Abstract
Purpose
The monetary policy is an important driver of the real estate sector’s performance. The recent wave of monetary tightening in 2022 in response to the cost-of-living crisis has been associated with the decline in housing prices across the globe. There are two main channels through which the US monetary policy may affect the real estate market in the dollar-pegged countries: the cost of serving mortgages (financing cost) and the exchange rate channel (for example, the appreciation of the US dollar and consequently the local currency). The exchange rate channel, which involves the appreciation of the US dollar and the subsequent effect on the local currency, is particularly significant in the case of Dubai, given how international the housing market in Dubai and might be viewed as a tradable good. Using recent data, the purpose of this study to evaluate the spillover impact of the US monetary policy on the housing market performance in the dollar-pegged countries using Dubai as a case study.
Design/methodology/approach
For this purpose, this study collected unique longitudinal data on the volume of the monthly transactions of residential properties and performs a panel-data analysis using within-variation models. The changes in the interest rate policy in the USA are determined by the domestic inflation in the USA, thereby, representing an exogenous shock in the UAE.
Findings
The results are robust to different specifications and suggest that a strong negative correlation between the interest rate in the USA and the housing sector demand in Dubai. Fiscal policy measures can be taken to mitigate tighter financial conditions in case of policy misalignment.
Originality/value
Few studies have looked at the spillover impact of the global monetary conditions on the real estate market in the GCC region. This study fills this gap by exploring the impact of the US financial conditions on Dubai’s real estate, using panel data analysis.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to analyze whether precarious employment is associated with youth mental health, self-rated health and happiness in marriage and whether this association differs by sex.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper uses longitudinal data from the Survey of Young People in Egypt conducted in 2009 and 2014 and estimates a fixed-effects model to control for time-invariant unobserved individual heterogeneity. The analysis is segregated by sex.
Findings
The results indicate that precarious employment is significantly associated with poor mental health and less happiness in marriage for males and is positively associated with poor self-reported health for females. The adverse impact of precarious work is likely to be mediated through poor working conditions such as low salary, maltreatment at work, job insecurity and harassment from colleagues.
Social implications
Governmental policies that tackle job precariousness are expected to improve population health and marital welfare.
Originality/value
Egypt has witnessed a significant increase in the prevalence of precarious employment, particularly among youth, in recent decades, yet the evidence on its effect on the health and well-being of youth workers is sparse. This paper adds to the extant literature by providing new evidence on the social and health repercussions of job precariousness from an understudied region.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to apply an incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ISPH) method to simulate the Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) free convection flow of a nanofluid in a porous cavity containing rotating hexagonal and two circular cylinders under the impacts of Soret and Dufour numbers.
Design/methodology/approach
The inner shapes are rotating around a cavity center by a uniform circular motion at angular rate
Findings
The results indicated that the uniform motions of inner shapes are changing the characteristics of the fluid flow, temperature and concentration inside a cavity. An augmentation on a Hartman parameter slows down the flow speed and an inclination angle of a magnetic field raises the flow speed. A rise in the Soret number accompanied by a reduction in the Dufour number lead to a growth in the concentration distribution in a cavity.
Originality/value
ISPH method is used to simulate the double-diffusive convection of novel rotating shapes in a porous cavity. The inner novel shapes are rotating hexagonal and two circular cylinders.
