perceptions. Though customer services and Internet users' trust and value perceptions directly, significantly and positively affect their commitments, the quality of network and information and security/privacy indirectly, significantly and positively influence customer commitments.

Research limitations/implications

The study was in the Internet industry of Iraq. The results cannot be accurate for the other countries and the service sectors. The researchers/managers can adopt the model in other service sectors to test the multimethodology.

Originality/value

VIKOR-SEM evaluated the changes in customer expectations and service providers in the Internet industry.

Abstract

Purpose

To conduct a numerical study on two‐dimensional, transient, buoyant flow inside an air‐filled 45°‐inclined enclosure, heated and cooled on adjacent walls.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing equations obtained through the stream function‐vorticity formulation are solved using finite differences. Flow characteristics have been investigated for an aspect ratio of 1. Calculations are carried out for the Rayleigh numbers in the range of 103Ra≤5×107.

Findings

With the increasing Rayleigh number, four distinct flow regimes were identified based on the time variations of the mid‐point stream function and the mean Nusselt number at the heated wall as well as those of flow and temperature fields: steady flow with symmetric two cells at low Ra; steady flow with asymmetric two cells at lower moderate Ra; oscillatory flow with the periodic nature at upper moderate Ra; and oscillatory flow in chaotic nature at higher Ra range.

Originality/value

The distinct flow regimes are observed only at ϕ=45°; a small deviation of the tilting angle from ϕ=45° results in the disappearance of the distinction.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop a review rating prediction method based on a supervised text mining approach for unrated customer reviews.

Design/methodology/approach

Using 2,851 hotel comment card (HCC) reviews, this paper manually labeled positive and negative comments with seven aspects (dining, cleanliness, service, entertainment, price, public, room) that emerged from the content of said reviews. After text preprocessing (tokenization, eliminating punctuation, stemming, etc.), two classifier models were created for predicting the reviews’ sentiments and aspects. Thus, an aggregate rating scale was generated using these two classifier models to determine overall rating values.

Findings

A new algorithm, Comment Rate (CRate), based on supervised learning, is proposed. The results are compared with another review-rating algorithm called location based social matrix factorization (LBSMF) to check the consistency of the proposed algorithm. It is seen that the proposed algorithm can predict the sentiments better than LBSMF. The performance evaluation is performed on a real data set, and the results indicate that the CRate algorithm truly predicts the overall rating with ratio 80.27%. In addition, the CRate algorithm can generate an overall rating prediction scale for hotel management to automatically analyze customer reviews and understand the sentiment thereof.

Research limitations/implications

The review data were only collected from a resort hotel during a limited period. Therefore, this paper cannot explore the effect of independent variables on the dependent variable in context of larger period.

Practical implications

This paper provides a novel overall rating prediction technique allowing hotel management to improve their operations. With this feature, hotel management can evaluate guest feedback through HCCs more effectively and quickly. In this way, the hotel management will be able to identify those service areas that need to be developed faster and more effectively. In addition, this review rating prediction approach can be applied to customer reviews posted via online platforms for detecting review and rating reliability.

Originality/value

Manually analyzing textual information is time-consuming and can lead to measurement errors. Therefore, the primary contribution of this study is that although comment cards do not have rating values, the proposed CRate algorithm can predict the overall rating and understand the sentiment of the reviews in question.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to perform an exergy analysis of a turbojet engine combustor at different cycle parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

Base cycle parameters have been defined for the engine, and then differentiation of the combustor exergy efficiencies and destruction rates have been evaluated by changing overall pressure ratio, combustor exit temperature and combustor pressure ratio.

Findings

For the basic engine cycle, combustor unit is found to have lowest exergy efficiency as 62.3 for the sea level static condition. Compressor turbine exhaust and whole engine exergy efficiencies have been calculated as 88.7, 96.5, 68.2 and 69.4, respectively.

Practical implications

Because of the biggest exergy, destruction is seen mainly in combustion system; effect of the combustor inlet pressure (related to the compressor design technology), pressure drop and exit temperature on the exergy efficiencies have been analyzed and combustor second law efficiency have been evaluated.

Social implications

The investigation’s purposes are highly connected with social wellness and targeted at sustainable development of the society. Practical implementation of the obtained scientific results is directed on the improving of combustor for a turbojet engines and decreasing negative influence on the environment.

Originality/value

As a result of this paper, the following are the contribution of this paper in the field of gas turbine exergy subjects: Combustor has been found as the most critical component in respect of the exergy efficiency. Therefore, the effect of the combustor main cycle parameters such as inlet pressure, combustor pressure ratio and exit temperature have been analyzed.

Abstract

The importance and value of the leisure phenomenon are becoming more prominent daily as it becomes a determining indicator of both qualities of life and social welfare. The COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused severe disruptions in the lifestyles of individuals, has also made it inevitable to face the emergence of sociocultural conditions in which traditional daily life routines have disappeared and the reorganisation of the leisure space. In line with the conditions mentioned earlier, the characteristics of the ‘new’ and the ‘old’ have started to come together in the daily lives and leisure spaces of individuals in constant conflict. Under these conditions, individuals who spent their leisure time travelling from one place to another before the pandemic had to choose different leisure options. Therefore, the leisure space, which is an integral part of the social life of today's individual, has evolved into an unthinkable position independently of the COVID-19 pandemic effects. From this point of view, this study aims to examine the transformation of the leisure space due to the COVID-19 pandemic within the framework of previous studies on this subject and to discuss it in the context of sustainability. For this purpose, firstly, a general framework is drawn on the historical development of the leisure concept, and then its relationship with the COVID-19 pandemic is evaluated. In the last part of the study, the new forms of leisure that have emerged due to the process, as mentioned earlier, are discussed over the critical issues in ensuring the sustainability of leisure practices.

Abstract

Purpose

Treatment of intersectionality in empirical studies has predominantly engaged with individual categories of difference. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that there is utility in exploring intersectionality at the intersection of individual and institutional levels. As such the authors move beyond the polarised take on intersections as either individual or institutional phenomenon and tackle intersectionality as a relational phenomenon that gains meaning at the encounter of individuals and institutions in context. Therefore, the authors explicate how intersectionality features as forms of solidarity and hostility in work environments. As such the authors posit that not only individuals but also the institutions should change if inclusion is aimed at societal and organisational levels.

Design/methodology/approach

A thematic analysis on qualitative interview data of a purposive- and snowball-selected sample of 11 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer working adults in Turkey was used.

Findings

This paper finds evidence to support the existence of a multidimensional model of intersectionality, where conflicting and complementary individual and institutional intersections create four intersectional typologies in the form of intersectional hostility, intersectional struggle, intersectional adjustment and intersectional solidarity.

Originality/value

The extant literature offers rich insights into individual intersectionality but sheds very little light on institutional intersectionality and its interaction with individual intersectionality. This paper attempts to fill in this gap by investigating intersectional encounters as interactions between the individual and institutional intersections.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of complementary and alternative medical applications (CAM) and non-drug treatments of women during their pregnancies, postpartum periods and the changes between these periods. The Screening Form for Non-pharmacologic Methods Used during Pregnancy and Postpartum period was administered to the participants. Passiflora (Incarnata), Hypericum perforatum (St. John's Wort), omega 3 supplements, bright light treatment, transmagnetic stimulation, S-adenosyl-methionine, herbal teas, biofeedback/neurofeedback, amulets, exercise, acupuncture and psychotherapy were investigated. The ratio of the use of one of the CAM methods for psychiatric complaints during people's lifetime was found to be 33.3% (n=162). Herbal teas were the main practice used during pregnancy (58.8%) and the postpartum. The use of CAM according to the utilization periods of the participants statistically significantly decreased in those who were currently pregnant (Cochran's Q=298.007; P<0.05). The use of participants' non-drug treatments in the periodical follow-up decreased in those who are currently pregnant and increased during the postpartum period.

Abstract

Along with accounting scandals in the past, academics, researchers, and legislators have focused on fraud. The purpose of this study is to examine postgraduate and doctoral studies, articles, and books about forensic accounting and fraud audit published between the years 2008 and 2018 in Turkey. For this purpose, a total of 96 studies have been examined and 35 of these are master’s theses, 10 of them are PhD theses, 45 of them are articles, and six of them are books. These studies were presented in tables as classified. The studies examined in our research are summarized as year they were published, the author, and the scope of the topic and in terms of results. The conclusions of this study can be summarized as follows: (a) the majority of thesis published about forensic accounting and fraud audit are in 2011 and following years. In addition, most of the theses are focused on forensic accounting review rather than fraud audit. (b) Results in the articles reviewed are in the same direction with theses. (c) There are very few books about fraud audit and forensic accounting. One of them is related to fraud audit, while the rest of them are related to forensic accounting and forensic accounting profession. We suggest extending the scope of the study and making to other countries.

Abstract

By drawing on 18-month ethnographic fieldwork conducted among people who participate in state-regulated games of chance in Istanbul, during the recent Turkish economic crisis in 2021–2022, and engaging with scholarly work on the anthropology of Turkey, economic anthropology and local media and grey resources, this article illustrates the rise of cryptocurrency trading in Turkey. This article shows how my participants situated the cryptocurrency trading within their own techniques to ameliorate financial volatility and to compensate their mistrust in governmental financial institutions during times of economic turbulence. Cryptocurrency trading was viewed as an investment technique that assists in accumulating savings for ensuring the future amid fluctuating national currency and polarized political realities. Meanwhile, cryptocurrency trading was also identified as a game of chance that swings between hinging on luck or skill, and the research participants debated if cryptocurrency trading is permissible in Islam (Halal) or forbidden. Therefore, this article suggests that cryptocurrency trading, although on the rise, is still a contested topic in which the boundaries between perceptions and practices of investing and gambling are blurred within the Turkish context. The controversy of the cryptocurrency trading emerges from the polarized public attitudes and the dissonance between traditional ideals, that condemn easy money and emphasize the value of hard work, in contrast to the neoliberal realities of capitalistic modes of accumulation that encourages speculation over production.
