Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand the impacts of Covid-19 on the progression of digitalization of banks in an emerging market. For this purpose, business model canvas (BMC) is used as a theoretical framework to explore these effects on each business elements of Turkish Banks’ business strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

Data are collected through structured interviews with the top managers of seven diversified banks. Interview questions are designed based on BMC.

Findings

The results show that the onset of the Covid-19 is a shock that has made digitalization a strategic issue that necessitates an urgent change in many business elements of banks such as customer relationships, communication channels, resource allocation, partnerships and financing. Further, it has stimulated redefining value proposition and collaboration/interaction among all financial institutions through digital platforms.

Practical implications

BMC can be used to explain decision-making and business processes of banks for exploring the effect of recent and/or unexpected developments in the business environment of an emerging economy. The results provide insights and recommendations to managers of financial institutions into the impacts of Covid-19 on banks’ operational and strategic processes. That allows financial institutions, including Fintechs, to use this information for taking precautions and proactive actions against shocks.

Originality/value

This study is an initial attempt to explore the impacts of the Covid-19 on banks in an emerging economy by using BMC. With that, this study contributes to the literature by explaining the effect of progression of digitalization in banking from a strategic business model perspective using a qualitative research method.

Abstract

Along with accounting scandals in the past, academics, researchers, and legislators have focused on fraud. The purpose of this study is to examine postgraduate and doctoral studies, articles, and books about forensic accounting and fraud audit published between the years 2008 and 2018 in Turkey. For this purpose, a total of 96 studies have been examined and 35 of these are master’s theses, 10 of them are PhD theses, 45 of them are articles, and six of them are books. These studies were presented in tables as classified. The studies examined in our research are summarized as year they were published, the author, and the scope of the topic and in terms of results. The conclusions of this study can be summarized as follows: (a) the majority of thesis published about forensic accounting and fraud audit are in 2011 and following years. In addition, most of the theses are focused on forensic accounting review rather than fraud audit. (b) Results in the articles reviewed are in the same direction with theses. (c) There are very few books about fraud audit and forensic accounting. One of them is related to fraud audit, while the rest of them are related to forensic accounting and forensic accounting profession. We suggest extending the scope of the study and making to other countries.

Abstract

The kinds of decisions people make or how they react to certain situations could differ according to the society, atmosphere or environment those people come from. Studies about the influence of human behaviors on economics, business and actions were initiated by analyzing human behaviors and those studies carry on into behavioral finance and behavioral accounting.

In previous years, the models used were based on the assumption that people behave rationally while making decisions. These models lost validity recently and behavioral accounting started to search for the influences affecting human behaviors. They started considering not only the people who prepare accounting data but also the people who take advantage of this data. People’s environment, cultural differences, psychological and sociological factors have entered into the accounting’s field of interest as factors that have an influence on behavior.

The aim of this study is to try to analyze the theoretical bases and extent of behavioral accounting, which focuses on the human behavior factors being observed while creating or using financial reports. The authors also aim to contribute to the literature by including the neuroaccounting dimension into the analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of some real variables such as real effective exchange rates, real mortgage rates, real money supply, real construction cost index and housing sales on the real housing prices.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model in the monthly period of 2010:1–2021:10.

Findings

The real effective exchange rate has a positive and symmetric effect. The decreasing effect of negative changes in real money supply on real housing prices is higher than the increasing effect of positive changes. Only positive changes in the real construction cost index have an increasing and statistically significant effect on real house prices, while only negative changes in housing sales have a small negative sign and a small increasing effect on housing prices. The fact that the positive and negative changes in real mortgage rates are negative and positive, respectively, indicates that both have a reducing effect on real housing prices.

Originality/value

This study suggests the first NARDL model that investigates the asymmetric effects on real housing prices instead of nominal housing prices for Turkey. In addition, the study is the first, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, to examine the effects of the five real variables on real housing prices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present numerical solutions for the space‐ and time‐fractional Korteweg‐de Vries (KdV) equation using homotopy analysis method (HAM). The space and time‐fractional derivatives are described in the Caputo sense. The paper witnesses the extension of HAM for fractional KdV equations.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents numerical solutions for the space‐ and time‐fractional KdV equation using HAM. The space and time‐fractional derivatives are described in the Caputo sense.

Findings

In this paper, the application of homotopy analysis method was extended to obtain explicit and numerical solutions of the time‐ and space‐fractional KdV equation with initial conditions. The homotopy analysis method was clearly a very efficient and powerful technique in finding the solutions of the proposed equations.

Originality/value

In this paper, the application of HAM was extended to obtain explicit and numerical solutions of the time‐ and space‐fractional KdV equation with initial conditions. The HAM was clearly very efficient and powerful technique in finding the solutions of the proposed equations. The obtained results demonstrate the reliability of the algorithm and its wider applicability to fractional nonlinear evolution equations. Finally, the recent appearance of nonlinear fractional differential equations as models in some fields such as the thermal diffusion in fractal media makes it necessary to investigate the method of solutions for such equations and the authors hope that this paper is a step in this direction.

Abstract

Purpose

What are the causes and consequences of Turkey’s intervention in Syria? The purpose of this paper is to explore this question by focusing on the time frame from 2011 to 2016, i.e. prior to Turkey’s strategic U-turn from uncompromising enmity toward Russia and Iran.

Design/methodology/approach

Process tracing is used as the main methodological guideline.

Findings

Turkey’s intervention in Syria has been driven by a mutually reinforcing interaction of geopolitical, geo-economic and geo-cultural factors. Turkey’s neo-Ottomanist geo-strategy has been militarized in the context of the Arab Spring, perceived decline of US hegemony, increasing Kurdish autonomy and Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi’s (AKP) electoral setbacks. Second, Turkey’s intervention has been triggered by the converging motivations for energy security, easily gained profits from the black energy market and economic integration with Arab-Gulf countries in the face of a stagnating Western capitalism. A third set of factors speaks to the AKP’s instrumental use of Sunni sectarianism and Kurdish ethnopolitics.

Originality/value

The research aim is to provide a systematic and multi-causal explanation of Turkey’s involvement in Syria.
