Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on human resource management (HRM) within Saudi Arabia's distinct socio-legal landscape, which is shaped by Islamic cultural norms, stringent labor laws and a diversifying economy. This context necessitates innovative HR strategies during crises.
Design/methodology/approach
Grounded in the resource-based view, this qualitative study employs semi-structured interviews with 18 HR professionals across various sectors. This approach enables an in-depth exploration of HRM practice adaptations during the pandemic, using purposive sampling to ensure the collection of rich and relevant data.
Findings
Significant shifts towards remote work, the digitalization of HR operations and prioritizing employee health and safety were identified. The analysis revealed key themes, including HR policy changes, resilience strategies, encountered challenges, the importance of communication in employee engagement and strategic learnings. These findings highlight the criticality of adaptability, clear communication and digital transformation in effective crisis management.
Originality/value
This research contributes novel insights into the resilience of HRM practices in Saudi Arabia’s unique socio-legal environment during health crises. It fills a gap in our understanding of how specific regional contexts influence HRM strategies during emergencies, offering valuable contributions to both theory and practice. The study provides practical guidance for HR professionals and policymakers on crafting effective HRM strategies tailored to organizational needs in crisis conditions, thereby enhancing the field’s knowledge on navigating HRM challenges in future health crises.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to analyze the evolution and current state of talent management in learning organizations and the design of managerial curricula, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in the context of a rapidly changing global business environment.
Design/methodology/approach
A narrative literature review was conducted, tracing the conceptual evolution of learning organizations. Seminal works emphasizing continuous learning and transformation were highlighted, and the progression of managerial education was analyzed, from its early focus on ethics and soft skills to its current emphasis on sustainability, digital literacy and experiential learning.
Findings
The research reveals challenges in balancing foundational knowledge with emerging competencies in curriculum design. Tensions are evident in maintaining relevance in rapidly changing, globally interconnected environments. Notable limitations include the trade-offs in innovation and the need to cater to diverse student demographics.
Originality/value
This review uniquely synthesizes developments at the intersection of curriculum innovation, organizational learning and curriculum design, offering valuable insights for institutions aiming to nurture talent for modern learning organizations.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aimed to examine the antecedents, correlates, and consequences of burnout among higher education faculty in Saudi Arabia using the theoretical framework of the job demands-resources model.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a quantitative research design, a cross-sectional survey was employed to collect data from faculty members across multiple Saudi universities. The constructs were measured using validated scales, and data analysis included exploratory factor analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, factorial ANOVA, and multiple regression.
Findings
The study identified moderate levels of burnout, confirming a significant positive relationship with role conflict and a negative relationship with internal locus of control. Burnout significantly contributed to depression, insomnia, and turnover intentions. However, no significant relationship was found between burnout and workplace conflict when controlling for other variables.
Research limitations/implications
The study's findings can inform policymakers and academic administrators about measures to alleviate faculty burnout, thus contributing to healthier academic work environments aligned with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 goals.
Originality/value
This research extends the job demands-resources model within the context of higher education institutions in Saudi Arabia, offering nuanced insights into burnout dynamics among university faculty in this region. Despite the model's robustness, the absence of a significant relationship between burnout and workplace conflict signals the need for a more intricate understanding of burnout's antecedents and consequences.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the direct relationship between green human resource management (GHRM) practices and environmental performance (EP) in Palestinian universities, as well as the mediating role of management support (MS) and green organisational culture (GOC) in this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
A quantitative approach was used in this study. The data were collected from 351 employees working in Palestinian universities through a questionnaire and analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling.
Findings
The study finds that the implementation of GHRM practices positively enhances EP. The results further demonstrate that GHRM practices influence both MS and GOC. Furthermore, this study reveals that both MS and GOC play a significant role in mediating the relationship between GHRM and EP.
Practical implications
This study adds to the existing literature by providing a conceptual framework and empirical evidence of the correlation between GHRM, GOC, MS and EP, specifically in university settings. Educational institutions can use this study’s findings to foster a green culture and gain endorsement from top-level management. This approach promotes the adoption of eco-friendly practices and the development of environmental strategies that can influence EP.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the field by enhancing the understanding of the ability–motivation–opportunity theory in the context of Palestinian universities. Specifically, this study investigates how GHRM practices and GOC establish core competence for sustainable EP. Furthermore, the findings reveal a positive influence of GHRM practices on both GOC and MS. Finally, this study’s empirical evidence highlights the significance of GHRM practices in fostering GOC, MS and, ultimately, improving EP within universities.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aimed to examine the role of green human resource management on environmental performance at Islamic universities, with the mediating effect of green cultural festivals and the moderating role of individual green values.
Design/methodology/approach
The research employed random sampling techniques by selecting a sample of 192 students from various Islamic universities in Indonesia. The participants were selected through an online survey. In addition, data analysis was done using the structural equation modelling-partial least squares (SEM-PLS) technique with the SmartPLS 3.0.
Findings
Implementing green human resource management has become a crucial factor in enhancing the environmental performance of Islamic universities. Moreover, green cultural festivals function as an intermediary variable. At the same time, individual green values exhibit a moderating variable that can enhance the influence between green human resource management and environmental performance.
Practical implications
Implementing an effective green human resource management strategy enhances environmental performance. Green human resource management has assisted universities in creating a generation of graduates with a solid commitment to ecological sustainability and raised awareness of the significance of conserving the environment. As a result, this commitment equips students to become agents of change in society upon graduation. Furthermore, campuses need to integrate environmental curriculum components into all study programs, as students need to understand the significant impact of environmental stewardship from both Islamic and scientific perspectives.
Originality/value
This research provides a novel perspective on how Islamic universities are exceptionally well-equipped to create environmental awareness and values that students can practically apply post-graduation using green cultural festivals, which are regularly held. This study is the first to introduce the concept of green cultural festivals in universities utilising the basis of combining green culture with cultural festivals with the theoretical background of resource-based theory.

Abstract
Purpose
Having argued in the part I paper that the interest‐based fiat monetary system is not compatible with the objectives of the Islamic law or the Shariah, this paper seeks to argue why commodity moneys, like the gold dinar and silver dirham, are compatible with the maqasid.
Design/methodology/approach
This is a theoretical paper that integrates information from the Qur’an, the traditions of the Prophet, the writings of early Islamic scholars and historical observations vis‐à‐vis the objectives or the maqasid al‐Shariah and makes logical deductions therefrom.
Findings
The theoretical conclusion is that while fiat money is counterproductive to the maqasid al‐Shariah, commodity moneys like the gold dinar and silver dirham, are indeed compatible with the maqasid. The Islamic economic system is, therefore, fundamentally a “barter” system, i.e. an exchange economy where goods and services are exchanged value for value, but avoids the problems associated with barter by taking some of the commodities exchanged in the economy, that have the characteristics of money, as money. Gold is argued to be the best Shari’ah money.
Research limitations/implications
Empirical investigations may shed further light.
Practical implications
If the theoretical deductions and contentions of the paper are correct, then their practical implications cannot simply be understated. For the Islamic economic system to emerge in reality, or for that matter any process of Islamization of knowledge/disciplines to succeed, it is foremost crucial that commodity moneys gradually replace fiat money.
Originality/value
The paper establishes that commodity moneys like gold and silver are Shariah‐compatible moneys, whereas the current fiat money is not.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the effects of taqwa (God-consciousness) and syukr (gratitude to God) on emotional intelligence (EI) in a Muslim population in Malaysia.
Design/methodology/approach
Structural equation modelling tool AMOS was used to test the study’s hypotheses. In total, data were sourced from 302 Muslim employees working in Malaysia's public and private sectors.
Findings
Taqwa and syukr positively influence EI, and people with taqwa and syukr demonstrate greater levels of self-emotional appraisal compared with other emotional appraisals. This study also shows that people with taqwa and syukr give increased priority to understanding and distinguishing positive and negative emotions because of their understanding of Islamic teachings. They also exhibit concern with knowing their emotions well before advising or responding to the emotions of others. This may increase their sense of empathy, thereby improving their emotional competency and EI.
Originality/value
The findings indicate that taqwa and syukr predispose Muslims to EI. This study applied the Qur’anic model of self-development, which connects the origin of emotion with the soul, thereby further enriching the literature on the subject. It also highlights the importance of taqwa and syukr to Muslim employees for achieving EI that is useful in creating a harmonious atmosphere in the workplace and prosperous relationships in society.

Purpose
This paper aims to examine the barriers to adopting collaboration in architectural design studios from the instructors' perspectives and explore strategies to overcome barriers.
Design/methodology/approach
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 coordinators in architecture and interior architecture design studios to gather insights into their experiences and perspectives on collaboration. Thematic analysis was employed to identify key themes and patterns in the data.
Findings
The study reveals that collaboration is highly valued by instructors for its potential to enhance creativity, problem-solving abilities, and preparation skills among students. However, the study identified several barriers, such as student conflicts, coordination challenges, cultural differences, and technological constraints.
Practical implications
The instructors recommended specific strategies to promote collaboration in architectural design studios. These strategies include involving students in collaborative projects, providing training in collaboration skills, striking a balance between online and in-person activities, and developing supportive policies and skills. Implementing these strategies can help design programmemes that prepare students for professional success and future careers.
Originality/value
This study sheds light on the importance of integrating collaboration skills in architectural education. By exploring barriers and suggesting strategies, it provides valuable insights for educators and encourages further research into the implementation of these strategies. Design programmes can benefit from adopting a multifaceted approach to foster collaboration among students, thereby enhancing their learning experience and future prospects.
