Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to find out the uses of ChatGPT for research work and the demerits as well. The application of ChatGTP for aiding scholarly writing was also explored.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses literature search from Blogs, Wikis and the internet to find out the trends in libraries using ChatGTP. The literature search and review are presented thematically.

Findings

It was found that just as ChatGPT has positive uses, the demerits may outweigh because it does not check sources of the information. Its advantage as a preparatory writing tool is recognized by libraries and librarians.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this review may be one of the few currently on the trends in ChatGPT from blogs, wikis and the cybersphere.

Abstract

Purpose

This last edition of the column begins with the disadvantages of sleeping in the library and ends with 60-year-old overdue loans, but in between are alternate ways of using different technology to access information!

Design/methodology/approach

Sleeping in the library is trending on the internet, not because it is a nice pastime, but because it is one of the most viral trends of the year.

Findings

The real advice is that falling asleep in public places such as libraries is not good. A lot of wild reactions to the picture of a girl sleeping in a university library has caused all sorts, as “photo-shoppers”have had a field day, putting the sleeper in all sorts of situations – in Drake’s “Hotline Bling” music video, dancing with Michael Jackson and more.

Social implications

Derrick Lewis on 26th August reported that an Orange County library had made wi-fi devices available for rural internet users.

Originality/value

It is helping rural families make faster connections, and it is free to try the device which can be borrowed for 3 weeks and renewed twice if no one else has booked to use it.

Abstract

Purpose

Blockchain technology as a way of preventing data tampering of institutions databases is creating new opportunities for libraries. Digital ledgers can help better track intellectual property rights and ownership for art, commodities, music, film and more. The blockchain technology is used in libraries, archives and museums for data management, in academic publishing and others.

Design/methodology/approach

Using systematic literature review, and exploring blogs and wikis, data is collected of ways in which blockchain has been used and can be used in the memory institutions.

Findings

Blockchain is used by some institutions for collection management, offering native protection against data tampering, for decentralized digital identity solutions, and in academic publishing, and also could be used in museums as a means of asserting ownership over an original digital work. Recommendations are made for more specialized use as technology advances.

Originality/value

Novel ways of using blockchain apart from those used in the financial industry are brought to the fore for libraries, archives and museums. Librarians, archivists and museum curators find links to ways of using blockchain for their work.

Abstract

Purpose

This edition of the column aims to expand the ideas presented in a poster of the same title exhibited at the IASSIST Conference held in April 2017 in Kansas, USA.

Design/methodology/approach

It explores the fact that data are constantly being generated daily; however, the use of these data is limited because of its unavailability to the general public in forms or formats they need.

Findings

Data are important to research because of their high information value, that is, value-added information that is critical for decision-making.

Originality/value

Data come in many forms — census, statistics, research results, figures, graphs, interview transcriptions, journal entries, etc.
